I bought mine about 10 years ago too and it is the best machine I've ever owned and I've owned a few. So well built, user friendly, easy to clean and fmq is a dream on it. I've sewn all kinds of fabric on it and never had an issue. I had to add a couple of extra lights to my machine so I could see better. I would also highly recomend a Juki to anyone considering looking for a new machine.

I bought a 2000 after my 25 year old Viking (had been a school machine) lost all contact with reality. The Juki intimidated me to no end and after I unboxed it and set it on the table, it sat there for months. I circled it frequently and watched videos and joined user groups. I don't know why I got so 'afraid' of it. I LOVE it for almost all the reasons you mentioned. Thank you for linking to the walking foot that worked for you. I've got it bookmarked. :-) My daughter will inherit this machine. Yes, it’s a reliable tank.

Shelly: Great review of the TL2010Q, thank you. I have been quilting since the late 1970s and purchased my TL2010Q over 10 years ago at the Road to California quilt show. I THOROUGHLY love it and it is my favorite sewing machine EVER. I have had many different sewing machines over the years (I started free motion quilting on my metal Pfaff 1199) but my Juki out performs them all. Yes, I do use “the rabbit speed” and wind multiple bobbins BEFORE I start free motion quilting, and I also consistently clean it after about 6 hours of quilting (even cleaning and oiling are very easy to do). I bought an XL Tutto trolley because I take my Juki wherever I’m going (thankfully I’ve learned to lift it in and out of my car by using my knees, not my back, because she’s a bit heavy). Yes, I love my Juki and again, thank you for sharing your enthusiastic video review.

Hi there…I have the TL QVP 2200 Mini. I use this machine for all my free motion quilting, up to about 80” x 80” in size. I also love the knee lifter, foot thread cutter and after market walking foot. Best purchase. I also have a Bernina but it is stored for the occasional need of a zig zag.

I have the Juki TL QVP18 and LOVE IT!❤ When using the thread cutter it cuts immediately! And I don't need to hold my threads when beginning to sew. No jamming or thread nests, just stick the fabric under the foot and step on the pedal and start sewing. Those two things along with beautiful stitches makes my sewing so enjoyable!

Oh yes, I do love the speed of the thread cutter. But I definitely have to hold the threads at the start of sewing or I'll have a terrible thread nest on the back of my work. Jealous! 😆

I’ve used fabric starters and enders to prevent the nests bc I use the thread cutter but found it’s not necessary. I love my Juki!!

I purchased a Juki quarter inch compensating foot (1/4" Edge Guide Compensating Foot, Juki #A5140E98ZA0) for my Juki, and it is far superior to any quarter inch foot I have ever used. Spot on seams! Sewing Parts Online was my source if you have trouble locating it.

I own the TL18 and love it! I hate to hear you walking foot didn’t work out but I love the one that came with my machine. I’ve never had an issue with it. I also have not had an issue with 1/4” seam foot. I hope that helps anyone that may be a little discouraged from buying a Juki because of that. My machine is a beast and I have never regretted buying it. Although, my suggestion for improvement would be the needle threader. I did get frustrated with it and just manually thread it now.

I've had the Juku HZL F400 since 2008. Love it. I just test drove the TL18 QVP and decided to purchase it for bag making. Picking it up in a few day! Sew excited!

Love mine as well (1 1/2 yrs old). My 2010Q came with the 'scant' quarter foot (as the main foot). I ordered a 'true' quarter inch presser foot (no quide) - you just use the edge. Haven't ever had issues with the walking foot, but agree with others - the placement of the knee lift if smack dab in center and you feel like you're sitting off to the left of the machine when sewing! And YES on the LED adhesive lights - made all the difference!

I have the TL-2000Q and I love it. I purchased a rubber ‘heel’ (Juki product) to stop the pedal from cutting the thread. I’ve had it now for a few years and I’d like to thank you for sharing that Janome feet will fit Juki’s… I have one of those too.

