I like Affinity much better than I ever did Illustrator, and I used Illustrator off and on for over a decade. I never liked using Illustrator. I liked Photoshop, but not Illustrator. But Affinity I picked up really quickly. I canceled my Adobe membership over a year ago and haven’t looked back once.

I only recently bought affinity, and I already love it so much that I'm totally ready to give up illustrator. A month ago, I would have scoffed if someone told me something came close to illustrator capability (let alone cost less). Image trace, offset path, and the shape builder are really the main drawbacks, but not showstoppers - won't be long till these are developed I'm sure!

I used both Illustrator and Affinity. Though I am still learning all the Affinity`s fratures, I must say it`s very very easy to understand. I am achieving a better result from Affinity. It`s just my favorite one, for sure. And the bonus of not having to pay a subscription it`s even better, mainly because I am still a beginner and paying a subscription just for learning, it`s such a pressure!

When you're learning is probably one of the best reasons to have a subscription model. Think about it. If you needed to learn a piece of software that costs $1000.00 (That's what Photoshop Extended cost before the subscription), you could pay $10.00 per month while learning it, or $1000.00 up front. You might decide after a month that you don't want to pursue this software any further but now you've paid $1000.00. With the subscription, you would have paid 10 dollars. I'm not defending the subscription. I don't like it either, but I am paying $50.00 per month for a piece of software that I am learning, and I was paying $100.00 per month for another one that I eventually decided to no longer pursue.

@@KuttyJoe you can try affinity for 2 weeks.that's plenty enough time to know if the lifetime value of $50 is worth it to compare to a leased product which you wont be able to use once you stopped being a subscriber.

@@KuttyJoe the premise of your argument is flawed not the comparison i made. They are both used for what again?if one particular project or a job can be achieved by either of the competing products( granted that you are fully aware that they CAN'T be both perfectly the same in features and price points) then what made them so different?the OP is a proof when she said she can get things done much better in designer than ai.

I used to use Affinity, but then switched to Illustrator. The shape builder is make or break for me. If AD added it, I'd be happy to take another look at them. They also need to add plug-in support. Asute Graphics' plugins are must-haves for Illustrator and really make a big difference. It's a shame AD doesn't allow plugins.

I teach AI courses for PhD students for 7 years now and also prepared a course for AD 2 years ago. Unfortunately there are still many things not possible with AD or much harder to do than they are in Illustrator due to missing features. Expanding objects and merging or subtracting shapes also leads to strange results in AD sometimes. For its price, however, AD is great, even offering bitmap editing in one package. For many students there is also no contest because they cannot afford AI. Still for me personally, if I create an Illustration for a client, almost always will I use AI.

Yep. I'll trade some inconveniences for higher performance, speed, and functionality in key areas for a one-time only cost. With the addition of Publisher to the Affinity suite, there is no need to use Adobe ever again. Especially since, for the most part, Affinity programs can import my Illustrator and InDesign projects without problems. Overall my experience was a series of delighted astonishment at what Affinity Designer can do, tempered by an occasional "bummer...oh, well."

It's great value software but not an Adobe Illustrator killer for me yet. It doesn't have a shape builder tool - essential for professional logo design - and also lacks a live paint tool or anything similar & no pathfinder equivalent. Serif just throws away it's chances of being an adobe slayer by preferring to concentrate on silly features that are way down the pecking order when it comes to professional industry standard vector graphic creation.

Has anybody a reasonable explanation for Illustrator's need to click that "Preview" checkbox each and every time you use an effect and - naturally - want to see what you're doing? You should expect "Preview" being "on" by default. But it isn't...

@@jhon.vectorize I like challenges like that! Software combat! LOL But I think it would only prove that one person has more skill than the other in one software or the other one. It doesn't prove that the software is better or worse. I think, if you really want to know which is better then you just look at a single workflow or a single tool. So far, Illustrator has won the masking, and assets export. You simply tried to do these things in the way that Affinity Designer does them, which is slow. If you're digging into layers, you're wasting time already. That's why Illustrator makes it so you can do these things without digging into layers. So how about the pen tool, or dealing with text. I say Illustrator is not just better, but extremely better. Illustrator's text features are amazing and so is the pen tool. Affinity Designer is just basic stuff. Unless you will prove me wrong?

Since the last Adobe update Affinity has changed from being an option to being the only way one could work with vectors in a decent way. Look at their forum: all over the world businesses are depending Adobe and now (again) can't do any work over days and weeks! I can't believe illustrator is still seen as industry standard - it's getting slower and buggier with every update they release. Seriously Adobe should refund their customers ... or we should stop paying for those unreliable Adobe products in the first place.
