what a beautiful dog Rancho is! And he reminds me in so many ways of my tervueren sheperd "Neska" She almost always walked Off leach, and didnt poop when on leach! Never rolled herself in mud or anything stinky. Also came looking and smelling when i changed my clothes. And the most typical Neska thing was; she chattered her teeth when she welcomes me after i came home. Another typical thing she did was; whenever i cleaned her paws after a muddy walk, she started to clean my ears when i had to bend to her! so lovely! like she said; you take care of me, and i'll take care of you! I took her to training her first year, and after that it was the most well-behaved and easy dog. She never would do anything that wasn't allowed. always looked at me first. She became 12 years, i had to let her sleep due to bladdercancer. miss her so deeply. She was the best dog ever.

We live in Western Australia, and we love your videos! Our 3yo Terv, Gus is our second Belgian. We have had many types of dog throughout our lives, but to me, Turvs are the most intelligent and loving. Just to let you know, Gus also never rolls around on the ground (although he likes sleeping on his back when on his bed). He also loves to "inspect" our shopping when we bring it home. When play-fighting, he bares his teeth (I saw Rancho do this in one of your recent videos), which can surprise some people, but we know it's just doggy bravado! We have 2 grand children, and Gus is marvellous with both of them. He gets so excited when they visit. Thanks for the videos! Rancho looks like a cool dude; I'm sure he and Gus would get on very well. Oh yes - when Gus REALLY wants something, he play-bows, as if he's saying "please" ...

My terveuren, apart from open windows does all of these. When he poops he always goes off to the side of the track on or in long grass or bushes. He also never rolls but sleeps on his back. It's so nice to compare and observe all the Belgians' natural traits. I wouldn't have any other dog. Thank you for sharing Rancho's traits.

Thank you for this video. It helps me to realize my dog is "normal". The One thing my Tervuren does that I haven't seen addressed here is "nursing" on the bed. He does it on our bed, usually at night. He is content and it's like his way of showing contentment. The internet says to let him nurse. He looks adorable. We wouldn't mind the nursing so much if he didn't generate huge amounts of slobber that leaves our bed "yucky". He gets so into it that he bites and starts tearing the bedcover (his POOR mother!). Our solution was to give him his own blanket, which he loves. He nurses and drags it around from room to room. It is absolutely shredded. He is 2 years old now and will hopefully grow out of the ripping and shredding. Anybody else have a Tervuren "nurser"?

Hi, I have a terv too, and here are the thinhs I've got! -When going for a walk, Ryo likes to pull my socks while I'm putting them on, same for the shoes and coat. Feels like a "go faster, I'm excited to go" instruction from him lmao -Can get a bit shepardi when we are walking as a group of people and we spread out a bit too much. Likes to make sure everyone stays together and no one is being left behind. -Always has been a bit skittish (from stuff falling off, loud noises, etc...) -Likes to shred papers too -Drools just like yours (not much, but a lot at times) -Doesnt roll around -Has the personnality of a 3 year old child (and I had to take care of other dogs that are not like that at all)

So lovely to see Rancho again. Interesting to hear all these little facts about him too. The weighing one was funny. Smudge likes paper towels or tissues too, but is still very keen on socks too. For windows, we actually have to make sure we keep them closed if we are not in the room, or Smudge tries to climb out of them. Fortunately she has never managed as it is bound to result in injury - good wisdom from Rancho keeping a safe distance.

Great to see you again! I don't have tervs, but my grandmother did. Cant say they grabbed the jacket/coat, but we usually told the dog to get the leash, so she had a task to do. Never noticed that they acted different in response to particular clothing. I can't remember the tervs behaving different the last part of a walk, but my moms dog certainly behaves the same way as Rancho. The tervs all learned how to open the door, sadly not how to close it though, and they never cared about drafts. The all loved standing in a recliner that right by a window and look out and smell the outside. My grandmothers (consecutive) tervs very very seldom had wear a leash. At night she unlocked the door and said "Go out and do your thing" and they did and came back in. My mums dog usually goes to the end of the leash to do her business, but she does that more readily on a leash than if we let her loose in their garden. The drool. That is just how it is :) I don't remember the tervs rolling in grass or smellier stuff. Neither does my mums dogs. Our friends dogs, they all do it. Neither the tervs nor my moms dog were/are protective of their bellys, they happily roll on their back for some scratches or play. Anyways, great to have you back! Rancho is so handsome!