You do have to pay close attention to make sure you get the "right" Janome feet - you need those made for a high shank machine. 👍

I have the TL18 and I chose to buy it for three reasons…all metal construction, 1500 stitches, and the larger throat space…I only bought it 4 years ago but I love it so much ❤ I also bought the sticky stop of led’s and then I got an additional light for my sewing space. It made things much easier to see.

I LOVE my Juki TL18QVP…it has pretty much everything I could want, in a sturdy workhorse, I love how straight it feeds my fabric, and I do have the 1/4” foot with it (I think Juki sells it separately now?) and I do use and love the knee lifter (many years ago I worked in a sewing factory on industrial machines and learned to depend on that feature! It keeps my hands free …similar to the convenience of the foot pedal cutting feature) I like the extra option of raising the presser foot-pressure for really bulky or multiple layers, when I’m making bags with sturdier fabrics! And I agree with all the features you mention Shelley🎉😊

Bought the 2010Q like yours a year ago. Sewing for the last 50-60 yrs. Last machine was a Janome rotary mechanical model that cost me about 1000$ 35 yrs ago! Never serviced and working very hard. I needed a change. That Juki, I'M IN LOVE! PROS: Made a quilt recently and made use of that needle down when stop, the foot cutter and knee lifter. All hands free! Life changing. It NEVER lost its thread with a new seam. The walking foot was working fine. After some practice, the needle threader is working 95% of the time. Beats doing it by eye. The speed regulator is a no brainer, you set it like you want and put the pedal to the max with no worries. My (old) leg mucles are very thankful. CONS: small space to change the bobine thread, needs more lighting. I'm a JUKI girl!

Lighting sucks...sucks the worst of any machine. Bobbin area is tortuous. The knee lift feels a wee bit too far to the right (v. their other machines). But it is a workhorse.

Thank you for this video. I’ve had my Juki tl2010q for several years now and I’ve always wondered why my 1/4” and walking foot are junk. I thought it was just me and I was living with it. I appreciate you posting links to a better 1/4” foot and walking foot. I just got them in the mail today and can’t wait to put binding on a quilt and try the walking foot out. Thank you so much! You’re a lifesaver! PS….I would HIGHLY recommend this machine to anyone contemplating it. Buy it! You won’t be disappointed! The price point is also amazing! This machine is a work horse and I use it for all my machine piecing. (It is a straight stitch only machine.)

I have the BABYLOC version of this machine and it is more or less identical. The beauty of these machines is that you get the semi- industrial features in a portable machine. Being able to t move it anywhere and appreciate its compact size is perfect for someone who needs to travel and have the robust features it provides. I have sewn all my life and owned many machines and it is by far the best purchase I have ever made. I have never not been able to accomplish a wide range of sewing jobs and the reliability is second to none. Worth every penny.

I agree! I also move my machine on and off my sewing table constantly (I have a very small room and often need the worktop for cutting) and appreciate that while it's heavy, it's also small. It's such great value! 👍

I have had my TL 2010 for about 3 years and I love it! I have sewn on Kenmore, Viking, Singer and have 4 Bernina machines but my go to machine is the Juki. Stitch quality is beautiful, knee lift fantastic and I can't live without that thread cutter. I struggle to get a scant 1/4” so I purchased the swing away guide and it works perfectly. I set my first guide at 1/2” and the second guide at 1/4”. Works every time. Sewing on the Juki is just fun!

I started quilting when I retired about 9 years ago. After frustration with another brand I got my Juki TL 2010Q. No problems with the walking foot as long as I clean it or it can leave a soot deposit on fabric. (Juki Junkies has a you tube video on this). My biggest problem is that I simply cannot get the automatic needle threader to work for me-even with instructional videos. Seems to be a problem for others as well. I purchased a Juki 1/4 inch foot.

