It means you own the shares directly through having a Holder Id number. Not the broker. “Think of the ASX (Australian Securities Exchange) as a meticulous librarian. Every time you borrow or return a book (in this case, shares), the librarian notes it down. So, if the ASX were a librarian, its book register would be the Clearing House Electronic Subregister System, or CHESS. ‘CHESS sponsored’ or ‘CHESS sponsorship’ is simply the way the ASX keeps tabs on share ownership. When you buy or sell shares, CHESS ensures there's a record of you owning those shares directly.”

Hey! Thanks so much for watching :) if you're concerned with safety, something to look at is CHESS sponsorship (which I've mentioned in this video). If you buy a stock on the ASX with a CHESS sponsored broker, it will be held in your own name. So just incase something happens, it's easy to get access to your shares because you own them directly. Depends on your goals. From a long-term investment perspective, say you make an initial investment of $1000. your investment portfolio will increase in value due to compound interest / growth over time. If you regularly add $200 a month for 20years, at 5% interest per year, you’d have about $84,919. ($35,000 or so would just be from interest alone)

I'm 100% new to this, thanks for the good info. I have a question. Say I had $1,000 and today I wanted to invest $100 in 10 different companies. Do I get charged a fee for each different company I invest in? Or since I'm doing it all at once is it only one fee? It's these seemingly simple things I get hung up on. Cheers!!

You’ll get charged for every single stock you buy. If you buy stocks in and index fund which allows you to have stocks in multiple companies you’ll be charged once but will have bought into multiple companies rather than buying from individual companies and building a portfolio that way
