I agree with 90% of this video but I can’t say I agree with the “not buying souvenirs when traveling.” Personally, that $6 on a fridge magnet (that you reference in the vid) is worth it to me. When seeing it I do find myself occasionally reminiscing on a trip. And for me it’s a way to count my blessings and appreciate how fortunate I am to have traveled so much. Plus it can be a good icebreaker for a visitor - similar to a good coffee table book. Everyone is different though so I get it if you don’t find it engaging like I do. Appreciate the vid! Cheers!

Meal prep is a great one. I don't bother with restaurants usually because I have a stash of delicious chicken+rice+veggie meals that are ready to go in 2 minutes when it's lunch time. And when I do have a restaurant meal (usually with a larger family group) it feels very luxurious and decadent, even when it's basic diner/cafe stuff.

The one in one out clothing rule works well when you compound that with thrift stores. I recently found 3 wool sweaters from reputable brands for $15 total. Sometimes what you find at a thrift store stays in your wardrobe for years, sometimes it doesn’t work out and it rotates out in weeks or months…but in either case, the investment is low

I am doing all of this now! I'm so pleased! I cancelled 14 subscriptions in January that all snuck in last year. And now I'm watching much closer with a better plan for tracking all of our spending. I figure it is worth the "up to" 1 hour I spend doing it weekly! We are learning to use the library and watch less TV and minimalizing wardrobe and using up what we already own. All of these things are possible because I decluttered my household. I spend less time cleaning and managing my home (on top of a full-time job and side gig) so I have time to manage finances better. I have a goal to teach myself to repair more things in my house this year (after I did a few last year). I also manage my photos and digital content much better, so we also don't need souvenirs. Our gift giving is minimalized, too. I'm currently writing up my 5 and 10 year plans in order to determine priorities. It feels SOOO good to be on top of all of these things.

As an Aussie-Filipino living in Sydney, FRUGALITY is a norm in our family, raised in poverty in the Philippines, and then MIGRATED to Australia, a few years ago, it is taught to us by my Dear Mother, because of hard times, we learned to be frugal in the early years of our lives, which is good for the family, we AVOIDED wastage in everything we did, from food, electricity, and other utilities, as much as POSSIBLE, I used everything to CUT wastage, NOW, I am with my own family, and we also CUT in our expenses, we pay in cash, avoiding credit card payments as possible, have a spending tracker apps, learn to eat healthily, and doing exercises to avoid being sick, since then, I never looked back and started investing a FEW years ago, and NOW we have our rental properties, BIG thanks, Mom, for all the wisdom you gave to us

If you wanna be successful, you must take responsibility for your emotions, not place the blame on others. In addition to making you feel more guilty about your faults, pointing the finger at others will only serve to increase your sense of personal accountability. There's always a risk in every investment, yet people still invest and succeed. You must look outward if you wanna be successful in life...

As someone who has experienced a few big income swings in the last 10 years, the easiest thing is to keep your budget as-is and save/invest all the extra income. That said, I'd also suggest (1) give yourself a one-time meaningful treat to celebrate, maybe dinner at a restaurant that's outside your normal budget, a weekend away, a piece of art from an artist you've always admired, or a tool that will get you into a new hobby. (2) Check whether there's any areas in your budget where you really could get a significant value add from more spending, maybe giving more to charity, adopting a pet, or spending more in local shops instead of Amazon. (3) Using the extra room in your budget to invest in quality. Couldn't scrape together the cash up front for a $200 blender or pair of shoes? Now you can. Making a "sinking fund" for this is good - put aside a set amount each month for this kind of purchase and dip in as needed (for example, when your current shoes wear out).
@kerry_runs

I actually make all my own bread now (#1). I'm pretty sure it costs me _more_ money because I buy good quality flour, salt, and olive oil (#2), but the bread tastes a lot better, is probably a lot healthier, and I don't throw any of it out because I control how big the loaf is. I like souvenirs if some thought was put into them. Cheap, typically useless, mass produced trinkets made in an overseas sweat shop have no appeal to me. I do tend to pick up quality items and local handcrafted goods though. (eg. Hand carved wooden mixing spoon with a lobster claw carved handle from an east coast lobster town, kiddos have chosen local art and gold star earnings from an observatory visit, etc.). Mementos can be practical and have longevity if we look beyond the usual tourist traps.

Then I just transfer her some money, and she ends up buying new clothes for the kids. That's just the way she is! Hi , what we do in our family for Christmas gifts is to do a secret santa. We make a list of our preferences for gifts of at least 3 items and is distributed to all participants. Then we have a person send you the secret person you will be buying a gift from the list. We have a maximum amount of $50. We then set et a date for all the family to enjoy the event. In addition we will buy a prank anonymous gift. We then go around the room to pick this prank gift. The next person can pick a gift from the stack or take one from the person that already picked one. We have a lot of fun and you only buy one gift + the prank one. Hope this inspires someone else. Bye Mika

Some of the things my boyfriend and I do to save: Cycle subscriptions: for instance we sign up to Hulu while Hells Kitchen is on and then cancel and go back to Fisney Plus for Mandalorian or Moon Knight. There's also tons of free apps I between such as Viki has a free tier for K dramas and Movies. Also Crackle, Tubi, and Plex For eating out we limit our eating out to once a month. There is a Sushie place next to our grocery store and they have good deals such as 2 rolls for $15 so we go n eat and get a roll a piece spend maybe $ 20-25 and then do our shopping so we don't shop hungry which saves and we stick to our list. Also there's tons of cute budget journals as well as free pdfs online u can print for free to not have to pay anything and we write out all monthly expenses in it. And anytime we spend anything it gets written down immediately in the journal. It keeps better awareness

Early in our relationship, we'd buy just to buy *something*, and what a waste of money, and a lot of stress trying to figure out what to get. To celebrate special days and holidays, rather than buying a gift, we do something together, from a small get-away or something really simple, like ordering dinner and watching a movie, to just being together, working on a jigsaw puzzle. Really, it shouldn't be about the things, anyway. 😊

I meal prep as well, though I choose a bit more variety (for a better nutritional balance in the long run). Great points about the gift giving and optimizing who to give gifts to v.s. other expressions of showing love and appreciation!

I love giving gifts. But I do cheap, thoughtful gifts vs. pricey material gifts.

While I agree about trying to salvage/repair items before buying a new one outright. Often there seems to be a barrier to this where it's just so much more effort to it taking up much more of time, money and mental bandwith.

Real question about the gift thing: does your wife also give cash to you as a gift? Why don't you forego gifts completely? In my family we did that and only bring gifts, if we stumble upon something clever or surprising.

I like the advice of buying QUALITY not not cheap stuff. I dont ever buy new and if I do, its the best that I could afford and last much much longer. My pots and pans were very expensive and after many many many years, it still looks brand new.

I had a good laugh when you talked about shirts. I wear two colors of work shirts because I found myself standing in my closet trying to choose what to wear and realized it wasn't that important and I just wasted 5 minutes.
