I do miss this sound. 1975 International COE Transtar 2 with the Silver 8V92. I made a lot of long nose conventionals with 400 Cats and Cummins mad at me when I'd pass them😆 with the straight pipes!
@slimchancetoo
@slimchancetoo 4 жыл бұрын
Yep -- see my comment above. Backing off was the better choice than trying to out-pull you. But without getting into an argument with you I doubt a factory spec Silver 92 (I drove several at high gross rates and sometimes multiple trailers) could take on a Cat 400 or even a Cummins 400 for pulling power. I built (had built for me actually) a single drive Co4070 pulling volume freight -- now that was unbeatable in the hill climbing stakes with its 15 speed direct and later 9 speed overdrive. Not fast with the 15 but jet propelled with the factory 9 o/d. Where o/d stands for overdrive NOT overdosed.

@tomromanski7925
@tomromanski7925 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Chris, this truck hauls 80 to 90k loads every day. All local stuff, within 100 mile radius. This truck was built for the highway, has 3.70 gears with 13 speed overdrive trans. Will do 65 70 with a load no problem on flat ground. Good avg speed is 60. I get about 5 mpg, which isn't bad for a 40 year old truck, but that's also local driving. Haven't really had a long run to see highway mileage. If you're looking to buy one to use every day, they are very reliable, not much to go wrong. But if there is a problem, you better know someone who can work on them if not yourself, because it's real hard to find a good mechanic who still knows how to work on a 2 stroke detroit. And there are still plenty of parts available if you need them too.. But there sure is nothing better than that sound. Good luck!

I run the truck locally, so driving through neighborhoods with straight pipes would probably make a lot of people angry. I actually did that once. Slammed on the brake real hard at low speed to avoid something and the engine stalled and restarted itself. Let out the clutch in first gear and I went backwards. Put it in reverse and went forward. Freaked me out, so I shut it off, restarted it and everything was normal again. What a crazy feeling, I sure thought I broke something!

I shift at 21 2200. 53 series are high revvers, no need to do that on a 92 series. May sound cool for a bit, but useless otherwise.

Do you run this in revenue service regularly or just once in a while?

Works almost every day in the summer months, don't use it when the weather gets bad. Also don't keep the straight pipes on during regular service

@@tomromanski7925 oh ok. Tha I you fornthe reply. The reason I asked is because I'm looking at a GMC General that has the same engine and I want run it in service, but my concern is parts availability and people who know how to work on them. I'm mechanically inclined so I mean I could buy a service manual and learn. I guess I just wanna know, how reliable are these babies? Because I really wanna run one.

@@88BroughamLS, these engines are very reliable, if maintained correctly and proper oil is used. Parts are still available from detroit diesel, and aftermarket as well, although they might have to be ordered. It is hard to find mechanics that still work on these engines, but they are out there, mostly in marine service, where these engines are still used in many large boats. Only downfall is they all eventually have a few small oil leaks that you learn to live with. If you have any mechanical background, they are easy to keep tuned, you just need some special tools, and manuals are available online. If you have the chance to buy one I wouldn't hesitate, just enjoy it!

They are 5 inch pipes with regular turnouts. Right now I'm running mufflers working it every day.
