I got a concussion on the left side of my head recently and it caused me to have temporary aniscoria for about 24 hours. Went to urgent care, doctor barely looked at me or spent a little time asking me questions before sending me to the ER to get a CT for a possible brain bleed. When the ER doctor checked me out he actually took to proper steps and in the end decided I didn’t need at CT because there was no way I could have had a brain bleed from my injury. When I followed up with my pcp she said it’s normal for people to have 1-2mm difference in size of pupils. Just because they are different sizes doesn’t mean someone has had head trauma

Regarding anisocoria. I believe this can be vagus nerve related. I used to come in out of the sun to relative darkness and one pupil would dilate much more than the other. I noticed this and it went on for several years. On the less reactive side I also had a flat affect, darker circle under the eye and lowered palate/ uvula (cf the test in Stanley Rosenberg’s excellent book, Accessing the Healing Power of the Vagus Nerve). Since doing a lot of vagus nerve techniques, the anisocoria and other symptoms have gone away (the circle under the eye is still slightly darker, I’m in my 50s so it may not completely go away). For anyone interested, I highly recommend the book mentioned above!

Hi Doc, my wife has small black spot on the white part (Sclera?) of her eye for years. Then last year, she had a stye and was given antibiotics. then we noticed the dark spot grew into a curved faded brown spot (Like a letter "C"). We had it checked by an opthalmologist, but she wasn't able to give a definitive diagnosis and referred us to a different opthalmologist which is very far to where we live.

I've been a subscriber for several years now and really appreciate the information you provide. I was diagnosed with a macular hole 5+ years ago (which has mostly corrected itself) and have had aura's since I was a teenager due to stress(?) I am getting older now and preparing for retirement. Last time I had my eyes checked they said I had a freckle on my eye which I was already aware of, and they proceeded to schedule me with 3 more visits within the year - not to mention forcing me to purchase 2 pairs of glasses. Yes, they have a scam going where if you buy one pair it will cost you a mortgage payment but if you buy 2 you have an extra pair you don't need and will never use for the same cost. Pardon the rant of a soon to be senior citizen.... As I age it seems like when I go to a doctor (of any kind) I feel more like I'm visiting a slimy used car or vacuum cleaner salesman! They go above and beyond to find any little issue, push any new drug, vaccine, or test they can dream up to extort more money from you and your insurance company. They make every excuse to find a reason to send me to a specialist. I mean I get it. I'm not a youth anymore but for crying out loud I don't make enough money to pay specialist co-pays for every little thing they think might possibly go wrong as I get older. I went to my GP last week for a well check and before I left, he had tried to push me into so many tests, vaccines, etc., that my calendar would be filled for the next 6 months - which coincidentally would be when I would see him again so it would start all over again!!! Many of these tests he had just performed in the past year!!!! What is going on with healthcare in the US? If it was necessary, I would consent, but it seems more and more as if they just want to waste my time and money so every physician within their network will get their equal portion of my money!!!! I've begun to feel as if I'm being fleeced by the US Healthcare System. I'd be willing to bet that if I were in the UK or Canada this would not happen because their healthcare is paid for out of their taxes not out of the citizens pocket on an as needed basis. I would never have imagined when I first started working that at this stage in my life after paying for health insurance since I was a teenager and seldom if ever using it- now that I need it the cost of insurance and healthcare has grown exponentially and all those years of good health and paying out to insurance companies has lined their pockets and I get no breaks now that I'm older!!! It's a rip off because I guarantee that if I were diagnosed with any terminal disease, they would say the same thing they did about my parents...too old and too frail to perform lifesaving procedures--just administer morphine to inhibit respiration and let them die peacefully. I've told my GP over and over again that whatever money I have saved for my retirement they aren't gonna get it. If I do have a terminal illness just administer morphine and let me go to sleep peacefully. He just doesn't seem to get it!!! I didn't work my entire life to hand over my savings to a doctor or hospital!!!! I'm not following in my parents' footsteps by refinancing my home to pay a hospital bill and end up without a home because you can't make the payments for all your doctor & hospital bills. It's not gonna happen to me!!!! When I die, I will die with dignity!!!

