I just like the word bel canto. The way it rolls. And now knowing the actual definition I think the definition matches the sound of the word. ☺

Extremely helpful video, and you definitely helped clear up a lot of misconceptions I've had about mixed voice. Lots of misinformation out there, which is why I keep coming back to this channel. Thanks for the content!

Thanks for another upload. I would like to have this as the only channel I learn my technique from. I have already corrected my onsets, mouth and neck tension and changed my whole approach to making my singing voice as an extension of my speaking voice by focusing only on the naturality aspect of my singing with an understanding that it will grow stronger with practice and therefore sound better. And by practicing at least 5 days a week over the last 4 months my voice has significantly improved. So this motivates me to ask if you ever want to do an actual vocal technique tutorial? For example, vibrato. I'd be really interested in your approach. I feel like I should soon add that one to my vocal capabilities.

I'm really glad that you have learned so much! I try to stray away from technique videos because singing is not a one-size fits all endeavor. My demonstration of one technique may work one viewer, and not work for another, so while I am not opposed to filming a lesson I give, I don't want to teach specific techniques in a vacuum.

I've been watching your channel for a while off and on, but this is so liberating to hear. It's nice hearing this stuff make sense practically as opposed to just confusing me. Could you possibly explain what people mean when they talk about the 'First and second break'? :)

Constructive feedback sandwich time! Good: Very informative, clear and entertaining video. I'd love to hear more vocal examples from you, hearing your register, your head voice, your mixed voice notes would be great. Needs improvement: whether done ironically or not, the title is quite click-baity. The quality of your content doesn't need those kind of advertising hacks, it's the reason I and other friends will never click on any "vocal coach reacts" videos. Good: lighting and presentation much improved. Quality is overall on the improve. Overall, solid stuff man.

Yeah, I understand the clickbait thing. I want to grow the channel, and so I have talked to a couple of people in marketing, and as sad as it is, the only way I am going to attract people that the algorithm isn't targeting is by using 'grabbier' titles. I don't like it either, but the market is the market. I just want my content to stand on its own and I want to counter so much of the bad information out there, and until I am seen by a wider audience I won't be able to do that.
@SprightlyGnome
@SprightlyGnome 5 жыл бұрын
Ah, that's a tricky one. Fair call. I guess it'll have to be a necessary evil for the short term then, what you're doing will definitely hold an audience once you have them. But rest assured if you start using emojis with *TRY NOT TO LAUGH* or *MUST WATCH TO BELIEVE* then I'm outta here. Keep it up man!

What's your opinion on the singing technique of sticking your tongue out, which singers claim "creates more space at the back of the throat, releasing tension"?

I get confused with the passagio. If I completely relax, sing quietly, and let my voice slip where it wants, it wants to go into head voice quite low, like G3. The louder I get, the higher I go before it wants to go into head voice. But I'm supposed to be some kind of tenor, and you're telling me your passagio is Eb4 as a baritone. So clearly I'm not thinking of it correctly.

I thought u would mention Supported Notes. This term suddenly merged from somewhere. Everyone has different definition of it. Mostly said it's an open, strainless and resonant sound.
@ZachAnsley
@ZachAnsley 5 жыл бұрын
A supported sound is a sound that has proper and sustained diaphragmatic engagement throughout the duration of the phrase. That's a really quick and simple definition of it. Anything else is wrong.

Thank you for the informations, i heard some vocal teachers saying : "sing with compression" is that wrong too? Most of vocal teachers also say that compression is what creates distortion in the sound. I'd like to know your thoughts on this.

Thanks for clarifying up some terms! I do have a question in regards to mixed voice though. There's a Korean singer named Kim Sohyang who is known for her wide belt/mixed voice. She definitely does not have a two octave mixed range, but she does have a wider range than most being able to belt up to a C#6 (!) So if mixed voice only consists of a narrow range, what exactly is Sohyang doing? I will link a vocal range video with her belt/mixed voice starting at 2:17: kzbin.info/www/bejne/j6HTeZaYlLGgn6c
@kalkwiese
@kalkwiese 5 жыл бұрын
Belting basically means pushing the chest voice really high. When you do that you decide not to get into the passagio (!) so you don't use your mixed voice there. A good example for belting would be Whitney Houston's "And I will always love you" line. So if your singer really belts those notes out like that it's probably not a mixed voice. Pushing the chest voice so high would be bad for the mechanism though.
@kalkwiese
@kalkwiese 5 жыл бұрын
I listened to the part you linked there. Some of the noted were belted I'd say, the lighter ones probably weren't though. I'm not a professional though, Zach's opinion would be interesting
@clairek2091
@clairek2091 5 жыл бұрын
@@kalkwiese Thanks for the response! Maybe it's because I'm more familiar with contemporary technique, but I've been taught that everyone mixes by F#4. In the context of Sohyang's vocal range video, this would mean that every note from G#4 to B5 is her mixed voice. Whitney would also be using her mixed voice up until she sustains "you" in IWALY which is her head voice. Your definition of belting is actually the same as how I would describe a chest dominant mix that Demi Lovato & Jessie J does. (Ariana Grande is someone with a head dominant mix while Sohyang here has a balanced mix.) Of course, my interpretation of mixed voice is very different from what's being described in the video so that's why I wanted to know what Sohyang was doing. :)

Hey Zach, I just want to ask regarding KT here. Apparently he always advocates a bright 'lah' ping-is-king approach, saying that it is the only vowel that will grow one's voice. When I told that to my former vocal teacher who has a degree in vocal pedagogy, he immediately dismissed it as total nonsense and responded to me that vocal growth has nothing to do with one's choice of timbral sound, and that brightness has nothing to do with resonance. What is your take on the situation, since you have a degree in vocals as well?
@ZachAnsley
@ZachAnsley 5 жыл бұрын
I dismiss everything he says. I have yet to hear a single point of pedagogy that he produces that I would consider salient.

I think my biggest question in this video is, why are we able to create mixed sounding notes that expand across about 2 octaves if a true mix is only about 5 tones? I'm completely confused as to how we can create that very mixed, chest like belting quality that spans across a variety of notes
