I picked up Affinity Designer last year, because I took on a new client who hired me to create a ton of web assets (web ads, banners, and templates) and he needed source files in Affinity Designer format. Coming from Photoshop and Illustrator, it was a bit daunting at first not finding some things and having some tools behave differently, but I really ***loved*** the pixel profile for quick edits and don't get me started on the interface profiles and the slicing and exporting workflow! (It runs laps around Adobe's approach and it's so easy to work with that now I hate Adobe's even more than I used to...) I just picked up a copy of your Affinity for Zombies course on Udemy, just to support your work (True fan here, since The Brads web comic. Keep cranking them out and I'll keep buyin' them). I'm sure that I'll pick up some useful info, as well.

Yeah I'm still used to Illustrator because I was taught on it, but I'm not minding needing to take a couple small extra steps to get where I need to in AD. Obviously for designs that go beyond what I just mentioned AI would be better, but for what I do I prefer using AD.

For those of you that never had a chance to play with it, Macromedia/Adobe Fireworks was just like this. You could edit vectors alongside editing images, and the interface was very intuitive to let you work with both at the same time. I've been waiting 6 years for a similar tool since Adobe killed Fireworks. Affinity Designer follows along Firework's footsteps quite nicely. This type of workflow is lighting fast for web graphics. Affinity Designer is great but users have requested many simple features for years now, and these changes have not been implemented yet. One example is offset paths which for me is needed to create logos and mascots. It's a great app, with an affordable price and no subscription, but lacks the necessary features that Illustrator has. This is why Illustrator will be my main software for the work I do. However, with that said, I love the feel and look of Affinity and use it to create more simple things like UI mockups and Icons. If you are just starting out in vector art, this is definitely a great application to choose to help build the fundamental knowledge.

In point 2, in Affinity Designer, we can also select the objects as in AI, simply by touching them, you only must go change that in preferences. I have both apps in my computer, but I prefer Ai for my work. I tell you why: I sell my work on a big free-royalty vectors company, and they want the illustration only in a EPS10 version. Unfortunately, Affinity its not a good EPS exporter. You don't have the option to choose a version of the EPS. It converts gradients and shadows to a embedded images not editable. :-/
@lovemadeinjapan2 жыл бұрын
Or sell it as bitmap. 99% of current Illustrator files are nowhere vector and render in bitmap. Just throw one in InDesign, and you can see most show up as raster image in the linked image list. One hint of transparancy or a single effect make the images turn rasterized.

Hi Brad Colbow, thanks for sharing. Have been using adobe illustrator for decades as a professional, so i decided to try out affinity designer and affinity painter, after spending about an hour on this program i found it to be very basic when it comes to advanced illustration, a lot of tools that are needed in the pipeline of advanced illustrations are not included, the clipping of object within the program can get annoying when it comes to multiple clipping between different element, also the layers panel is also a bit stressful scrolling up and down because i can't easily modify my layout like in illustrator. In illustrator when am working on lots of layers i usually set my layers panel to take the right side of my screen ( having a long list of my path without having to scroll a lot. the color picker is also not time effective and it creates styles which i put back on my shape, that is really not needed. exporting lots of artwork is also a long process. there is no mush different between Affinity Designer and Affinity Painter, the core development of the programs are the same, which is not great ( a professional will ask "what is the different" and not just saying one is pixel base and the other is vector base. digital art using affinity Painter is a headache ( i hate repeated tasks ) and affinity Designer and Painter does not help with repeated task. switching between Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop while working on a project is perfectly fine, because i am getting limitless power from both ends. Overall Affinity Designer and Affinity Painter are easy to use program for people who are looking to create cool arts and not having to spend hours learning the program, both programs, but if you want to create advanced and professional works go for Adobe illustrator and Photoshop, the learning curve is perfectly alright for someone looking to be a pro ( what really makes the learning curve long is the amount of advanced tools, tricks and tips. If you are a professional artist or you love creating your own world and setting things as you like, Affinity is not for you. One major reason, you can't modify your work space to your taste. Loool

1. Illustrator also have advanced color picker settings 2. Affinity can copy and paste style without creating it everytime 3. Both programs has the same select method that can be turn on and off. 4. Illustrator is much faster to work with curve points 5. Shape tool in Affinity isn't very precise if you working with pixel-perfect projects like icons, but still has more options than illustrator. 6. Convert to curve is great if you are using shape tools in Anninity. Expanding the wtroke can give some trouble, creating meassy curve 7. Node tool is better and works faster in Affinity 8. Affinity layer panel i more like advanced masking method. Illustrator is much easier to work with. 9. Affinity has limited effects panel, they are very heavy for RAM and vRAM 10. Designer lacks features thats easly coule be implemented from Photo, but still it is better valanced beten pixel and vector than Illustrator 11. Snap guides is more precise in Affinity and it is a perfect place for UI design - Illustrator is more for DTP 12. Designer has more advanced gradients, and gradnients snapping In my opinion, Affinity will be the new king in few years from now if they would add lacking features like vector bending options and preformance update in windows app.

