The most ingenious robbery I ever heard of was a robber who put an "Out Of Order" sign on a night deposit box at a bank. He then mounted a fake night deposit box next to it, waited for businesses to make their deposits, and then retrieved his fake box, took the "out of Order Sign" down, and escaped with the cash.

I was questioned back in the late 80s over this kind of thing...lol. Southern Indiana and Central Kentucky! This was a spin off from fishing bags out of night drops...I installed physical security equipment for 35 years and seen it all...there's a lot of intelligent thieves but 95% get caught eventually!

The craziest one I heard was of this guy who had an RV parked at the parking entrance of some zoo, he charged people daily for parking there and going to the zoo, one day out of nowhere he was gone, the people who were regulars were unsure if maybe the zoo lost its employee so they asked staff and staff said that they have never charged for parking. This dude was charging people for years and I believe he got away with around 1M, and living on some shore off the coast.

The first one. 😂😂 the store owner just bought a big, fancy looking safe and left it in what looks like a stock room rather than his own office. Luckily, the position of the safe just happened to be right in front of a camera so they had footage to prove to the insurance company that there was a robbery. Just after he got the safe, burglars broke in. Lucky for them they had brought the perfect angle grinder to cut into the heavy duty safe that they had no way of knowing the owner had just bought, and 'special cough syrup' for the sparks. That isnt a clever complicated heist. Thats dumb, unconvincing insurance fraud.

A robbery that occured in the German city of Bremen was for me the best. It was in the early 1960s and Germany was still very much a cash society, that is, very few credit/debit cards. A security company was delivering two large boxes containing six million Deutschmarks to a private bank in a small side-street near the Weser river. When the guards exited the bank and drove off, the robber, dressed in a security company uniform, entered the bank and said that they'd given them a wrong box. He put his own box on the table, picked up the "wrong" box and left - with three million Deutschmarks, which was an absolute fortune in those days. The folks in the bank only noticed that they had one box full of old newspapers about two hours later; by which time the robber was long gone. I like the story because no-one came to harm and the bank was reimbursed from their insurance. To this day, who the robber was remains a mystery. MsG

That was not a high security safe... Cheesy Fireproof gun safe. Actually that safe isn't supposed to be in that pharmacy at all...insurance more than likely would not allow a safe of this type ever...TL-15 or TL-30 safe with ½" or 1" plate is usually recommended.

I've got a better one: Back in the 80s, a group of Tokyo thieves build a large steel box and painted a bank logo on it. They drove up at night to a branch bank near the entertainment district and placed the box in front of the night deposit slot with a note saying something like, "We are very sorry. Our night deposit box is out of order. Please make your deposits into this box." They got away with at least $250,000 and never attempted the crime again. They were never caught.

I remember the shop here got one of those hole in the wall ATMs and everyone knew it was a bad idea. A few days later the front of it was completely ripped off, you could see the rollers and stuff.
