Pacific Southwest Airlines Flight 182 was a Boeing 727 commercial airliner, that collided with a private Cessna 172 over San Diego, California on September 25, 1978. It was Pacific Southwest Airlines' first accident involving fatalities. The death toll of 144 makes it the deadliest aircraft disaster in California history.
Both aircraft crashed into North Park, a San Diego neighborhood, killing all 135 on board the Boeing 727, the two men aboard the Cessna 172 Skyhawk, and seven people on the ground in houses, including two children. Nine others on the ground were injured and 22 homes were destroyed or damaged by the impact and the spreading of debris.
The PSA 182 accident caused the revision of air traffic rules applicable to the busiest airports across the U.S., with the intention of improving separation of aircraft operating in the vicinity of large airports.

I attended Franklin Elementary School in San Diego and the window I sat next to faced West. I would daydream out the window often and that day I saw the plane on fire coming down. I will never forget that day as long as I live. I was just 9 years old. Very sad.

My dad was scheduled to be on that flight and due to being overbooked, they asked him if he would mind waiting for the next flight a few hours later. he was ok with that and waited. when he got to San Diego people kept asking if he was a reporter as he always carried cameras. discovered that his original flight had crashed. gives you a different view on things. maybe it's a good thing to be patient. if he had insisted on going on that flight he would be dead.

I was on my way to take my daughter to Balboa for an appointment. Guy next to me on the highway honked and pointed up. We both watched in horror as the plane fell and crashed. My sister lived about a half mile from the crash site. When I got to Balboa they said they were getting ready for survivors. Unfortunately I had to tell them I doubted there would be any. I was in the AF and a medic and had seen several military accidents and knew. I refused to fly for almost 5 years after seeing it crash. Sad day for San Diego.

I remember this day like it was yesterday. I was 10 years old and in Elementary school in San Diego. It was unusually hot that day. RIP to all. Some of the first responders spoke of their experiences that day and some of the things they saw were truly horrifying. Torsos in trees and slammed into car doors, there was an alley will just amputated feet in it, body parts everywhere. Most of them said they will never truly recover mentally from the horrors of that day.

It was a Monday. I was 11 yrs old and home sick from school. I was sorting baseball cards I had just bought over the weekend at my kitchen table with a large window to my right. I heard a BAM!, followed by the window rattling for a few seconds. I didn't think much of it until later that AM when my mom's boyfriend came home from his graveyard work shift and immediately turned on the TV. It occurred to me: We lived in the flight path of Lindbergh. The PSA plane and the Cessna collided somewhere over my neighborhood. Scary even now to remember that.

I was a sailor stationed on board a ship at 32nd street Naval Base and I was out on top of the Bridge looking through the Signalman's lookout scope when I witnessed the crash occur. I couldn't believe my eyes, it was very frightening. I think I recall that the Cessna came very close to the Naval Base before it collided with the PSA. I think I tried to tell a few others about it but as I recall no one would believe me. So sorry for all the loss of life and wish that I could have done more to help but I did stop long enough to pray for them.

Same for me. I was at school and saw it out the window. I told the boy ahead of me in class I saw a plane on fire in the sky. He became annoyed and told me to shut up. Fifteen minutes later someone came in our class and said school was dismissed due to a plane crash. He looked at me in shock, and I shrugged and said, "Told you." It was a very shocking thing to see, as I couldn't articulate it when it was happening. I remained silent in disbelief at what I was seeing. I'll never forget it. Awful day.

I was there..PSA was best Job I ever had. 3 days up at the crash site worse 3 days of my life. I worked gate 11 (A&B) that day we parked 766, 182 never arrived. Up at crash site we pulled C172 wing of rectory churches roof got covered in avgas taking it down , days later, guy was telling me about wing he took down off of roof did not even remember it was me with him. I think shock does funny things to memory. Big gaps in mine up there. Been 40 years yesterday never talked about it before. Around 40 people that came through the San Diego station that were on that flight who worked for PSA just did not come to work anymore. Very sad for all lives lost RIP to all lost and affected by this tragedy. Cant believe how hard it was to write this.

