Several years ago I went to an eye Dr. about my eyes being abnormally red. He said, "you just have very dry eyes". Several years later I've been diagnosed with advanced Sjogren's. I've really lost confidence in the medical community due to numerous similar incorrect diagnoses. I'm glad to see you address Sjogren's here.

@@jamesa6272 They don’t? I don’t know, because I was sent right to an ophthalmologist by my gynecologist when my young, ignorant doctor didn’t know what complex things I had going on. I then started going to ophthalmologists around where I live now that specialize in dry eye. I have to go again, but those doctors are gone. I’m going to have to look up a dry eye specialist eye doctor, I guess! Good luck! Do you have Sjogren’s? It almost killed me!

@@jamesa6272 That is true, but there is a simple reason, most medical practitioners don’t have enough time to spend with the patients, let alone enough time to catch up on the literature. They end up practising all their lives only what they learnt in training while the world of information in the meantime has moved on and left them way behind. Their, almost exclusive, source of information is the regular visits from pharmaceutical reps promoting their brand of new drugs.

Your mention of lagophthalmos describes what I've been experiencing. This sensation after waking up that your eyelids are sticking to my eyeballs has been painful and alarming, after going to an eye doctor they tested for tear production which was found normal, they didn't mention the lagophthalmos or the allergy medication that you did. They acted as though this stickiness really wasn't that big a deal and told me to use more drops and use eye ointment at night which I can't tolerate because of the blurriness. I felt validated after seeing your video and at least have some steps to research now. Thank you!
@pumibel1720
@pumibel1720 2 жыл бұрын
My eye doctor used a stain eyedrop to find the pattern of small corneal holes that form as a result of exposure keratitis. The pattern for lagophthalmos and incomplete blinking is along the bottom of the eyeball near the lower lids. I know this because my ophthalmologist called all of his interns in to see the pattern on my eyes as it was typical of lagophthalmos and poor blinking. It was fun. If you want to find out if your eyes are affected by that, you can ask your doctor to do the tests next time you have an exam. I have to wear a mask and use the dreaded ointment at night, which is a necessary evil if I want to prevent damage to the cornea. The blurriness goes away once you wash your in the morning.
@DawnDavidson
@DawnDavidson 2 жыл бұрын
I have Epithelial Basal Membrane Dystrophy, which means that the top two layers of the eye don’t stick together properly. So with the dry eye thing, I get the eyes sticking to the eyelid overnight, and then I tear my cornea in the morning. (OWWWW!) Fun times. I use a 5% hypertonicity saline ointment (prescribed by my doc, but available OTC) at night pretty religiously. Yes, this means I have blurry vision issues. At first, I resisted the ointment, because I normally would read myself to sleep (for like, my entire life since about age 8!). The answer for me was to switch to audiobooks at night. It was a hard transition, but there are so many good books available via audible and for online download from libraries these days that I have really enjoyed it. Great for keeping myself entertained while doing housework, too. :) So if you are like me, and have had a doc recommend ointment at night, go check out audiobooks! Good luck!

Thank you for educating me. Doctors have blown me off ever since early childhood in the 50's and instead humored me as though I was a hypochondriac yet I never complained about any other health issues. Oil literally oozes heavilly down the sides of my eyes in the evening and the oily film covers my entire lenses at times. The gritty salt on my lenses is getting worse. A supposed Eye Specialist once suggested warm wet compresses but not easy to do away from home where tap water is cold. Restasis didn't work either. My only relief is compresses about eight times per day, I look forward to learning more from your other videos and hopefully I will be armed with the right knowledge for new docs if there is a treatment. I clearly don't blink enough but make serious efforts to consciously do so. Saline drops work for a while but must reapply throughout the day and night. As a Floridian I really miss swimming on the ocean and pools but can't due to the increased pain.

Love your videos, they are super informative! Could you cover the research on how retinoids can cause MGD and hence dry eye syndrome? I am trying to understand if this is the case only for oral retinoids (e.g. oral isotretinoin) or for topical ones applied to the face (but not the eye area). Do topical retinoids get absorbed into the bloodstream and hurt meibomian glands? Also, what about creams marketed for under the eyes which contain retinol or some variant of it (retinyl palmitate and such), as opposed to retinoids? Can they cause MGD? Thanks for your time!

Idk about topicals but oral meds like Accutane absolutely can cause dry eye, even years after. It would definitely be an interesting topic as to whether the topical retinoids might cause problems 🤔.

This was very useful! My doctor says I have the evaporative type. I went to the eye doctor because my vision was blurry and cloudy whether I wore glasses/contacts/neither. I thought I was going blind at an early age and was going to need a seeing eye dog and a white cane! But turns out it was "just" dry eye. I had no idea dry eyes could affect the vision that much.

I appreciate your channel so much. You are an intelligent and trustworthy doctor who explains everything in detail yet it's still very digestible for us viewers. I asked my doctor what caused my dry eyes and he gives vague answers. Ex. Usually it's from wearing contact lenses (But I never tried one); Too much screentime (Why? And if so, what's the recommended duration / limitation I can have?). This video explained it well. Thank you.

For computer use - it is important to have it set up so you look DOWN at the screen. This helps protect your eyes. Also wear blue blocker glasses if your computer set up doesn't have the option to block blue light. Most LED monitors = 400 candle light. And every computer monitor has a brightness adjustment. Click the menu button, choose the little sun icon and lower the brightness leve.

Hey Doctor Eye Health, I have an issue with glare while driving at night. What can I do to reduce this glare? Is AR reflective coating or Crizal lenses going to help me?
@DoctorEyeHealth
@DoctorEyeHealth 3 жыл бұрын
1. If you do not wear glasses or any correction, you may benefit from optical correction. 2. Glasses with high end anti-reflective may help but keeping clean glasses and a clean windshield should help as well. 3. Yellow "driving glasses" usually dont help in my opinion, but I know some people rave about them, something to consider. 4. If you have abnormally large pupils, you may talk to your doctor about some eye drops that can help constrict your pupils which may be used before driving at night. I have patients I have prescribed for and it does help them. Hope that helps!

I've had dry eyes ever since I worked in a hot store room in London, UK. No proper ventilation, and the room temperature was constantly hot from spring well into autumn/fall. The dry eyes also make you notice any irritant in your eyes, like minute amounts of dust etc. And I've been waking up in the mornings lately with a tight feeling on my left eye lid, like it's drooping a bit over the eye ball. The feeling abates soon, but still weird. I've noticed on selfies that one eye lid is indeed a little different from the other one, but that's been like that for a while now.

Great explanation about dry eye disease. I have evaporative dry eye, due to lagophthalmos. When you pointed out, in this video, about evaporative dry eye partially being caused by a failure to blink all the way, that sounded familiar for me, too. So for the rest of the video I've been blinking hard and I'm sure my Meibomian glands are being more productive because of it! You're awesome Dr Allen! Thank you 👁️

@@medhikasingh6327 plenty! Dry eyes doesn't have to do with not being able to produce tears if you're crying. Only with the surface of your eyes getting dried out from not producing a lot of regular tears. If I'm crying I go through a lot of tissues! LOL

@@medhikasingh6327 my tears do fall down with gravity. And if I'm crying I produce tears abundantly. If you have a problem with tear flow it is possible that you have a clogged tear duct. And that could prevent tears from coming out. But I don't personally know about that so sounds like something to talk to an eye doctor about.
