With the deal maker, I had a guy go on how a shotgun was cheaper at Wal-Mart, so I told him I would help him out. I drew a map of directions from our store to the Wal-Mart and slid it across the counter to him. He stormed out pissed, but of course came back later.

OR you have the person that has done all of their research online for a new firearm, has done all the model comparisons, decided which model that they wanted based on potential usage and needs, searched the local (within a half hour drive) gun shops prices and waited for sales (or other discounts and rebates), walked in and waited in line, and then actually didn't look around and just told the person behind the counter EXACTLY what they came in to buy. Works GREAT for me every time!

there is a reason we tell people we will call them when we get to it. he needs to pay close attention to what he was entering, screw ups on paperwork can result in a $10k fine and maybe loss of the FFL, and 30 boxes are a lot to sort through to find that one firearm. sometimes the names are on the label but often not and you have to open them to check. at my shop, we schedule appointments for transfers after it's checked in, I don't usually have to deal with 30 boxes at once but I've had UPS, FedEx G and Express, and USPS all come with stuff to check in while I've had customers in store.

Worked a gun counter during college days after military in 80s. Had a jackass security guard come in to look at the colt python and cobra. They were new to our location. Said Jackass slipped a .38 round into cylinder to see if it fit in the .357 as I quickly stuck two fingers through grabbing the top strap. He was pulling me over the counter trying to close the cylinder and screaming as I wouldn’t I wouldn’t let go. He ended up complaining as I refused to serve him after, I got written up but promptly quit. I can’t work with or for stupid apparently. Go figure.

On the other side of the equation, as a customer, I have had a gun store employee greet me then proceed to stalk me, Every case I looked in, he wanted to tell me all about the gun in the case. It got really creepy when he started following me so closely that when I stopped, he ran into me. I had been in this store probably a hundred times in the seven years it has been open. I have bought 7 or 8 firearms and countless parts and accessories. The owner and me are on a first name basis and I didn’t want to get the employee in trouble, but this was over the top. Just asked the guy his name and if he was new and how long he had been employed there. Told him if I see something I would like to look at, I would just call for him. Yeah, there's two types of new gun owners, though. The young ones who are in their late teens/early 20's and those are the guys like you who are self-conscious and honestly are much easier to get along with than the other type - the 50+ year olds who never got into guns but all of a sudden want to and are confident and clueless and they're convinced they know what they're talking about because they read a few posts on an online forum and that I'm wrong because I'm 20 years younger than them but been actively shooting for 30 of my 38 years. Honestly, don't worry about it, they're not judging you any more than they judge any new customer, and believe me, they're happy to see young people getting into shooting. Just be honest, say you're fairly new, it's your first time buying, you're pretty sure you know what you want, and why, and they are almost always happy to tell you any information they think might be helpful to you. That being said, not all gun store employees actually know wtf they're talking about and merely want to sell you as much extra shit as possible, so keep that in mind if you're going to a larger place with lots of employees. If you're in a rural area that type of experience is more rare, though.

I bought my first gun at 21 when I got my CWL. A handgun. I happily shot a variety of handguns at the range over the years, and did several training classes. I would never had considered myself an expert, of course, but I was really comfortable with handguns. Had never shot a long gun on my life, when we started having coyotes issues on my farm. We went in and got some advice from the gun store employee for a budget shotgun, his recommendation for our needs. All was going well… until I asked if we needed to buy a magazine separately or what. 😅 Cue embarrassment. Like I said, I’d never even held a long gun before that day, so I thought it would work the same as my handguns. 😂😂😂

Other stores, there's quiet, brooding old men working the store who seem terribly inconvenienced to do so much as ring up my bill.

I did research at home and I felt a Glock 19 would be best for me.. I walked told them I want a Glock 19 they only had one left so I took it paid for it and then I left. And the two guys that work there were nothing but nice to me. It took them two minutes to grab my Glock. Took another 15 for them to type all this stuff into the computer which is fine I expected that. It takes forever to get a permit to carry. I think it was three weeks total. But I actually walking into the gun store no issues.

I prince of priced once. Was helping a family member find a carry gun and went to a shop on their side of town. This was during one of those big runs on guns and ammo years so a lot of basic stuff was out of stock. Well this shop's response to low stock was to simply keep adding to the price, so their prices were a bit of a sticker shock, as opposed to my main shop which always sells low and would rather run out of stock than gouge any of their customers.