I live just two blocks from Dwight and Nile, I just walked there the other day to see where it happened. I talked to a few people who live in the same houses they did when it happened, they said they still find small parts of the plane still. There is a memorial etched into the sidewalk, it is faded now, and every year on Sept 25th at Saint Luke's Church they have a memorial service and to go the site of the wreck.

+Larry Barrios I would not doubt it at all, I'll have to look that one up , Flight 191. I thought about getting some of my paranormal group together and going to Dwight and Nile with recorders to see if can get any EVPS and such. I did talk to someone yesterday, I went over to the site yesterday and was just standing there paying my respects and laying down flowers, an older gentleman came up to me and asked what I was doing, I told him, he stated "Yes that was a horrible day, my wife and I remember it well, all those body parts and the damage done, the heat from the fire and the smoke, we couldn't get back into our house for a year or so with all the clean up and repair. " I asked him about did he or anyone he know experience any hauntings, He told me about seeing shadowy figures walking around, voices that can't be explained, and someone screaming, I said could it be live people, he told me no,he firmly believes that it's the spirits of those that died in crash.

i was standing on el cajon boulevard, in san diego, heard the boom, looked up, and saw the PSA aircraft, half engulfed in flame, falling straight down. it fell like a rock. the cessna was sent careening across the horizon, and went in to a tail spin as it plummeted. the cessna, reminded me of a ping pong ball that had been swatted by a large ping pong paddle. i was a couple blocks away from the psa aircraft impact. everything was on fire. it was an unholy mess. so many people convverged on the crash scene....emergency vehicles had a hard time entering the area. there was nothing i could do, so after several minutes, i left.

It was south of El Cajon Boulevard. Very close to the 8:05 freeway. As I recall, the streets running parallel to El Cajon Boulevard were named after American presidents. I can tell you, that area is Forever blighted by the tragedy. Years later one could still feel, in the air, the sense of Gloom that hung over that area. I just Googled it landed at Polk and 32nd. Other debris came down at Dwight and Nile

The 7:27 hit the ground about 30 feet North of the intersection of Dwight and Nile Street at a speed of 300 miles per hour. Because of its angle of impact the fuselage of the jet landed in a 12 foot by 6 foot Impact Zone and the resulting compression forces expelled mutilated people luggage and cabin contents out its left side at a high rate of speed. Virtually everything on and in the plane was blown to pieces. Collateral damage like housefires down power lines pools of jet fuel and crowds of onlookers were expertly managed by police and fire Crews. They deserve much of the credit for the fact that the crashes aftermath was safely managed.

I was 18 at the time. My friend was driving down hwy 94 west and saw the plane coming down. He raced to my house in the college area and told me what had happened. We climbed out on the roof of our house and sure enough you could just see the black smoke coming up. We got in the car and were in the North Park area about 15 minutes after the crash. The small plane crashed about a mile and a half away. One of the engines from the PSA plane just missed an apartment complex not far from where the small plane had crashed...

The things I've read about this crash are especially saddening...first of all, it didn't crash the way as shown in this video (from Mayday Air Craft Investigation). It hit near the intersection of Dwight and Nile at about a 45 degree angle, pitched to the right, which is the worst way to crash as far as carnage is concerned. The way the plane impacted caused pretty much everyone to be ejected out of the left side, in pieces, all over the neighborhood. One passenger was blown out of the airliner alive, flew 200 yards down the street, and four witnesses stated that they heard him screaming as he flew past them before impacting a car. Even if that only took a couple seconds, what an extra sickening way to die. As safe as flying is, it still scares me because of tragedies like this.

+David Gee Yes and the wall is still there where a few people hit it, It is painted a beige color now. I drive by that spot and the intersection every day on my way home., the pictures of the neighborhood or just horrible, but today looking at the area you would have never know something happened like that. As I stated in an earlier post I did talk to some people who still live in the area that was around when this happened they find small bits of the plane to this day and have had paranormal experiences, the planes fly very low over this area.

I think the person mentioned tried to jump out of the plane along with one or two other people, one of whom was a male flight attendant. This was observed by witnesses. I imagine they did this by lowering the back staircase, something possible on a 727. This is how D.B. Cooper parachuted out of the plane he hijacked.
@DavidGee51

Carol Hutchinson Carol, first of all the time between the impact of the two planes and the 727's impact with the ground was about 17 seconds. Secondly, that is about the dumbest thing I've ever read.

