Hi. i was looking up some information for my son who wanted to do his presentation on my mum's dog, Isha, who looks just like your Rancho and I stumbled upon your instruction video with the 5 questions to ask before getting a Terv. Immediately after that video, this one popped up. I couldn't stop crying for the whole video. You mention you "hope" you gave him a good life.... I think you should never use these words again as it 's so obvious that you DID give him the best life there is! You have been the most caring loving dog parents any dog should have! The love between you and Rancho is so so beautiful... I grew up with a Groenendael, Odin and even after I left the house he was the main reason (sorry, mum and dad) I visited so often. He had pulled me through so many sad times in my teenager years and I couldn't hug anyone like I could hug him until my son was born. I still miss him so much as he was my best friend. They are just the most loving dogs ever. I hope the birth of the twins will comfort you and I can only advise you to get a new puppy before they're born. Some people say they don't want to "replace" their best friend so soon that they need to mourn but the new life doesn't mean you can't keep mourning.... A new puppy will never erase the memories you have of Rancho and Rancho wouldn't want you guys to be so sad especially now you're expecting another new form of life into your lives! He would lick away at you, jump all over you and urge you to be happy again just as he was all the time.... This being said I don't want to minimalise your pain whatsoever. It's the worst thing to lose somebody so close to you, who 's given you so much. Sending you love and healing...

Beautiful dog. I've had 3 tervuerens but have not seen the high energylevel you describe. My cousin owns a malinois....and thats a real energy bomb. As for training; in my experience the tervueren is an easy to train breed. They want to work for you. Mine is a gentle, intelligent lady......and love her to bits😊

I own a Groenendael, and it is wild how completely unprepared I was for her. She is only 1 and a half years old, and she has no off button. Everything she does is at 110%. It's tiring. I've grown to love my little cloud of chaos, but wow, it's definitely been a wild ride so far. I had a border collie, so I thought I'd be okay, but she is different.

We had both. They have not really been used in Belgium as working dogs for a long time. When I was young we had one from a line that was bread from old lines. Shorter hair, shorten snout, just black in his face. It was what we call a fired one, because of her colours. She would never be scared of anything. She would act by herself in a flash when she thought there was danger. My parents sometimes play fought each other to see what the dog would do. She went nuts, barking, not knowing who she should defend. When I was older I had a female who’s father was Belgian show champion. They are still different from those I see in the States. I always heard, don’t know if it is true, the foreign ones were crossed in France with Lassies to get a longer fur. Those I saw on pics do seem to have more hair and longer snouts like Rancho. Anyway, she was more unstable. She was more agressive to other dogs, the rough playing she talks about was worse, she wanted to dominate other dogs and used sneaky methods like playing with a dog and at a moment could change it into a rough play when the other dog was not ready. She would pinch bottoms of people that entered she didn’t know. She was scared of going to the market surrounded by many people, once she knew visitors were welcome she didn’t watched the visitors anymore. She was obedient but of leash, when she saw another dog, 50/50 she listened and came back or went after the dog for rough playing, showing her dominance. Or a Tervueren is faster, or stronger than other dogs of leash. Other dogs can’t stand to bite her neck because of her collar. Here, the collar is more pronounced and thick, not so long as Rancho fe. But females have a different collar than males. I saw the first one attack a person. She jumped up, bit, pulled with her weight for an instance and did it two more times lightning fast before I could catch her. I was young and I and a friend were bragging. He held the leash and I pretended the guy hurt me and my friend couldn’t hold her. Very stupid of me. They are beautiful and gentle but when it is go time they don’t hesitate. Handle them with caution. They look nice but have the heart of a Malinois and the same athletic capabilities under that fur. They are the only Belgian Shepherd not used by police because they are so impulsive. Malinois are broken in their training, a Tervueren you can’t treat them like that. I remember in class I punished the last one by grabbing her collar, not hurting her, just grab and shake a bit and she grabbed my wrist holding it. The trainer explained they need to be handled gently, like Caesar Milan does. Use dog psychology, not force to train them. The worst punishment is to ignore them. They are sensitive.

I have an eight year old Terv. He is always up and about before a walk or a feed. Apart from that he is a sweetheart. He has great dog sense and can make the scene with any other canine. Stan is my favourite of the five Belgian Shepherds I have raised. He has a wide spectrum of reactions to other dogs depending on the moment. He will run from a cantankerous small breed and growl off a larger breed if it gets in his face. Other than that, he's excellent company along with his Groen step sister.

Adopted a dog that appears to be a cross between a long haired German Shepard and Border Collie. Took several weeks to get him brushed out and back to a healthy weight. Looks just like a Turvuren with the long black and brown coat, long black muzzle and Collie ears. Incredibly smart. We sure get comments about how striking he looks.

So sorry, I have felt that pain too. You can be proud you did everything possible to give him a nice life. If you take another one, have a look at breeders in Belgium. They are considered a very healthy breed here but maybe a bit more difficult to raise, a new challenge. One thing I know, a puppy softens the grief and missing him more rapidly. Have you seen the gray coloured ones?