Hello, Nice to see Rancho again :D My Tervuren (a 2.5 yo female) has a couple of things on the list but she : - Does not drool much - Is pretty far from a shy pooper, actually. My Beagle totally fits your narrative but not her. She could poo right in the middle of nowhere (not even on grass) if she feels like it. - Rolls in grass, snow, frost. Unrelated: I do not know if you would ever consider making a video on the town of Tervuren itself but I genuinely appreciate your channel and I am living there. Let me know if I can be of any help.

He also doesn't roll in things, and I am grateful, too! It is very cute to see other dogs do it. He has a bad back now but he used to only be upside down while on his bed as well. Hi, nice to see a new Rancho post. Our Tervueren Tess does not bite in our clothes, but she too must smell what trousers we wear - she usually gives them a thorough sniff with a usually rather wet nose, so we have to be careful about that when wearing our work or more festive outfits. She also likes to tear apart paper bags, but we often hide treats in the bag so she has no other choice than to rip it apart... Tess too loves to walk off-leash, having to put a leash on is not always welcomed and occasionally she barks. She also barks at us when we take a detour instead of walking to the place where she expects us to play fetch with her ball - which is by far her favourite game. And the shepherd behaviour shows when she's off leash: she walks in front of us mostly, sniffing away, and then she doubles back, circles around us to check everything is ok - and usually trying to sniff my pocket where she knows I'm keeping the ball in, and then she runs forward again... Previously we owned German Shepherds, and we consider their behaviour a little less 'weird' than that of our Tervueren. In house she rarely barks, unless our neighbour opens the door to our common hall. Tess also doesn't roll in grass or mud, our GS's loved that...

Hi! I've got my first dog, a groenendael, in september 2022 and she's now 7 months old. She's still pretty young, and she's just hitting her teenage phase, so it may be possible thar she will not keep doing the things she now do. Anyway, here's what she does: - she grabs my jacket just like rancho does; - she does recognize my pijama, and she's starting to recognize my "work outfit", which she doesn't like, and my "trekking outfit", which she loves. - she does the same thing at the end of a walkù. she starts heeling better, looking me more and being more good in general at the leash (we are still learning how to walk nicely with a leash, she usually needs to be just a couple of steps before me, and in the last days she's starting to be much more stubborn about this) - She is afraid of my house's stair leading in the basement. Just that stair, she's fine with any other stair but that. -Just like Rancho, she doesn't like pooping while leashed as well, she usually waits to be free in the fields/woods to do her business. - She still tears anything to pieces (but not her toys lol). Paper and cardboard are the best toy I guess lmao. - She drools quite a bit when excited (not as much as rancho until now) - She hates car rides. She won't make a sound of disappointment, but she refuses to sit no matter what (even on many hours long trips). I'm glad to hear some suggestion from anyone, as i said she is my first dog and both of us are still learning a lot. I'd like to add that yes I made my researches before getting her, I've talked exstensively with the person who gave me her, and so far i think we are a pretty good match :)

Hi Rancho, nice to hear from you. Belgians do seem to have a lot of idiosyncrasies. I’ve mentioned Grace and here shoe thefts. When it’s time for a walk she’ll follow and stare at me. As soon as she gets back she starts collecting shoes. Thankfully she does not chew them. Yes we often find shredded papers! Abbie hates storms and the discomfort has rubbed off on Grace. They both drool but mainly at the prospect of a treat. The only time they roll seems to be when they’ve found some rabbit droppings in the grass 😜. Abbie hates it when I clear my throat (cough), she’ll leave the room. Go figure! They love to play with cat toy.

Nice to see another video, seems to have been awhile, maybe I've been distracted by other interests. Rancho is a Tervuren, right? I mean from Tervuren parents? Our Rondo is from Malinois parents (Grandfather apparently Finnish champion on security side think), but Rondo looks just like Rancho. ie gorgeous. Funnily Rondo has none of the same habbits as Rancho 😂. Rondo does do the last habbit that Rancho doesn't, ie rolling in the grass. I think Rondo is about 11 or so now, could be his last year, he has a nasty tumour on one of his front legs, its gotten so much bigger in the last year. Anyway he has had a great life. Hugs to Rancho....

