I think using pliers to adjust the pins is not a good idea. You will damage it with marks on it.

Just put some felt around the pin or something

You are correct - using pliers will damage the pin. We technicians have special tools for doing this any other tasks, and would honestly rather you call than attempt most of this on your own. It is very easy to damage the piano, even making seemingly harmless adjustments.