I used to have a Baby Lock with a thread cutter. It cut the thread just fine, but when I started to sew again, the needle ALWAYS unthreaded itself! The Juki 2200's thread cutter is a marvel of engineering. The threads are sometimes cut to close that I can barely see the ends, but when I start to sew again, the stitch is perfect. Amazing! I, too, bought the Janome walking foot because the one that came with the machine was from the devil.

😮 I am considering a new quilting only machine. A Juki TL is definitely at the top of the list. I’m a bit apprehensive about two things, 1- it’s straight stitch only meaning you definitely need a second machine. 2.- I haven’t had to oil my machines or manually set tensions in decades. I just got my Juki TL2000Qi and was worried about that as well as tension. I came from a brother purchased off of Amazon for less than $200. It was computerized also so this was a big change. I realized I never used the decorative stitching I had on the brother. I had it for 2 years and only used a couple decorative stitches available just to see what they look like. The Juki was the best decision I’ve made as a quilter!

Yeah... I do have an extra machine (for when I need to do a zig zag stitch). There's no way around that for me. And oiling the machine is no trouble at all - it's a simple procedure that's fast, easy, and doesn't make a mess if you use the right tools. Oiling the machine is quite easy. There are super videos on the Juki Junkies KZbin channel that walk you through it. Some folks put little decals by the holes for oil to make it even easier to remember which places to oil. As for the straight-only stitch - I think you’ll find the quality of the stitch so remarkable that you’ll find it’s worthwhile, as Shelley mentioned: I’ve read the straight stitch on most machines is actually a very narrow zig-zag. The Juki stitch is STRAIGHT. So if you use a thread like Aurifil (as Shelley does - low lint and thin but strong) your stitch takes up less space, so your 1/4” seam is more accurate. The tension? I find I don’t need to adjust it often. If I do it’s just a dial. Good luck with your decision!

Thank you for your enthusiastic video in support of your Juki TL series sewing machine. I, too, own one, but mine is the TL 2200QVP Mini that was sold just prior to the TL-18 Haruka being released. Having listened to the things you’d like to see improved upon, I’m curious why you haven’t purchased the Janome HD-9v2 Professional to replace your Juki? It comes with all the improvements you mentioned as being missing on the Juki, but it also comes with a higher price tag - around $1799 on sale. However, that’s comparable to the Juki TL-18 at today’s pricing. When I bought my TL-2200QVP, your TL-2010 was selling for $599 new. I paid $899 for my TL-2200, which now sells for $1499 on sale. I personally prefer the Janome box feed dog system, and the HD9 is quieter in my opinion. But I’m not in a position to invest in a change of machines now or the foreseeable future. I’m happy with my Juki TL machine, and I FMQ king-sized bed quilts on it. 🥰

I have the TL18. I love my machine. Best feature is the after market hinged zipper foot. I would die without it. It makes zippers and topstitching so much better. I agree that the lighting is crappy. I’m on the fence about the walking foot but I rarely use it. Thanks for sharing.

My dislikes: 1. Automatic threader. Out of 8,748 tries and watching 276 videos, I have successfully used the threader 3 times. (I might have exaggerated, but not much.) 2. Auto thread cutter. Works well about half the time. Sometimes when I go to sew again, it pulls the thread out of the needle. Might not be so aggravating if the needle threader worked. However, the pros of this machine far outweigh the negatives for me. I bought it 9 years ago as a retirement present to myself. I’ve made numerous quilts, purses, a diaper bag, and dozens of zipper pouches on it. I learned to sew over 50 years ago and have used a variety of machines. I have never sewn on one I like as well as my Juki 2010. I have never seen a straighter or more perfect stitch. Plus the machine has a lot more metal than plastic, a strong motor - truly a workhorse that will definitely be handed down for generations. Just like I use my grandma’s old White brand machine for the occasional zig zag. 💕

Huge Juki fan here! I have the same machine and I agree with you once you have the thread cutter on the foot pedal there’s no going back! The 2010Q is a workhorse! I also have a Juki DNU-1541 that I used to sew leather with and a Juki DDL 8000A that is also an industrial machine that is just super fun because it’s so fast. Another thing to mention is the price is very reasonable for the quality. My Pfaff that I spent several thousand dollars on is not my favorite machine.

