Gosh, thank you so much for modulargrid links that are so legible and accessible. I feel like your videos are singlehandedly making modular look approachable, fun, and - maybe even easy, once decisions are made? I love your no wrong answers commitment to tearing apart and rebuilding your toys to do more and more; and I enjoy that you're wanting to downsize and commit to a compact set, instead of lugging around 8,000hp to your mate's backyard. Love it.

I really like your emphasis on live performance and creating something for people to enjoy in the moment, rather than slaving for a perfect track or just noddling and going nowhere, the energy you have for performance gives what you are doing momentum and movement which is life. Also your love of Steevio is justified his music is Amazing, and I am glad you have brought him to my attention, his tune Cynefin is pure magic 👍🏽👊🏽

A super good combo I found for side chaining is the WMD Performance Mixer and the Noise Engineering Pons Asinorum. Each channel on the WMD PM has a VCA input, the Pons Asinorum can be set to be a ramp up. So, pop you kick trigger into the PA and you instantly have 4 outputs that can be used for sjidechaining at different speeds too. Like I like a pad to be a bit slower than say the bass. Also, drops in modular become a bit easier when you get a more capable sequencer that has many tracks (6 or more) and the ability to quickly change multiple track sequences. The all of a sudden mutes become less important, but if you want mutes, the WMD PM has that too.

ive grown pretty fond of the NE Muta Jovis modules for mutes as they also work as cascading mults, but instead of routing audio through them i route the gates and triggers for everything because i had a nasty habit of muting the tails off of sounds that would have sounded nice gently bleeding off into the next section of music. cheap as chips modules too ;)

Also for the mix filtering you can use the WORNG LRMSMSLR to get stereo filtering from two mono filters. It's even useful With a stereo filter like blades because it means you can do things like keep the centre elements unfiltered while filtering out the sides of your mix & really make the most of having two different filters

Really great tips here! Lots to mull over and chew on. I wanted to share my approach to sick dropz. I've got a WMD Overseer, stereo DJ-type Low & High pass filter with Resonance. With the knob in the center, the audio is flat. Swing it anticlockwise you kick in the LPF and go clockwise and it raises the HPF. I'm controlling the HPF cuttoff with a Synthrotek Ribbon via their Mattson Ribbon Controller module. Similar to the LS-1, you can slide the ribbon and the moment you let go, the Overseer returns to flat response. Sick!

I use the Lapsus OS similar to the way you use the lightstrip. The Lapsus has a fader for 0-5v and x2 outputs. The two outputs would control the filter cut offs for a pair of Doepfer A-106-5 filters.

Slightly late to the party but on the topic of sidechain..ST Modular Duck is a 4hp sidechainer available as a diy kit and pretty cheap! I use this this little guy in conjunction with my WMD PM to sidechain my drones and atmospheres with my drums..really glued things together nicely and a pretty essential for me. Hot tip: Using sidechain to create ‘drops’ in eurorack Muting all of your gates which flow into your all of your drum sounds whilst NOT muting your atmospheres/textures allows for the sidechain to stop..increasing volume etc which then allows you to change some areas within your patch/fade things in and prepare for the next phase of your set. When you’re ready, unmute your gates and boom!!

Great video. Thanks for the LS1 tip. I use a Robaux 3PT macro knob for the same thing, but having something that snaps back is really useful! Keep up the good work, your videos are very valuable to me! You have lot of modules dealing with drums (sequencing, playing, muting) and end of chain effects (sidechain, master compression and reverb). Have you ever considered replacing all of those modules (Salmple, Hats908, 3 4x Mutes, Cockpit, Colour Pallette, Robaux SWT16+, Pico DSP+ backpack) with a TR-8S? The TR-8S does all of the things those modules do and more. My quick estimation: the modules cost about €2000 (and 80-90 HP of space!) combined. The TR-8S costs €700 new. I got mine for about €500. It plays 11 tracks of samples, FM or ACB (808, 909...!), it has all the sequence stuff you need, labeled mute buttons, an external stereo input that you can sidechain to the kick, apply reverb to, and put delay and master compression on. And above all, it’s very performance oriented (it’s called “Rhythm Performer” for a reason). Bonus feature: it’s also an audio interface. Would be interested in your opinion. Thanks!

