I had Outrun on the Amstrad and remember clearly how my heart sank when I loaded it up. After the initial shock there was this embarrassing phase when I tried to convince myself that I could maybe enjoy this game. So, I put on my Walkman and listened the cassette and pretended I was playing the arcade game I loved so much. It was a pathetic sight. I don’t think I ever felt so low when playing a video game.

One that I would put in the Excellent category is Motos, which strangely got ports to the 3 main 8-bits. Sure it's a Namco game, but I'd definitely call it one of the more obscure Namco games of the era and on the surface it isn't something that looks like it would be easy to throw together any kind of sales pitch for. The CPC version however is an excellent adaptation and really shines on the platform.

Luckily there were also many great ports, like The New Zeland Story, Bubble Bobble, Rainbow Islands, Commando, Ikari Warriors (not the US version!), Marble Madness, Turbo Outrun, Space Harrier and Gauntlet, just to name a few.

Bruno's boxing on C64 had a cassette for each opponent! Chase HQ was soooo disappointing at the time. I started to learn arcade ports were garbage. You could probably do a good video on crappy games based on movies on early computers. I had a copy of Big Trouble in Little China on C64 and that was soul destorying.

Chase HQ on the C64 is _interesting_ - it was converted by Teque, who also did the Amiga/ST ports (and obviously converted some of the sprites over in the process). But considering they also did a decent job with Continential Circus, I can't help but wonder what kind of restricted timeline they were on to get it out the door, which is why they ported those Spectrum routines and made a mess of it. Double Dragon is honestly a sad, sad case - it only came out in the last few years it was a 6 week rush job by some darn talented coders (Ash & Dave, who wisely asked to not be credited). It's trash, but you gotta feel for 'em when the deck is stacked against them so much. On the upside, the title tune is decent, but when you've got access to Maniacs of Noise, that shouldn't be a surprise...

I’m surprised that anyone attempted to bring STUN Runner to the home computers. It just wasn’t possible to work out. The Atari Lynx, of course, has its excellent translation by D. Scott Williamson, who also wrote the Lynx versions of Roadblasters and Toki. Even then, the Lynx faked the visuals with 2D sprites instead of polygons. That said, it’s highly impressive for its time and leagues ahead of any system from 1991.

I was UTTERLY devestated when I loaded SF1 up on my Atari ST at the time, after seeing the screenshots of the ST version in the mags and back of the ZX Spectrum box, I sold my spectrum and saved up for my ST (later sold for an Amiga which I still have) to have what I thought was almost arcade perfect looking version of a game I utterly loved in the arcades,...we had the 6-button version in our arcades,...I was shocked to see what was playing in front of my eyes,...I was looking round to see if someone was having a huge joke on me, but nope they wern't, I very quickly realised once again U.S. Gold screwed us kids out of our money by coughing up an utterly crud conversion via Tiertex. I'm sure there are a few interesting de-licensed games to mention.

I knew about C64 Simpson’s but not Amiga Ninja Gaiden. Regarding your speculation on why the C64 port of Chase HQ was so bad, I wouldn’t have thought it was due to diminishing interest in the C64 from Ocean at the time, since it was no less supported than other platform (with notable games such as Batman the Movie and Midnight Resistance). I think it’s more a case of there being more focus on the Z80 ports (especially as they were better at 3D than the C64) and the poor old 64 was an afterthought and basically got sloppy seconds (or thirds in this case). Either way, it was an insulting port.

Outrun came packed in with my Atari ST. It wasn't until I played the arcade version that I realized how pants the port was. That being said, there's a home brewer currently doing a mod / fix for the ST port which uses overhauled and faster graphics routines via the STE's blitter and the original arcade assets. I'm fairly certain the lack of Simpsons arcade ports on the consoles was indeed a licensing issue. The Simpsons Arcade on C64 reminds me that Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles The Arcade Game got late ports to the Amstrad CPC and Spectrum, and that both versions wiped the floor with the Amiga, Atari ST and PC DOS versions, even though you might think those 16-bit systems could have (and should have) been technically capable of easily translating the arcade version. I had the Amiga versions of Double Dragon & Outrun.. I was disappointed they apparently weren’t the best versions but I still played them for whatever reason.. Agreed Frank Bruno deserved a better game even though he didn’t win the heavyweight championship until the 90’s..

I'm so sorry for you for having to experience these (except the simpons arcade game port)