Wonderful video. ☺️ Great to see you guys back. My boy is exactly the same except for the excessive drooling on occasion and the fear of draughts. Everything else is the same - paper towel shredding, not wanting to poop while on lead and even not rolling on the grass. I noticed that myself. He never does it. My view is that Belgians are just too classy to roll around. 😂 My Groenendael is exactly the same weight as Rancho and he’s exactly the same with the shopping bags and everything. However, he does have his quirks - at around 10 months of age, he suddenly became afraid of the stairs. I live in a two-storey home. He’s only just now (at 30 months of age) just becoming able on occasion, to tackle the stairs. Request: may we have a grooming video at some stage please? I’ve got the same deshedding brush as you mentioned in a previous video but how do you trim the hocks, ears, etc. My boy seems to have slightly longer hair. 😊🙏🐕🦺🐾

Hi Sandra, you're right, they deifnitely are too classy to roll around :D It's interesting to hear how similar they are. Sorry to hear about your stairs problem, I hope he'll get used to them again soon. Thanks for the suggestion, we might do a video about that, but we're really no experts on grooming. We don't trim the hocks or ears. Rancho's hair is slightly shorter for a show line Terv. I just sometimes have to trim the hair between his paw pads in order to be able to clean his paws easier. :)

(older dog). the youngest puts it everywhere. No problem. eldest hates when the oven goes on. It sometimes makes a loud noise that startles her. so she goes to the bedroom until the thing is off again. saliva problem. sometimes with the oldest. she has had some surgery ,the necessary molars and teeth have been removed. and indeed. shopping bag inspection. they both do that very fanatically. 😉👋👋

I was watching this video thinking "oh my god, not just my dog acts like this". I have a tervueren too, and she pinches my jackets also, but only with her front teeth. At the pants part I was like, wtf maybe it's a belgian thing or what? My girl does the same when I'm putting on different pants 😅. When I take out my sweatpants she smells it first than gets existed and jumps at me. But when I put on my pajama pants she sniffs it, lets out a big sight then leaves me alone 😂. The drooling and the paper tearing also suits her perfectly. And she doesn't roll in the grass either but honesty, I never thought that it could be strange or something. I think this behavior depends on the dog's breed or personality 😊.

Those are cute idiosyncracies. In any case, I guess I'll write a little book about some things that Minion would do in some of those situations. 1) No, but Minion often would pick up her leash and parade it around. If I took too long to get ready, she would start prancing in place and the longer I took, the more forceful the prancing. 2) I didn't wear anything in particular for walks, so she never developed that behavior. Though occasionally if I went outside and didn't let her come, Minion would start to do her "Wail of Despair" and Aibo would soon follow suit. 3) Minion would run ahead and then come back in check in over and over, if off-leash. When she was walking with Aibo, occasionally I would use a split lead that I would attach to the end of the normal lead and Minion would always try to be further ahead than Aibo, or she would drag him around. 4) Minion wasn't really phased by anything, except two things. She took a long time to not get frightened by items with a large surface area moving in her direction such as umbrellas or boxes, etc. This was because as a puppy, she was given a puppy aptitude test and the veterinarian accidentally hit Minion in the face with the umbrella opening test. Additionally, when I first got her and opened her crate, she ran headlong into the pool. She was scared of swimming in water that she couldn't stand up in until she was about 1.5-2 years old. 5) Minion didn't really have a problem with pooping on leash, but she did have this weird thing she did. She learned a more "elegant" version of the doggy in-place shuffle/kick that male dogs tend to do that sprays grass/dirt everywhere. She would stretch out looking like she was doing an upward facing dog yoga pose and gingerly kick out her hind feet one at a time with a little flick at the end looking so proud of herself. 6) Minion wouldn't shred paper, but both Minion and Aibo would play with a plush squeaky toy for a little while until they got bored of it, and would poke their noses at the toy until they located the squeaker and then they would surgically disembowel the toy to remove the squeaker and some of the stuffing. There was one toy (a Booda Tarantula plush squeaky toy) that she totally fell in love with and she treated that one gently and never chewed it up. Aibo got a hold of it at one point and gutted it in front of her before I noticed and could get it away from him. She looked devastated. I immediately went out and bought another though it took her a while for the trauma to subside. 7) Minion would drip/drool a lot. She always seemed to have her mouth open and panted. With a constant slow drip from the end of her tongue. The more excited she got, the more she dripped. I noticed that most photos of Belgians seem to have their mouths open/panting. :) 8) Minion would often come over and do this little front leg hop thing and if I extended my arms out, she would hop up, wrap her front legs around my neck and tuck her hind legs in to be held/cradled under her rump kind of like a toddler. 9) Minion would always greet me first. THEN she would investigate the stuff I brought. Then, if it was interesting/smelled good, she would pretend to be uninterested until I wasn't in sight, during which she would root around in the bags. And 10) Minion never roll around on the ground. As on the other video, she hated to roll over unless she was either in her bed or resting near me for belly rubs. Anyhow, sorry for the novella. And hope to see a lot more Rancho again! :) I'm still waiting on a list for a Terv or possibly Groen. Miss having a dog! :(

My groenendael does some similar things. He drools a lot, especially when he lies down near me when I have to work at home. When he gets up there is always a big wet circle of drool on the carpet. My boy also likes to help me get dressed, he always has his nose in my pants when i'm putting them on, also my shoes. As for toilet habits he goes everywhere with the leash on. It's not uncommon for my boy to do a #2 in the middle of the road or on a sidewalk in front of traffic.