Great video. My cousin and I both bought the same machine as you and had both had a squeaky walking foot. It was so surprising that it happened to both of our machines and the dealer gave us another one and it was the same thing. We ended up getting a generic one (the dealer just gave it to us) and have been using it but I will need to get another one soon so I am glad you mentioned the Janome walking foot.

The Juki walking foot is so interesting - it works perfectly for lots of people, and is complete garbage for lots of OTHER people. You really don't know which result you'll have! I was also very happy to find this Janome walking foot. Expensive, but helpful! 👍

I just purchased a new (2 yr old second hand) TL 2200tvp mini, which is basically this machine with a few extrra accessories (including 1/4" foot) and OMG, it's a gamechanger. I also have a lovely Singer machine, which I will keep for the very odd time I need to zigzag or something, but I'm now hooked on Juki. My main gripe with it is the bobbin - I wish you could see it or it was bigger, but hey, that's nothing.

I'm a quilter and I've had my TL-2010 for 7+ years. I also have a computerized Juki HCL-DX7 which is very nice, but I use the TL most of the time. I agree with almost every point you've made, except that I hate the foot pedal thread cutter, my automatic needle threader has never worked right, and opposite side of the coin, my walking foot works great - I've never had a problem with it and I use it often, especially for quilt bindings. I don't mind pushing the thread cutting button, and I just thread my needle by hand - I've become so used to it that it doesn't bother me at all. I bought a Juki brand aftermarket 1/4" foot and it gives me perfect scant 1/4" seams. Also, like you, I leave the huge extension table on almost all of the time. I love this machine!

I wish juki made a stitch in the ditch foot but the janome foot works well. Thank goodness janome feet can be used on this machine. I don’t have an issue with the walking foot but looks like the janome is a little more compact. May have to look into it. I love the knee lifter! Probably a favorite feature for me. I also love the right compensating foot for binding. Lastly, maintaining the machine is easy! I can tell when it’s time to oil. Enough compartments to open for cleaning. I have the TL18 and it’s my workhorse as well!

I too love my Juki I have the 18qvp mini, which is essentially the same. I, however hate the thread cutter as I almost always cut threads by accident, very annoying! And I hate that walking foot also and as you did, I called to complain and they sent another, that was exactly the same!!! But it sews the most beautiful stitch and all the other things you mentioned. I do wish they made one just like it with a 10 inch throat. And I do miss being able to do the occasional zig zag stitch! Enjoyed listening to your raving review of this incredible machine! I am in the middle of trying to sell a huge Bernina that is so fussy, it drives me mad. When it is gone, I am going to get another Juki TL for my summer home!

I love my Juki TL machines for many of the same reasons you love yours. However, I have trouble with engaging the thread cutter on the foot pedal inadvertently. I finally got a doohickey from Juki Junkies to put on the bottom of pedal to prevent rocking back on the pedal.

@@matantequilting Yes, it blocks it. I had the same problem by inadvertably pressing the bottom of the pedal. My solution was to shift my foot and do it with the toes ( a lot easier that the heal of the foot) , and that motion, rised my leg to activate the knee lift at the same time. After a few, it became automatic.

I have a Bernina 930 which makes it about 40 years old. Yes I am old enough to have bought the previous model brand new, which I lost in a house fire after 27 years. My current one is beginning to not be great and I have been looking at Juki. This evaluation answered a lot of my questions about Juki. The things you have trouble with, the 1/4" foot is the biggest issue. for me as well. Giving up this work horse would be very hard, but the Juki might just do it. Thanks so much for the honest evaluation.