I had a moment where I was "The Deal Maker" jackass by accident. I was buying a Ruger MkIV 22/45 Tactical, and I thought they were charging over MSRP by about $200. Turns out, the guy behind the counter told me it was a MkIV 22/45 Tactical, but it was really a MkIV 22/45 Tactical *Lite,* which is about 10 oz lighter, and runs just shy of $600. It was a big scene, calling over other guys, until the owner was like, "Dude, the one you're looking at on Ruger's website is the 22/45 Tactical, not the 22/45 Tactical Lite that we have here in the case." I was pretty embarrassed, but they said not to worry about it, that it was embarrassing it took them that long to realize why it cost so much more. I ended up getting it, because I really like the super light weight compared to the steel ones. Paid $200 more than I was planning, but OMFG, it's my new favorite gun. I just gotta decide on a suppressor to match it. They are just too cool, and make frequent pistol training very affordable. Not a single jam so far (granted, only about 600-800 rounds in). Runs silky-smooth. Worth the brief embarrassment, lol.

Funny that I stumble on your comment, cause I've been itching to buy a Mark IV. So far I train on a borrowed MkIII at the range so I'm used to a steeper grip angle than 45, but the 22/45 and all its variations are definitely on my radar. Only downside I can see so far is the price (so you were definitely in your right to haggle on that lol), and the lack of markings or dots on the sights (but that can be helped).

Then there's the Army veteran with his endless stories; "Back when I was in the Army we didn't have pistols. You were given a bucket of bullets and a slingshot. You see, 9mm is a crap caliber and the M9 is a crap gun. You'd be better off throwing it at the enemy. Never shoulda gotten rid of the 45. This is back when I was stationed in Germany. I was at Wise-in-heimer barracks, a little place on the banks of the Shoppenhof, you might not of heard it, it's world famous for it's supply of hops. Yeah I drank a lot of Hopscotch back in my day. Oh, you sell ammo cans? I remember ammo cans. One time Frank was standing on a whole stack of ammo cans in the motorpool when ol' hank came along, grabbed one can from the bottom, and the whole shabang fell down. Frank lost a couple ah teeth from that. We called him snuggletooth after that. Yep, there's nothing worse than an LT with a compass. I see you have AR-15s. I carried an M-16 with a bayonet. We had bayonets in the conex until they disappeared. We'd take 'em to the bar and open beer bottles with 'em? Ever see a beer bottle open by a bayonet? That's how they did it in Napoleon's Army, except they used swords, and drank champagne. I had champagne once at the Army Ball. You mix Champagne and Hennessey oooo boy. You want to see a sergeant major barf on a captain, lemme tell you what!"

This was ingenius. I'm a waitress at a high volume bar in Atlanta. I have to deal with a nice chunk of the gunshop customer stereotypes on a regular. Yeah I was sitting there comparing the bar equivalents of these stereotypes. The ONLY ones I don't got in my serving area is The Fudd and The Pick Up Artist. BUt yes, I do get The Wife Alert (asking if our bar is going to show up on bank statement) and even, believe it or not, The Silent But Deadly- I ain't kidding you. I walk up to the individual (usually a man, but had a couple women, too) and asked if they needed anything. They just stared. Uncomfortable silence. I ask again. "Would you like a drink?" Silence. Then holds thumb up. I say, "uh, does the thumb up mean yes, you'd like something? or no, I'm okay." Silence for a few seconds. "I'm Ok." I mumble, "yeah." Turn around, then mumble, "I ain't got time for this (bleep)." THe one I hate the most is the Resident- the one that camps out in my area for eternity, but doesn't order anything and doesn't tip me. I can deal with the Snob, the messy Meal Time Six, EVEN the Deal Maker (since they're stuck at our bar at that point, they;re gonna order, but just order the lesser expensive option and minimally tip) Customer service....

TOM-time is money Working on commission, no time to answer questions or humor a browsing patron, the need to brush you aside because their buddy just walked in. #3. Safety Instructor Does not let you handle all the weapons, insists on holding weapons for you, insists you clear the weapon right after they’ve cleared it and acknowledge that the weapon is cold, asks to see your ID before handling a gun(not firing).