This is sooo funny! We recognise almost everything. Exept for the pooping and the weiging (but that is because we don't have a scale).🙃 -She also gently bites when she is exited to go on walks, -same with the walking clothes, -same for the rolling in the grass. (she does every trick in the book, exept for the "roll over " is a trick I can't make her do). -Also the same with groceries or when I come home after work, she sticks her nose in my backpack. -She does the heeling/ jumping in the beginning of the walk. It's like she's greatful or something. -She seems to like tissue where we cleaned our noses with. 🤭She will fish them masterfully out of our pockets with her long snout if we are not attentive to it.🤣 - Tove has panic attacks with reflcting lights (also a trauma around 6 months) and is a thing we can't "fix" for the time being. She's 3 now. - With her no drooling, BUT she is a very messy drinker. Our kitchen transforms into a pool when she drinks. We all go " OHOH" when we hear her drink. And also not fun when we take her somwhere. (We take an old towel to dry the floor after her). Nice to recognise most of those tings! Nothing better than our fluff best friend!🐶 FUN VID! Hey, i have watched your vid of Rancho and his “Quirks” or “weird Things “ Tervuren are actually a special breed of shepherd My 12 Year old died last januari. There is a lot of behavior very simular and or recognigsible Some things are easy to explain. A Tervueren is still a good working guard-shepherd if well trained. The instinct for keeping the herd (famely) together is also still strong. If the dog thinks you are leaving, instinct Will make him “hold” or “grab” you. You are not suposed to leave the Flickr Eye contact is important because hé is the guard-dog so he must be allert and know where you are. Ripping paper or plastic bottles etc. Is instinct also, its like prey (food) Not rolling in mud etc. Is pure logic. A Tervueren is a shepherd not a hunting or a gun dog. Hunting and gundogs roll in mud or feacies to hide Their own Shell. That is instinct as well. A shepherd doesnt hide, hé wants to make his presence known. Tervueren are very nerveus and sensitieve from nature. Thats how They are designed boy breeding. Tervueren are a beautiful breed , loyal, intelligent, good in a family with children Beautiful fur, they shed a lot, but are very wether proof. because off there nervousenes, they develope almost all of them 1 or more weird. Behavior. My Tervueren (Falco) couldn’t stand when someone sneezed. Only sneezing from our cats and himself were allowed 😊 Consider that behavior and shepherd-instinct had been neglected for sake of looks by breeding since the Tervueren Was not actually in use as a working dog. My apollogies for My English. I am Dutch. And My autocorrect gives me a hard time😅

Interesting :) He doesn't like to do it much either, he does it really quickly in order to be on his feet again asap :D

On walks, after he's peed and pooped, and sniffed and run around a bit, he now comes back to my side and seems happy to walk beside me, without me especially asking for it. I guess they get their yayas out...

All dogs have their idiosyncrasies and sometimes it definitely has to do with the breed.

Thats a Tervuren. Sheepdogs are black. Ive had Tervurens and Sheepdogs for 35 years.. quirks are different but personalties are so similar. Belgians bond w all family members .. not just one. Weve shown Belgians for years and had Champions from Belgian .. do not add a Tervuren, Sheepdog, or Malinois to your family before researching or going to a breeder or show. Theyre awesome in movies .. beautiful .. but they are super intelligent and need lots of exercise. If not trained, etc, they are very bored and can eat your house. If you put time and training in, these are the most protective, funny and loving furbabies you can ever be blessed with.

I finally broke down and invested in a large vet scale. Such a great decision. My mal likes to rip up balled-up paper towels, but doesn’t care about them if they aren’t tightly balled up. My mixed breed rolls in the grass. Mal never does. My mal reacts to sneezes by going to find a toy and then she violently shakes it back and forth while making a kind of growling noise. Even if you just pretend to sneeze, she does it. So funny.