I have a Janome Skyline and as I sew I can feel it pulling to the left and when I service it they say its user problem. Well Ive had it for 8 years and its never changed. I love the idea of being able to sew straight thank you for posting your review. I will be looking into a Juki

Beautiful job making this video. I have the Juki TL18. I would add that you probably didn't need to take your machine in for service, because you were able to oil and clean it yourself for those ten years. It is a machine that needs some oiling.

Your Juki comes with a Scant Quarter inch foot. (the regular foot is a scant quarter) All TL models do. If you need a guide, you can get a seam guide, there are magnetic ones, and ones that attach to the bed with screws. I have 4 Juki machines. Have had them for more than 10 years. I have had zero problems, love them. I have two 2000QI, a serger MO654DE and an HZL400.

Indeed it does come with a scant 1/4" foot, but I could not get a consistent seam allowance when using it. I need the training wheels of a foot with a guide! 🤦 I also have a magnetic guide which is great whenever I'm sewing something other than a 1/4" seam. 👍

Edited to add a question: I’ve never used a machine with an automatic thread cutter, and I have a hard time picturing how there would be enough of a thread tail left in the needle and coming up from the bobbin for it not to get unthreaded when you start sewing again. Clearly they must have solved this issue, do you find that it works fine??

I support you finding (and buying) a machine that brings you joy! As for the thread cutter: many machines have an automatic cutter that leaves a decent-sized thread tail that will easily start sewing again. The Jukiiiiii.... does not. It's notorious for cutting super short thread tails (that in my experience often come unthreaded from the needle). Great question! 🤓

What is missing is a free arm. This feature allows you to easily sew on tubular items like sleeves or pant legs my ~40 years old singer Stylist 834 has it such a useful feature and has a solid zinc diecast frame. I appreciate the Juki is capable of sewing thicker materials and i wish my Singer i got second hand was stronger but it's surprising they don't have a free arm.

Professional tailor/seamstress only use flat-bed industrial machine. So no, you don't need free arm at all, just turned the garment. Free arm just gonna unnecessary stretch your fabric.

I apologize if I misunderstood. I am looking to purchased a Dukie so I am watching the videos. In the beginning, you said you do bags and quilts. In the end when talking about the walking foot, you said it didn’t go through the layers on the quilt. so I’m a little concerned if it won’t go through a quilt layers I sew a lot with jeans and heavier fabric. Now I’m concerned it won’t go through the layers. Thank you in advance for your response.

While my walking foot can't quilt three layers of quilting cotton / batting together without puckers, my regular foot can sew through seven layers of canvas fabric / Soft & Stable / quilting cotton. It's a mystery that I don't understand, but the Juki works really well for super thick layers. 👍

I too have the TL 2010Q and agree the lighting is dreadful. Lucky me though I have no problem with the walking foot. I was very dissapointed though when 13months after purchase the Camshaft split and it died.It had only had light use quilt piecing and had only quilted 3 quilts, so definitely not wear and tear, never been dropped or jammed so no trauma and well maintained. There was no reason for it to fail except that I had joined the faulty Juki club, yes I am not the only one.My retailer and machine mechanic took my case to Juki and even though it was out off warranty (just) they supplied the parts and I had to pay for the labour. So buyer beware as great as they are make sure you pay attention and make sure all is well before your warranty is up.

Yes you can! Juki makes several different free motion feet and an even bigger extension table for that purpose. The Juki Junkies KZbin channel has anything and everything you need to or want to know. (I’m in no way affiliated, I just like to share good info when I have it.)

The Sewing Channel on YT, she has free motion vids using her new Juki machine. Tracy is newer to Juki, she does FM and so those vids might help you. One thing that you can do with free motion easily with these machines is face the machine toward you, meaning the machine is turned with the front toward you, instead of sideways in the normal position. (I am a longarmer, so don't use mine this way, but used to). These machines are great for free motion.

What needle & thread combinations do you use on the Juki 2010Q. In bag making I always have trouble sewing the heavier straps. I am considering the Juki TL machines which I hope have the power to handle say Tex 70 thread. What do you use and you're recommendations?

