How close by did you live or worked? Not sure if you meant apartment building or office building. Either way that has to be so surreal yet so unreal at the same time!! I live like 6 hours from NYC but I still remember that morning so vividly. I actually didn't know anything was going on until my friend called me and said turn on my TV. First channel that it was tuned to had the coverage going. Ofcourse this was back before streaming. We had cable but it was on alot of the channels. Probably close to most of them had atleast something about going on. Me and my friend watched it while still on the phone together then then the second hit. That instant everybody watching had to realize instantly that the first plane was no accident. No way lightning strikes twice like that and as close as that. Still gives me a lump in my throat thinking back on seeing that second one come in. So we watched for awhile and then my friend says wanna go golfing. Yea for sure I told him. Had to take a break from that for a bit and plus it was a gorgeous day out that almost mid September day. But we get to the course and ofcourse they have the TV on and the first tower fell while we were on our way. So we teed off and sometime during the first nine the second fell. Such a waste of so many lives and two iconic NYC buildings!!!

So, I wasn't super close, but close enough to hear and see. I was up getting ready for class, had local ABC station on, we had a tiny balcony so I had that open bc, yes, it was absolutely gorgeous out. I hear the low plane and was like wtf!? I went out to look but my apt faced north, before I stepped back inside I heard the crash, it was so loud and I though something got chucked into my building, bc, who would think what happened happened. Quickly news reports a prop plane hit tower. Then as I was about to leave for class my tv went out... That was 2nd tower hitting. I put my am/fm radio Walkman on (lol) and listened to reports. As soon as I left my building, I turned south to wall towards class and saw them buildings on fire. I actually took pics, I regret it knowing now what it was, but I was shocked. At class my teacher was shaking writing on the board. We were slightly below ground, room had windows at top of wall, and we could see feet running and people screaming. We went outside and cop told us the towers were gone and pentagon hit and we were under attack, and we just could not compute. I remember the guy I ended up in a cab with, he'd been late for a presentation, was covered in debris, completely shell shocked, just saying "their gone, my friends are gone" over and over. My friend and I offered for him to stay with us bc he wasn't local but he declined. We got out of the city via little bridge into south Bronx. Got a cab there and we just sat staring at the skyline still gobstruck. My parents were in CT so my dad was able to get me once I was over all bridges. It wasn't til I got home and spoke to my best friend in Chicago, who'd been at sn early work meeting and not heard, that I just burst into tears. I remember what I wore, it was a Tuesday, 70s, blue sky w/ a few clouds. Unreal. Again, Im lucky bc I truly was never in danger and lost no one. But experience in moment was terrifying bc didn't know what would happen next, if more planes coming, or explosives etc. I also, thankfully, lost no one. But, I still get chills up my spine when I hear a low plane. 😢