@mylarmelodies 10 ай бұрын
Good shout and yes indeed, in fact the older TR-8! Modular drums have their own tricks and benefits, but of course just about anything else is cheaper…
@renekasbergen
@renekasbergen 10 ай бұрын
@@mylarmelodies Thank you for replying. I think I understand: modular drums can offer much more in terms of sound design and flexibility (or modulatability - is that a word?). And it’s not only a financial or HP/space reduction thing. Just like you, I’m trying to optimize for *performance*. For me, total control over drums (sequencing, sound and effects) is just too important for electronic music (especially in a performance context) to have scattered across multiple modules, some of which are hard to reach or operate. I want that stuff visible and adjustable right in front of my rack, without patch cables getting in the way… anyway, keep it up, I love your videos. I keep learning new things!
@mylarmelodies
@mylarmelodies 10 ай бұрын
@renekasbergen For me it comes down to the fact there’s a certain grammar to hand made drums, and it’s hard to get ad-hoc generative ones to be quite so on point - though they have their place, especially in the studio

I had to research what the 12 grid red lights were in your last vid and found the HN mutes. Ingenious! Might be fun using the doepfer quad switch to have each input to the mutes have a selectable drum module. although you would have to use some type of Y cable out of the swt to the additional drum modules to keep the pattern on both as well. Youre always great inspiration!

minimize to maximize when it comes to live play.. never understood having walls and walls of the stuff, I think building a self-contained skiff or case that puts all the controls in front of you is the way to go... practice and familiarity of where your controls are is essential

I'll bet that you could prob squeeze some little labels in between the buttons on those mutes. Even three or four letters would be enough of a reminder. I bought a Dymo label maker for myself several years ago. One of the best purchases I have ever made.

Really due to the importance of building muscle memory and having instant access - no matter what the state of the SWT16, I can whack those mutes and I know stuff will get muted. Also as I’m blending some gates from other sources then it means you have a single place that mutes happen, all in one spot.

Wonderful module. So accurate too. One super fun thing to do if you’ve 3 oscillators (or resonating filters) is to build chords and crossfade between them. It’s true joy. Takes a while to dial in but it’s epic :)

I'd say my modular sets are 1/2 improv and 1/2 programmed, my drums are programmed and I'll have an initial sequence on the voices that riff off of and my drums are on mutes and other switches and my erica synths drum sequencer is always on fill mode
@johnhowell6214

I use my Erica sequencer in mute mode mostly, but using the Happy Nerding mutes could open the sequencer up for other duties. I'll have to check the fill mode out more and see if I'll have to make a change. ;)

@@johnhowell6214 I have a low gain electronics A/B with mute in the middle so I use that for mutes but I'd prefer having the kick, hats, and cymbal on something pushable. Try fill mode, its great shift then step/tap

Just, like, my opinion, man, but if you sacrifice the Hexmix AND Hexpander for an external mixer or drop multiple Hexmix and Hexpanders into a sidecase mixer and only touch them for effects, you could probably fit most of what you want in your one large case (minus the mixer/mixer sidecase). Might be hard to find a mixer with the same control and number of outputs for sidechaining/routing, but it really sounds like you just want a compressor (what you're using the Endorphines Cockpit 2 for) to make the loud percussion pop above everything else; I don't have a good recommendation beyond Hexinverter's Mutant Hot Glue, but then we're back to limited space and control. Same for the Colour Palette: you are only using it for compression - why use such large and overly-complicated modules to accomplish this? Also, just my opinion, but having multiple sources of mutes, coming from both the Happy Nerding 4x Mutes and the Hexmix now seems overly complicated - at this point, I would ask: "What are you using the Hexmix and Hexpander for, that you can't accomplish with an external, multi-channel audio mixer and smaller effect-send modules, so you can free up space in your main case and simplify your controls? Why do you need more, readily-available control over channel mix/volume/EQ when you are creating drops through mutes?" Just to beat the dead horse I already killed, I would argue that you touch so few of the nobs on both Hex modules that they are not worth the space.
@mylarmelodies
@mylarmelodies 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah it’s all good points - the problem is if you ditch the Hex, you have to find ways to mix and sum elsewhere, and using an external mixer (which I’ve done in the past!) is a bit of a mare live as you have to patch everything into it at a show. You also need to find a way to do sidechaining within it? And you may need an external compressor anyhow…it’s all a question of what’s easier to set up and carry…

The snare getting lost in the side chain would be fixed by offsetting the time. Typically claps and snares in a modern production are nudged forward so they come in just before the kick. That way you get the transient, then it would duck, then if long enough you'd get some tail. In modular you need a gate sequencer that can offset timing. Often in modular that means putting the snare/clap on a beat early and delaying the time so it's almost on the beat you want it. Just sharing a random thought while watching.
@mylarmelodies
@mylarmelodies 2 жыл бұрын
Ja, good idea. For me a good solution too would be to not allow it to be sidechained but maybe submix it into the kick channel so it’s always available - takes another mixer/unity mixer tho!