Hi Brad, great video on what to expect when leaving Adobe Illustrator for Affinity Designer. However, you missed two HUGE points that really should be addressed and with Affinity Designer for iPad being just released, it would be nice to pressure the developers into correcting. Your coverage of the geometry tools missed the fact that there is no “Trim” tool like there is in Illustrator. Trim basically allows for objects to cut other objects without the object, being used to cut, to be deleted. This is was a huge miss in Affinity Designer and lets hope everyone catches on here and emails the developers for an immediate update. The next bit is pretty significant....there is no auto-trace or bitmap/raster to vector conversation. What makes this a significantly strange miss is that in Affinity designer there is the raster or pixel persona/mode. Wouldn’t it make sense to have a way to convert all of these cool drawings you do in pixel persona into vector? What if the cool texture you just added to your Zombie were to be converted to vector, that would be nice, right? Again a really odd miss by Affinity and a point many users should be driving home to the Affinity developers through email. Now that Affinity Designer is on iPad its time that the developers get onto having an auto-trace. Affinitys direct competition on iPad Graphic for iPad is working on a bitmap to vector conversion to be added to their next update. Anyhow actual Trim and Auto-Trace is missing, needs to be added. Start writing emails to these developers to show them this is needed in both Affinity Designer on iPad and Desktop.

I have been a graphic artist since the days of xacto knives, stat cameras and waxing machines. My whole professional workflow since computers came along has been using Adobe products (except for the long period of QuarkXpress dominance in page layout). I just became aware of the Affinity graphics programs and they look like interesting alternatives. The reason I am looking to bail from the Adobe lineup is solely due to their subscription model. They have a "locked in" user base, given the pro-world runs on Adobe products. So what do they do to these loyal customers? They are ream 'em a new one-every month! Sure, big design firms can afford these prices, but for little shops like mine their subscription costs are just one more drain on my income. They are more like a utility company now. Don't pay your bills and your way of making a living is cut off. In regards to feature sets between the individual products I remember when Pshop added non-destructive editing and adjustments. WOW! What a game changer! So what if the Affinity products lack some of the features of their adobe counter parts? Compared to what we were using back when Illustrator 8 and Photoshop 2 were kings of the hill, the Affinity products are feature-packed. I have not left Adobe's CS products.They are still great tools. But I am REALLY turned off by their subscription model. I guess when my beast of a 2012 Mac Pro finally dies I will have to cross that bridge. But until then I will stick with what I paid for and OWN and pocket the extra that would otherwise be going to a giant tech company. Meanwhile, I am going to start messin' around with Affinity's products and see if I can wean myself from the Adobe teats.

It's not super easy to get started, just like Photoshop can be a little confusing at first. But I am very happy with it. For painting you can also use Affinity Design which probably fits even better. (Also half off, so you could get both for $50 total right now).

I am almost 70% through the course on here and its very good, while i have used Vector drawing before, I did learn a lot about Affinity Designer. I would say that Affinity Designer works more like Corel Draw that Illustrator, and I used Corel for a long time, so found Affinity quite easy to convert to.

This video should play that dreamy sound effect that old tv shows used to play when somebody was dreaming. The screen would do this wavy transition as the person woke up from the dream, smiling, and then back to harsh reality. Hey! Heyyyyy!!!! What are you doing over there, Fred, get back to work! That's my best analogy for switching from Adobe Illustrator to Affinity Design. LOL Adobe Illustrator's feature set is as vast as it's price is high. And while I would categorize Affinity Design as being easily worth it's cost, that doesn't make it something that can compete with Adobe Illustrator. But for people who have a very narrow use case, Affinity Designer is probably a wonderfully, liberating piece of software. For my work, I can't use it for more than 2 minutes before running into a situation where AD can't handle it. The more I use it, the more time I waste. But that's just me and my work. I would say that if you're working in print, AD is a complete non-starter. You can manipulate vectors, but what you do with them after that is where AD will have no answer. I've found that the best case for software like Affinity Designer is as one trick ponies. These little programs do 1 or 2 things really impressively and they're worth their low cost just for those one or two things. Jump in, knock out those things as quickly as possible, then get right back out and into your serious software, Adobe or Corel or whatever. One program I know of though that breaks this 'one-trick pony' pattern is Clip Studio Paint. It's not just a handful of gimmicks that they can list and pretend to be competing with Adobe. Clip Studio Paint is beating Photoshop to death strictly for drawing and digital painting. It's only $49.00 and they always put it on sale for half that. And it's incredibly stable and reliable. You can't beat it for value.