David: You wrote " One passenger was blown out of the airliner alive, flew 200 yards down the street, and four witnesses stated that they heard him screaming as he flew past them before impacting a car." Sorry, but that is not only a lie, it is ridiculous and absurd. Also, it's completely impossible, according to every law of physics. Here is why: the PSA plane---and everyone and everything inside it---impacted the ground at over 300mph. Yep, that is 300, as in THREE hundred. And, it didn't come in flat. It wasn't a belly landing, or a controlled crash. The plane came in almost vertical. Meaning, every single thing on that plane went from 300mph, to 0, in a split second. The g-forces and impact are not survivable. No living thing can survive a crash at that speed. The kinetic force is extraordinary. It is known as an "unsurvivable" event. Not only was every single person on that plane instantly killed, but not a single intact body was found. Not even one. Every single body was torn into multiple pieces. There have been some shots, over the years, leaked to the press, of body parts in the street.

I just happen to look up saw the impact the small aircraft it looked like it disintegrated. I saw the wing burst into flames and I saw her pitch over and go down. The pictures on the net are similar to what I saw but from another angle. Flew out the next day I still remember the newspaper pictures vividly and so we are closing on 36 years. I witnessed this accident from my school and it has always bothered me about the graphics. The PSA jet NEVER made a left turn as shown. It was a right turn from Mission Valley onto it's base over North Park where the collision happened. PSA was NOT suppose to be in that area, as it's a short cut to the airport. They were suppose to go down wind to El Cajon, u-turn to the right and line up for final. My cousin was on board as the head stewardess and her husband was a captain for PSA. He was NOT on the plane, but I knew my cousin who died that day along with a another person on the ground who was on the phone when the plane took out her house. Very sad day for San Diego.

The PSA, which flew south from L.A. to San Diego, made a left turn onto its downwind leg heading east. The collision occurred as it initiated a right turn onto its crosswind leg heading south again, before it would have made another right turn onto its final approach heading west.

I went jogging one evening and stopped at Dwight and Nile because my cousin called me on my cell. As I talked to her, I was looking down and saw deep gouges in the sidewalk, all going the same direction, away from the point of impact. Its a powerful place to be, lots of thoughts racing through my head. So many people died in an instant on that exact spot.

I was in 9th grade at Christian High School in El Cajon that fateful morning. I saw the huge black plum of smoke 20 miles west in San Diego and convinced our history teacher to turn on the TV to see what large explosion or what not had happened. The entire class watched in fascinated horror as the TV news crews unfolded what little they knew about this tragic crash. It was clear many lives were lost. Our teacher Greg Webster had us all pray in turn for the many victims in San Diego that day! Turns out the plane crashed just 1 mile from my fathers townhome & very near Adams Ave Elementary where my Mom taught. A sad day for San Diego. The only upside is that ATC procedures have been vastly improved due to crashes like this & Cerritos Aeromexico flight, among several others, and that now such occurance are growing much rarer. When I was growing up in the early 70's, each summer when travel season was high, it seemed like several major air crashes where all lives were lost were expected - now they are comparatively rare. Now everytime I fly I am reminded how blessed we are and give thanks to God & remember those whose lives were lost in the process of advancing safety for us, their unknowing beneficiaries !

If you google search this flight you will likely come across the discussion about this topic. I read it about a year ago. I am not saying anything posted on a thread is accurate but it is interesting to read. I also read about one passenger was thrown from the impact and was alive and screaming while being propelled down the street. Multiple people claimed to have seen this. Just search the web.

yes sir theres no doubt about that ! I was about 14 at this time & I recall the visceral horror of the whole tragedy - very strong having been living there nearby and it played a part in my becoming a Christian, of getting serious about giving my life to Christ ! I just couldn't get it out of my mind & heart about how quick life can end, and there you are face to face with God having had little or no warning. So, God used this tragedy in my life in a positive way and I know in the lives of others near to me. We had a house only a mile away & if just a couple of things were just a tiny bit different, it could well have been our home PSA 182 fell on. So, I pray that all others realize the brevity of life & God's grace that we should respond in Trust & Love - in that case, even a tragedy such as this will be but a graduation to Gods Great reality and not just a dark ending.