Hey thank you for sharing so much of your feelings and experiences. Sorry to hear you felt pressured to buy multiple pairs of glasses. I personally try never to push people, the whole hard sell tactic never felt right with me and is not the reason i went into eye care. My job is to take care of peoples eyes, not to sell glasses. The US healthcare system is ripe with problems. Mostly due to capitalistic business. The Healthcare system is not run by medical professionals, it is run by insurance industries and the people who own the big hospital systems. And they don't care about your health, those industries only care about your money. Even for the healthcare providers, their jobs are put at risk and the industries put increasingly more responsibility and pressure on those providers to see more patients (which they try to call "efficiency" and even charge more or do more testing). Medicine has shifted from being conservative about examination and treatment, to being TEST FOR EVERYTHING, for one reason, because if they miss something in the US, the legal system is very hard and a doctor will lose their license or at least get slapped with a big lawsuit (this is often not the case in other countries), and another reason i think testing is done at a high rate is but because if they do not, the insurance reimbursement for an exam is so low, that their income levels will drop and the clinic may go under. There is a lot more that can be said of this. But again I appreciate you sharing your thoughts and for your continued following of the channel. I hope life is treating you well otherwise.
@UN33kWabb1T2 жыл бұрын
@@DoctorEyeHealth Thanks so much for responding and you are right the healthcare system in the US is a huge problem. I worked at the Corporate HQ of an international retail organization for most of my working life and as purchasing manager we were forbidden to take expensive gifts from vendors because, "Nothing is ever free." The same is true for healthcare services. I know that citizens of other countries pay taxes for the care they receive but those nations are in a much better position to negotiate those costs. As a US citizen I certainly believe that our costs could be better negotiated but because its capitalistic nature our costs are overly inflated. Also, most corporations enter into negotiations with insurance companies by saying this is all we want to pay out per employee now tell me what kind of coverage we can get for that amount. With that type of negotiation style, the only losers are the employees!

Quick question. 57 yo femaile. Had glasses since 3rd grade for nearsightedness. Eyes progressed pretty quickly (like pop bottle thickness). Was told by eye doctor when I was in 8th grade that if I could wear contacts (semi-hard gas perm), it would help my vision from getting worse. Started wearing contacts in 9th grade which seemed to slow down the worsening of my vision. I've been wearing gas perm contacts ever since (a blessing not to have to wear thick glasses!!!). My vision is 12 & 12.5. During Covid, I worked from home & I switched to wearing glasses for convenience sake. Now I'm wondering if that was a mistake. Could switching from gas perm contacts to glasses have worsened my vision? Seems my vision has gotten worse (things aren't near as clear with glasses now). I also noticed that when I look out of my left eye only, things seem to bow to the left a little (imagine looking at anything vertical like vertical blinds, the corner of a wall, the edge of a portrait). Same when I look out of my right eye only (things bow to the right). However, when looking out of both eyes, everything seems to look okay...just not clear. Trying to figure out why of late that is happening. I also have floaters which are really annoying. Both parents and two brothers have had retina issues as well. Was told by eye doctor a year ago that I have the beginnings of cataracts also. Time for new glasses, but I'm thinking I need to see a new doctor that can deal with all of these issues. Any thoughts on the wavy vertical issue?

Hello, doctor! Huge fan! I am 24 yrs old and my right eye is congenitally hyperopic. I even developed 'wandering eye' for my right eye. My local doctors say that it has become "lazy" and that there is no hope for it, so they never prescribed glasses for it (I use glasses for my left eye, which probably has irregular astigmatism, but the main prescription is -1.5 cyl and -0.25 sph). What should I be better doing about my right eye?
@DoctorEyeHealth2 жыл бұрын
Hey thank you for sharing! An eye that is congenitally more hyperopic does carry a risk for developing amblyopia or “lazy eye”. It is sadly not as much of a problem with the eye as it is the poor development of the visual centers of the brain tied to that eye. Depending on how extreme the amblyopia is, your doctor may be right in that there is little that can be done. I wish I could offer more help but I can’t without an examination , best to continue with your local eye doctor. Hope this helps.

I never thought I had to worry about my eyes. No one in my family has had any eye issues. I have ocular hypertension and eye drops for that to keep my pressure down. One drop every night. I see my eye doctor every six months. I was also told that I have vitreous detachment that I had never heard before. Any possible reason for a sudden sharp stabbing pain in the inner corner + first 20% of eyeball, while eyes are closed (upon waking up or before going to sleep)? Lasts a couple of seconds only.
@DoctorEyeHealth2 жыл бұрын
In general, sharp pain in the corner of the eye could be caused by something irritating it, such as an eyelash poking in that area or a foreign body. Some people do sleep with their eyes slightly open - often not even realizing it, leading to exposure and dryness. When people wake up with sharp pain in the eye, eye doctors are often concerned about micro-erosions that can develop on the eye and the eyelid often causes a small tear on the ocular surface when the eyes open in the morning. You should ask a local doctor about it for sure, that way they can look at it and see if there is something going on.

