Note to viewers: from z0 to z1, alpha_1 = +90. How so: point your thumb along the axis of rotation X-axis. curl your fingers, if the direction of curl (facing towards you) == direction of axis rotation. It is +90 degrees. This I believe is Maxwells Right hand rule. You can google it for verification.

shouldnt the angle be +90 degrees and the angle of rotation is in fact anti-clockwise from z0 to z1?

Yes that is correct, when we curl our fingers along the axis of rotation. along x1, we should get +90. You are correct.