I will never forget this day! I was 5 years old in my kindergarten class at Adams Elementary School. The whole school shook! Teacher was all... "that is probably is a plane landing". I kid you not, that is what she said! All of us San Diegans know that can not be true from this location to where the airport is. But in some regards, she was correct! Then... having to drive passed it to get home, think my parents wanted to check it out. OMG THE DISASTER! I will not EVER forget everything I saw in that crash. Also, for at least a decade after, people still dug up bones from the crash in their backyards. It would be on the news.

The compression and G-forces resulting from the approximately 350 knots (400 mph; 650 km/h) impact speed resulted in a scene of incredible carnage as the passengers and crew were mutilated and dismembered. According to an NTSB investigator, "[The NTSB] estimated that that the 727 was going a little under 400 miles per hour (350 kn; 640 km/h) when it impacted that garage floor. This created a pressure wave that traveled back through the passenger cabin ripping open the top right side of the passenger cabin like it was a bag of chips and then expelling everything out of that passenger cabin through the rip at over 200 miles per hour (170 kn; 320 km/h). This had an effect like a paper shredder. Of all the people that were aboard this flight only four bodies were recovered completely intact. Solace can be taken in the fact that it is very highly unlikely that anyone in the passenger cabin survived the initial pressure wave when it hit them. Their death while a horrible thought was very very quick and everyone was already dead before their bodies were ejected from the plane and dismembered. The reports of body parts in trees and bushes are correct and were not exaggerated. Veteran news reporters that had thought they had seen it all in their careers could be seen throwing up in the gutters along with some police officers. An aircraft crash site is never pretty and is something you won't soon forget if you have the unfortunate luck of witnessing one but this one goes down as probably the worst of the worst. The NTSB ended up having to send their investigators of this crash to psychiatrists after they concluded their investigation and I had read that the S.D. police and fire departments offered the same thing to their personnel that responded to this crash site." The only intact bodies belonged to two flight attendants, First Officer Fox, and one passenger. Captain McFerron's remains were never identified.[1]:8

The NTSB investigation could not determine that. Regardless, the damaged flaps and slats on the right wing resulted in loss of the required aerodynamics and the plane was uncontrollable. I visited the site about a month after the accident, and it looked as if a bomb had destroyed the whole block.

I know someone who witnessed this crash. The 727 DID overtake the cessna, striking the jet's nosewheel that had just been lowered. the remains of the cessna then cartwheeled back and struck the inboard section of the jet's right wing, and some smaller pieces were ingested into the jet's engines. The cessna was on an IFR training flight, and the pilot had been instructed to fly a heading of 070 - instead, for reasons unknown, he was flying 090 which put him in line with the jet's heading. The PSA crew did nothing wrong. The rest is history. Terrible & tragic crash.

mattyk19751 This may be true. However, CVR transcripts show the flight crew was actively searching for the Cessna up until the moment of impact. Some reports have faulted them for not sighting the smaller plane. I don't buy it. For one thing, the Cessna was in their blind spot - directly underneath the nose - and I can tell you from experience that spotting a Cessna 172 against a metropolitan landscape is difficult. The white paint on top the Cessna's wings blends in with the features below making it nearly impossible to see at times. This is especially true under hazy sky conditions so common along the CA coast.

Firstly, it's not a "private plane". A private plane is like a Gulfstream of Learjet. Secondly, every single pilots has to train in a similar aircraft to this one. Its sad to know that there was no survivors and that this crash could of been prevented but on the other hand I don't think anyone should blame the pilots or the controllers for this because even though we will never know why the pilot of the Cessna didn't make way for the 727, the fact is that with the 727 above and behind him and also he was on a training flight it would have been very difficult for him to see it. Also with the 727 pilots doing their landing steps and them having just over 10 seconds to see and avoid a collision, the pilots would have been facing a crisis. Even though the controllers made a few mistakes that may have made the situation worse for the pilots, just put yourself in their shoes and you would see how hard it is to keep an eye on two aircraft out of so many others you also have to keep an eye on. The simple fact is that you people can point fingers any direction you want about this but if you look into the people who were involved in this tragedy you can see why this makes sense and also the most important thing is that this crash made flying around most airports safer. Lots of roses for the people who perished in this disaster which struck the lovely village of DWIGHT Street.