When you examine someone's eyes can you tell if they will have Retina tears or Retina detachment sometime in the near future or later ? What percentage of nearsighted with strong prescription will go on to have Retina tears ? Is it true that if you get on an airplane and fly with a Retina tear or detachment you will go blind ? After someone has had successful laser surgery to repair a Retina tear can they fly or should they continue to avoid flying ? 🤔
@DoctorEyeHealth2 жыл бұрын
Wow these are all such good questions! I may have to make a video just about all of this. During a dilated exam I am usually able to see the retina well enough to see retinal tears or holes. Some people have thinning of the retina which can increase the risk of a tear or detachment and so we educate and watch those areas more closely. The higher the nearsightedness the greater the risk of RD, depending on the study there have been slight variations in the exact percentage, but I usually see it reported around if you are a -1.00 to a -3.00 diopters you are about 3x more likely to have a RD, if you are -3.00 to -6.00 it is about a 9x increased risk and if someone is over -6.00D then they have over a 20x risk factor. Risk for Myopic Degeneration is worse when over -6.0 though, 40x more likely. Air travel is associated with slight eye pressure changes but I have not seen any specific publication linking retinal tear or detachment to air travel, some anecdotal reports but nothing wide studied. The bigger concern is if a gas bubble was placed inside the eye during surgery, that may have more consequence. Ultimately, these are good questions for your eye surgeon or local eye care professional. Hope this helps.

@@DoctorEyeHealth Regarding air travel , If someone is traveling abroad and develops a Retina tear or Retina detachment , and chooses for whatever reason , to wait and have laser surgery when they arrive back home , can/will the person go blind due to any cabin air pressure , eye pressure issues regarding the untreated Retina tear/detachment ? Someone I know traveled abroad and had a Retina tear , elected to have laser surgery at home rather than treat the Retina tear before getting on her flight and returning to her home country . When she returned home she realized she had lost permanent sight in the eye with the Retina tear and was told if she had had the laser surgery before her return air travel her sight most likely would have been preserved . Apparently had something to do with cabin air pressure , eye pressure , and untreated Retina tear . If this is true could you elaborate on why , or could other factors been at play ? Separately , if a person has had 3 Retina tears on one eye and 1 Retina detachment on the other eye 👁 all successfully treated with laser surgery should they avoid air travel in the future or is it not a concern ? If someone is already prone to Retina tears and it happens during air flight what can happen and what should they do , if anything , prior to being able to see an Opthalmologist / Retina Specialist when landing home from air travel ? Thank you very much for your prior reply .

I started to develop anisocoria from having Uvitis (young for it so they are thinking autoimmune related and currently under investigation). Not 100% sure if it was from the Uvitis itself or the constant steroid drops.
@DoctorEyeHealth2 жыл бұрын
Uveitis is a puzzle. It can be very difficult to manage for some people. Just yesterday I had a young woman come in that had a severe case of it. For her, the pupil was in fact stuck to the lens behind the iris, something we call a posterior synechia.

I have a history of frequent styes, probably two or three a year. After my last stye, a chalazion developed above it and it won’t go away. My vision in that eye is quite blurry as well. I saw an eye doctor who said to just wait it out and do warm compresses. I’m so frustrated! Any ideas for me Dr. Allen?

Hi. Can you tell me if there are any symptoms or problems in the eye that could be caused by Sjogren’s?My doctor has been watching me closely for Sjogren’s and I have had lots of floaters in both eyes and flashing at the periphery of my left eye. I just went to a retinal specialist a few weeks ago and they saw nothing like retinal detachment or anything else hugely concerning like that. They did see the floaters but said they could see no reason for the flashes unless it was something coming from my brain (I guess they mean stroke perhaps). I also deal with eye dryness at times and a gritty feeling on the top of my eyes. Have you even seen any of this related to Sjogren’s? Or any other symptoms that stick out for folks with Sjogren’s? I saw your videos about the pineapple and the supplement for floaters btw. Thank you for your content…it is very informative and has given me several things I want to read more about.

Hi I bad a brvo with Macular Edema. I've been getting Eyelea injections and the swelling is under control. I'm still having spots of distortion in the center of my vision. Can you tell me what's causing that and is it reversible with continuous injections or any other treatment? My specialist tells me it's damage from my condition.