That’s really well said. For what I do Affinity works great but you’re right it doesn’t have all the features a lot of folks need. The only thing I really ever miss is being able to offset paths/strokes.

1: Select the original shape Press cmd-C Select the new shape Press cmd-shit-V or Edit / Paste Style 2: Change the behavior: Preferences / Tools / "Select object when intersects with selection marquee" 3: Actually you can select different nodes within a non rectangular area: Select the shape, use the node tool Draw an irregular area covering different nodes by holding the alt key

Brad Colbow i think it's cool vector software you can get for free. I'm already used it like 2 year and one thing that for sure is lack of compability to another software like Adobe or coreldraw. It can but rather annoying to always convert it to .pdf . This is why i'm trying to learn Adobe illustrator. Just want to share my experience *do you have any recommendations to learn illustrator that easy and interesting?
@pixelmasochist6 жыл бұрын
@@gummi4977 I moved to Affinity Designer from Inkscape. Inkscape is pretty sweet, but really lacks the power and coherence of Affinity Designer. There are a lot of things I can do in Affinity Designer that take a fraction of the time they take in Inkscape, this was why I moved on.

I have been a CorelDraw user since version 2. I found it easier than Illustrator. I've been curious about Infinity for a while. All these tips seem to work the same way Corel does. I'm going to have to take a serious look at Infinity now. Thank you.

regarding selections, for iOS AD, i found a pref setting "select object when intersects selection marquee", that will select a shape when you barely overlap it. (i'm and AI user since the late 80s, and am trying to be as good in AD as i am in AI).

I create a lot of logos and title fonts for my projects. Illustrator has a set of Text Envelope icons that instantly transform the outline of a word into specific shapes, i.e. Inflare, Squeeze, Twist, Arc, etc. This doesn't seem possible in Designer without first creating a shape and then applying it to the words. In CorelDraw, I have a page of shapes that I can bring up, copy and paste into my document until I'm done with it. Is this my only option in Designer?

Loving that Adobe has serious suite competition. Hopefully it will force them to release cheaper stripped down CC packages like just Illustrator & Photoshop together that’s cheaper than them individually together. I got really excited about skipping Adobe and going with Affinity, but I’m just used to Illustrators details. So called “little things” are huge to me. (I trained in this stuff back in the day, but left that career path. Now “returning” as a side hustle) I don’t even want to begin researching or predicting the parts of colour/file mgmt/exporting/sharing that might trip me up using a new program/suite. I got so excited, but I think maybe now I’d just rather use old non-cloud versions of Adobe software until the day I earn enough in a graphics side hustle to claim adobe on tax.

Also I think Affinity will be an easier uptake for brand new designers who learn it first, or pro designers like this guy who can get used to moulding his flow and have superior knowledge to come up with work arounds/adaptations to any hurdle plus take advantage of the different but beneficial features of Affinity. Maybe that take up will drag middle of the road knowledge holders kinda like me along into the switch if adobe doesn’t offer alternative price structures and Affinity grows to become impossible to ignore.

Hi, Awesome video !!!! new subscriber here. I jusst bought this software last week and I love it. Im an amateur on this field. I am not familiar with illustrator either. But I bought this to create designs for tshirts. I hope to learn this software up and down and not only use it for that purpose. I saw that you can use it for E-commerce as-well. a lot to learn. Cheers

0:35 Not true about Illustrator's eyedropper. If you double click the tool, you have a full set of sampling options, including turning off object styles, fill, stroke, etc.
@karljolley83465 жыл бұрын
nice job describing, ah but add; gradients also click to add a color point,, big point missing is the fluid interaction between Designer and Photo, with both open you can edit the file back and forth between them, almost like it was one program, iow the bitmap stuff in Designer is for quick simple stuff, hit Menu - Edit in Photo = get technical with it.

The number one thing to know is that is you work in print or 3D (where you have to export .ai files), you can't switch to Affinity. I wish I could!

My last employer had a Xerox Iridesse I designed for frequently - always had to switch back to AI to do the 6 color designs due to the difference between how AI and Designer handles layers which are super sensitive to design for the Iridesse with. I feel your pain. Now that I have moved on work-wise, I no longer need AI. I definitely love Affinity Designer more than AI and I used AI for about a decade before. Super impressed with it!