I remember brushing them when they are shedding. We could fill pillows with it. When they are shedding brush them daily. We call these fired literally translated. He has a lot of black, here in Belgium it is mainly their muzzle that is black. The collar is fired. I heard they were interbred sometimes with Lassies to get a longer fur outside Belgium. We never use them as police or service dogs. Of all the Belgian shepherds they are the most impulsive. They bite too quickly and they can’t be trained like Malinois. Their training is rough in Belgium, they need to obey perfectly. A tTervueren doesn’t respond well to fysical corrections. They need a consequent owner who uses his voice and stature to show the dog who is master. It is not a dog for anyone. But if you get it right, they are so loving, loyal. Be aware with kids, learn them to how to treat the dog. If the dog thinks kids should be under him and they do something he thinks is disrespectful to the higher placed, he can react. I don’t know about the Tervueren abroad but here they are dominant dogs. I remember my mother got a Husky from someone. Worst combination with a Tervueren. Each time the Husky did something she considered disrespectful to her or us, she attacked him. She pushed him off the stairs, they fought for real and she bit him in the face. He was always losing badly but many times she got off him after a fight and he got up and challenged her again. The Tervueren was mostly unscathed. They can go so fast into attach mode and are very aggressive when they think it is necessary. We gave the Husky to a family with joggers and he was very happy there. We had that to when we still had an old one and got a puppy. The old one was the boss until she died. She taught the young one who was boss and she was strict. The younger one became stronger but respected her by then as the alpha female.

My family had them, grandfather, father, me until recently we switched to medium pinscher because they are friendlier with cats. I actually live in Tervuren. I never saw one of them get injured. They love roughhousing with other dogs. The last one we had, a girl, never lost a fight. Never injured. She was smart and sneaky. Once my friend brought his Bordeaux dog. It is huge but not so smart. She was playing with him roughly and while they were running next to each other she bit his legs and he fell. He was ok but she was now dominating. My father let her run, we live next to a huge park with woods where it is allowed. Two Doberman’s go after her. Their owners excusing themselves to my father. My father knowing the dog was not worried. The dog was acting like she was scared, little wailing but in the mean time she bit the dogs with fast bites aimed at their legs. They came both back limping and she had nothing, proud she came back. Or they are faster or they are stronger and mostly smarter when they have room to run. Incredible breed. In winter my grandfathers Tervueren dogs slept outside when it was freezing. In summer they lay in the sun sleeping. They act immediately if their master is in danger. My father was a cop and he and a colleague back in the day, they were at our house. Everything is fine until the colleague is talking to my mother waving his walkietalkie in her direction. The dog jumped up immediately pushing the guy over and standing growling above him. It was so fast. We didn’t take males, always females. Those here in Belgium tend to obey one master. Females are more obedient to all family members. Something my father always said. He also said , if the dog tastes blood from a family member they are gone. And even females here try to challenge dominance. I remember one who didn’t want to go outside and my mother pushed her and the dog trapped her wrist causing just little bruising . They need to know who is in charge. Better for them, better for the owner and family. Ours always had long walks off leash here in the park. They loved that. Running up the steep hills in the park, roughhousing with dogs that challenge them. I remember I was walking with them in the fields, an old and a young one. A bigger dog appears also off leash and comes to them. Our young one runs into the field, the old one advances. When she was near the young one came running out the field from a siderammed the other dog off his feet and they both growled over him ready to attack. The dog let them know somehow he surrendered and they came back looking proud and happy. I loved those dogs..But they need a consequent master that is firm and gentle. They don’t respond well to fysical corrections. You have to be a little Cesar Milan with them.

What do you mean if the dog tastes a family members blood they gone? As in dog bites family and get rid of dog or what? I got a Belgian a few months ago and she’s in a training class for the next 3 weeks so I don’t have her right now. 9 months later she goes back for more training. It’s for personal protection and to watch the house when I’m gone

@@TheGunz4u We had them as family dogs and to guard the house. My father from ‘45 said this, if they taste blood from family they cross the line, see the fear, they must be removed from the family. They are very dominant dogs in Belgium. Luckily it never happened. We always took females because the males here usually have but one master. It’s weird you don’t train him/her yourself in a club. That’s the way to bond. I hope the trainer knows a Tervueren.

Oh...💔💔💔 My 💗bleeds for your loss😭 I can' imagine what you've been through...😳 I jaf a Groenendael female for 14 yrs, me an my then fisncee, rescued her. One of our best decisions of our life. She was 15mnths. Lot of work, but omgoodness what a companion. Unfortunately she was run over by a car, a neighbour was not paying attention and drove over her while she was testing outside her guardian 's workshop. She was rushed to the vet, she has broken ribs and punctured lung. Even thoug we had decided to let her go later that summer due to her age, it was 💔wrenching. It's 16yrs ago, and I haven't gotten a new one. She was not breed through a licenced breeder, but she must've had the best genes. And best of all, she was allowed to be a dog, uet a part of our family. Best of luck with your twins, be sure Rancho's watching over you, and I 🤞🤞 and 🙏 you'll let us know wjen another dog comes your way... 🤞🤞It's another Belgian 😘 Sll the best from Arctic Norway 🇳🇴 💗💕💞💖✨🌟✨💖💞💕💗
