If I need 27,156 gallons of water to irrigate (1") for one acre of blackberries, and my well produces 10 gallons of water per minute, it will take a little over forty-five hours to irrigate just ONE acre. Wow. That's a sobering number. That's good to know. In some areas here in central Virginia, you might drill 1,000 feet down and not get one gallon per minute. Meanwhile, your neighbor 100 yards away might have to cap his well because it's gushing 80 gallons. I've seen it happen to a client of ours in 2006. That 1,000'-one-gallon-well cost him $30,000. One hundred yards away, two wells were drilled that gave 80 and 100 gallons, respectively. Ouch. By the way, I love your videos. Can't thank you enough for all the information I've gained from them. My wife shakes her head with all my blackberry talk.

Thank you so much for this! Who knew my little Blackberry plant could be so complex! Well worth the brain cells! Can you recommend other berries to grow with blackberries so I can have berries all spring & summer?

Hopefully you see this, im in a Zone 9B in Arizone, planted a PA Freedom last year, it put out lots of canes, Question, should i prune off all or most or none of last years growth?, as its late Feb. and seeing new laterals on last years csnes coming ng to life., no new Prima canes , yet. Still in the learning stage, will buy a few more low chill varieties, we get 200-300 cill hours.

Hello, you can leave the canes that are now starting to leaf out and they will fruit a few months from now, then you will get a second crop on the new primocanes later in summer/ fall. We have a pruning video for primocane fruiting blackberry coming soon! Stay tuned! PA Freedom is a great choice for your amount of chill hours

That berry that you showed at this beginning was just like what most of my berries looked like last year. What exactly caused that?
@ARfruitveg

This interesting looking berry is the result of several things, most likely there was some poor pollination that resulted in the small drupelets and some heat/ sun damage that resulted in the tan and red drupelets

I have been growing Prime Ark Freedom for 4 years . This year the early flowers opened with a black ovary and thus produce no fruit. We have had no frost for 3 weeks and currently (March 14) only about 1/2 the flowers are normal. Do you have an idea of the cause of this? And is there a well established cold tolerance for flower bud development up through petal drop? Thanks for any help.

Great question, the current understanding is that all stages of the bloom (closed flower bud to open bloom) can experience cold damage at 27 F. A black ovary is most characteristic of cold damage. I suspect that you may have had some cold temperatures when the buds were still closed that resulted in the damage.

@@ARfruitveg Thanks for the info. Next year I will put in a min/max temperature station with regular photos so as to correlate temperature, bud state and damage. Freedom is very early, even for South Mississippi. Thanks for the educational videos: they are a great help.