I would like to ask about eye lids that are loose. They don't snap back in place when pulled out. What's that?
@DoctorEyeHealth2 жыл бұрын
Well that can happen for a few reasons, but there is a condition called floppy eyelid syndrome that some people have. Otherwise it could also be a sign of just aging and loss of elasticity of the eyelid. Best to ask your doctor what they think. Thanks for the question.

Is it possible to develop dry eye from a stye/chalazion?. I had this about two months ago after it healed I was left with dry eyes and a dryer eye where the stye/chalazion was.
@DoctorEyeHealth2 жыл бұрын
For sure, the stye may have interfered with oil production. There may also be a higher incidence of blepharitis or other factors at play too. Best have a doctor take a look and hopefully they can recommend the next best steps

Hey I was wondering what does it mean when you're seeing a flash of white light in one of your eyes constantly bur it doesn't hurt an what can I do for it?
@DoctorEyeHealth6 ай бұрын
Well there could be multiple causes for the flashing white light, because there are a few serious eye conditions where that can show up, even if it is not painful, it is important to see a local eye doctor to get it checked out.

I have recurrent uveitis (diagnosed mid 1980's) and have had it in both eyes at the same time. Not pleasant. I also eventually became a steroid responder, so I have to take pressure drops as well as the steroid drops. I've been on so many different steroid drops (strength-wise)....treating each eye differently, as a rule. Looking forward to just taking one drop of Lotamax in each eye as a maintenance....if I could just stop getting flareups. I have Crohn's and was recently diagnosed with microscopic colitis. Yippie!! Also have ankylosing spondylitis, amongst a couple other autoimmune issues. Anyway.....after my last uveitis flare in my left eye, and once I could stop the dilation drops, I eventually noticed that the pupil in that eye was a tad larger than my right. I brought it to my ophthalmologist's attention and he agreed. Said he's not worried about it. So, I guess I won't be?!? I also mentioned to him on at lease two occasions that if I move my eyes quickly to the left or right, I sometimes get a VERY sharp pain deep inside my eye. Feels as though I tore something. It stays sore for a few minutes, but eventually goes away. Dr. looked at my eyes, said he didn't see anything, and then he said, "I guess you shouldn't look left or right without turning your head as well." UGH! That was the first time in the 15 years I've been seeing him that he said something I was a tad disappointed with. Usually, he's so good and thorough. But I was never asked to get a brain MRI. He does check on my optic nerve every now and again in his office. He did send me to see a uveitis specialist, but he wants me to go on a biologic and I'm not doing that. I tried 3 different types, and it wasn't good. Felt like I was dying while taking them. I also get random vessel bursts in the eyes (and on my hands or feet) which look just wonderful. I especially get them when the Dr.'s staff checks my eye pressure. Had a perfect red letter "O" in the white of my eye because the person never locked the machine or whatever you call that little table thing you rest your chin and forehead on and it was moving around while she was checking my pressure. I prefer the Dr. to do the pressure. The medical field ain't what it used to be, for sure. Could have been the receptionist checking my pressure. Definitely a newbie I'd never seen there before. I don't like to complain or raise a ruckus, so I grin, bear it, and leave with my 62 year old jaundice looking eyes. Why do the numbing drops have to be yellow? Why not purple or blue? Since the whole Covid catastrophe, I find that my body is highly sensitive to stress and aggravation. I've recently started meditating and practicing present moment awareness. Has helped me a great deal to feel calmer and to trust my own judgement when it comes to my health. Thank you for your very informative channel. All the best!

Hi Dr. Allen I'm not sure if you can answer this but I would appreciate it if you can. I used some old facial exfoliator scrub. It was some I had forgotten to throw away before. It was more liquidy than usual however and I put some on my forehead before I realized that. Some of it dripped down over my eyeball. I opened my eye briefly to grab a kleenex to wipe it off the top the best I could, dampened another one and so forth until I felt it was off. Then I rinsed my eye by dunking it into a cup of water a few times and then I used eyedrops. I don't even know if any got in my eye or not but I am still worried as it was quite liquidy and I shouldn't have opened my eye even briefly because I hear these little microbeads can be dangerous, even one can. The scrub dries your skin out too so that might also hurt my eye. My eye is stinging a little but that could just be from dunking it several times. Please reply. I'm worried mainly because the beads are so small but I hear they can be quite dangerous and cause a problem and I'm worried as I'm not sure but a little of that liquid may have got in. It's Friday night and I don't want to go to the ER if I don't have to but still I'm a little freaked out.