Hi! I use cotton thread (50wt) when piecing quilts with a size 80 needle. When I'm sewing thicker layers (like in bag making), I use a size 90 needle with the same thread. I'm not familiar with the Tex system, but I recall that Juki Junkies posted something about this (including a thread / needle combo chart) in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kIabYWyGaJqpY9U . Questions about the Janome 1/4" foot. Is Janome a low shank and Juki a high shank? How does that Janome 1/4" foot fit on my juki TL?

Yes, and the thread cutter is fantastic for paper piecers! I once took my previous Juki (now serving another quilter faithfully) in to a shop to get the thread cutter replaced. Some busybody in the shop told me I shouldn’t bother fixing it because, “You don’t need a thread cutter!” Actually, madam, I do!

I have a TL98 and will hopefully upgrade to 2010 for speed control soon. Could you possibly advise which Janome quarter inch foot you bought? I have to fiddle about with guides and to have a scant quarter foot would be so great! It took me quite a while to fall in love with my Juki and I had to get a friend to fiddle with the bobbin tension because I could not get it right.

Hi …loved your video ….i too have the Juki 2010…I agree it’s a power house….but I’ve had some issues with the automatic thread cutter…which for me can be a deal breaker. I’ve used thus feature from the machine itself..little scissor button…it causes jamming in my machine…Very fruststing…so I’ve just stopped using that feature…disappointing but no longer have jamming! Just thought about your comments..maybe I will try using the peddle to cut my threads…hoping this works! Also what type of thread do you prefer? I’ve been told to ONLY use Glide thread (Juki Junkies)which is an embroidery thread in both the bobbin and top. I’ve been using that but not always do I want a shinny decorative thread. I Would appreciate your thoughts on thread recommendations….i sew on many different machines…teaching the craft as well…but this machine is new to me and I’m a bit confused by a few things…thread choice…cutter…and also the extra lift…which everyone seems to brag about…is it normal that I can just use the extra lift when my knee lift is engaged? Without the knee lift..I can barely get anything slightly thicker under the foot? Would really appreciate some input on these issues…getting a bit frustrated….happy sewing to you!🩷

I'm sorry to hear that your thread cutter is giving you trouble - that sounds super frustrating! Have you contacted your dealer about the issue? I use Aurifil 50 wt cotton thread in my Juki and have never had any issues with it (or any type of thread I've used). As far as I know, the Juki TL series doesn't have an extra high foot lift (at least mine doesn't). My Janome does have this feature which is really nice for bag making, but I tend to make all my bags with my Juki (and just shove the layers under the foot). Happy sewing!

I think it’s normal to only get extra lift with the knee lifter. My Janome is the same. And, if you bought your machine from Juki Junkies, I read yesterday that they test every machine before sending it out and set it for Glide - so if you are using different, you’ll have to adjust tension. [currently researching this machine and am very type A so I’ve read a lot of things in the last two days] 😂

That is how I ended up with TWO jukis! LOL. I got it to use on a quilt frame, loved it so much I bought a second one to sew with. (Now I have a normal large HandiQuilter longarm with computer/prostitcher and sew with one of my two TL's every week.) The 2000QI is cheaper, and so unless you need speed control, that might help you afford a second one.

I hate my needle threader and love everything else. It was replaced but still doesn’t work. I have to use a hand threader. My model is the JUKI TL-2020 PE Platinum Edition which is essentially the same model with more feet and is silver. I carry it everywhere.

I despise the foot pedal. It's NOT ergonomically right. After many many hours of sewing on the Juki, I had horrific back pain. It was great until I tried silk chiffon. I"m now going to buy the Bernina. I would never recommend a Juki period. My Singer from 1975 sews better than a Juki. And the two layers were not feeding together. I've heard their box feed thing is over rated. I'm done with it.

Nice machines but I would never buy one that only does a straight stitch or unable to move the needle. Especially for the price
