Battery is not about assault and battery it's about the thrash music scene in 1980s LA The lyric "Cannot kill the family, Battery is found in me" is a statement that while society at large doesn't understand the scene, those within it (i.e. "the family") will fiercely defend it as a show of solidarity against the glam scene that was popular in the Los Angeles area.

Right to a point. Master of puppets is actually a concept album about being controlled, either by internal or by external forces. Master is drugs, sanitarium is mental conditions, disposable is military, so on and so forth. If I remember correctly, battery is about not being able to control yourself. They did, however, get the idea by the thrash scene

That’s correct. The name of the song is derived from Battery Street (SF), where some of the clubs were located that Metallica played at in the early days. Obviously the lyrics can also be interpreted in other ways, but they were inspired by that early club scene in SF.

"Battery" isn't about assault and battery. A very prominent club in that scene they used to play called the Old Waldorf at was located on Battery Street in San Francisco. Basically it's them talking about the thrash metal scene in in the Bay Area and how that club was important to them, hence the line "Cannot kill the family Battery has found in me." That and your whole entry on "King Nothing" is a bit of a stretch as a "hidden detail". Metallica has a lot of songs with similar structures to each other.

There’s a keyboard backing the vocal track on “Fade to Black.” This was to assist James so he stayed in key, as he was not a confident singer in those days. “For Whom the Bell Tolls” was sped up, a common production technique to give a “tighter” feel. Because it’s a song from the analog tape days, and speeding up tape increases pitch, the entire song is slightly sharp. Anyone who has played along on guitar or bass will likely have noticed. The scream during the bridge of “Ride the Lightning” is Lars. Other James guitar solos (other than “Nothing Else Matters” as mentioned in the video) include the clean interlude of “Master of Puppets,” the solo over the clean guitar on “To Live is to Die,” the outro solo on “Outlaw Torn,” among a few others.

The acoustic guitar riff in the begining of in my darkest hour was written By Dave in one take when he heard Cliff died, but the lyrics are about his then-wife Diana

Concerning the horn not being present in The Unforgiven 3. It is, but not as you think..... It's not buried underneath the keys at the start. Listen to the last thing you hear on the track.. that one note guitar swell.......

Dude. I have been thinking the same exact thing about king nothing for YEARS ever since I started playing the 2 songs on guitar. Even the main riff is close to the same.

Battery was about Battery Street in San Francisco, where Metallica had a lot of gigs in the early days.

Unforgiven and Unforgiven 3 have heavy verses and clean choruses. Something they started with in the first one which made it stand out so much more compared to other ballads doing the clean, mellow verses and coming in strong and heavier for the chorus, which is the structure they return to with Unforgiven 2. For that reason, i feel that it makes Unforgiven 2 just a little less special than the others. Still a banger though.

Every Metallica fan knows the meaning of "Bass solo, take one" Well, Nothing Else Matters is the most James' song, so I think that it's also obvious, that there is no Kirk here And To Live Is To Die! C'mon, everybody knows that It's about Cliff! Okay, I can agree with In My Darkest Hour, Metallica fans might not know that it's also about Cliff, but every Megadeth fan does But the fact that King Nothing is Enter Sandman bastard is not something that you know or don't know, it's something you HEAR Facts that you didn't include: - there is a quiet "fuck" hidden behind the guitars in For Whom The Bell Tolls vocal track - choruses in multiple songs from AJFA were copy-pasted - One and Death Magnetic are Fade To Black bastards - One and For Whom The Bell Tolls are based on books ...yeah, Andriy Vasilenko

Cliff was a monster, but wouldn't be too difficult to say "bass solo, take one!" On the second go around.

I think you missed the boat on the Enter Sandman/King Nothing comparison. Enter Sandman very closely resembles another song in the Metallica catalogue in key, tone, and structure: Where ever I May Roam. Het: "Hey, Kirk, I like this Enter Sandman riff you wrote so much, I spun this song off of it. Check it out!" (Plays Where I may Roam riff) Kirk: "Ha! The fans will never notice! Can I play Wah on the solo just like Sandman?" Het: "Yeeahhh, little buddy!!!" (Laughs in evil)

The "Bass solo: take one" was a lie, it was actually the third take as he had different bass solos before the pulling teeth solo.

Wow somebody got Battery wrong. Battery was written as a tribute to Battery St. in San Francisco where they frequently gigged and the connection with the fans during the club days. Assault and battery maybe is how you felt after the song but written on that theme Battery was not.

The bell in "for whom the bell tolls" is actually an anvil they hit with a hammer in a stairwell In the video for The Memory Remains, because of the rotating room they all were sunglasses so they could close their eyes while performing so that they didn't get dizzy or throw up. Cliff actually had several more minutes that he wanted to record for Anesthesia Pulling Teeth... unfortunately he had to shorten his original idea so that it could be put on the album with the proper time length.

I'm 44 years old and been a fan since Ride The Lightning 84 and there is nothing in this video that I dont already kno but I will point out that Metallica had all the time in the world when they went into the studio to record the Black album. So yeah James if he wanted to coulda easily showed Kirk how to play Nothing Else Matters.

In My Darkest Hour is not about Cliff. The music was written when Dave found out he died. The lyrics are about he longtime on/off girlfriend, Diana.

you could have made the list an even 10 if you would have mentioned that "orion" is also one of their lovecraft inspired songs, bringing the total to 5. it's also the most bad-ass song they ever wrote, so there's that too.

5:55 That's Eli Wallach, who played Blondie in The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly. He was also in Wall Street II with Michael Douglas. He died not long ago, past ninety-years old I believe. I had no idea he was in The Misfits. Glenn Danzig got the name of his band from that movie.
