Thank you so much for all of your videos. I inherited a hot tub when I bought my current house and have found your videos invaluable in getting me to enjoy my new toy. However, as a person with a couple of chemistry degrees I would like to elaborate on some of the spa chemistry discussions I have heard on your videos. On the topic of alkalinity, the stuff in the bottle is a mixture of two compounds that are closely related. One is a "weak acid" (call it A) and the other is its "conjugate base" (call it B), meaning it loses a hydrogen and replaces it with another ion, probably potassium or sodium. The mixture of A and B and in equilibrium and work in conjunction to act as a buffer to get the water to be at a certain pH. Ideally, the pH up or pH down should be the same chemical as either A or B. Add more B (base) and the pH goes up. This is why your alkalinity changes when you add more A or B....it's because you are adding essentially one element of that mixture. If you add a pH adjuster that is neither A or B then the buffer starts doing its job and resists a change in pH and are probably wasting your time until the pH overcomes the buffer then the buffer is no longer doing its job. That is why it is important to keep your chemicals in the same family. The addition of chlorine or bromine tablets created a gas which sanitizes the spa. This results in leftover ions that will also mess with your alkalinity and pH. The chemistry of the spa is truly fascinating and I'm a little disappointed that the makers don't make the ingredients more easily discoverable.

We turn the temperature down (60 F) during the week when the cost of electricity is 2.5 times as much as on the weekends. Since we only use it on the weekends, we turned the temperature up friday night (104 F) and turn it down sunday night. It takes a while to heat but is ready by Saturday morning. Doing this, the tub does not try to heat during the expensive hours on weekdays.

Still, the principle is the same IF you are on time of day pricing (and day of week) pricing. Don't use armour all, its not good at all. Spend the extra money on 303 if you value your spa cover. Car enthusiasts and those with boats only use 303. After watching this it reminded me to give my spa cover and the spa on the outside a soapy water clean and I shined it all up.with 303. It is Spring in Australia now and time to use it again. We don't use ours over winter but we keep water in it and run the filter twice a day. Turn the heat down as low as it goes and add minimum chemicals as it's fresh water which we dont use over winter.

If you lower your temp when not in use it will Definitely NOT COST MORE :) You must not understand how spas work. The heater/pump is either on or off. Lower temp setting will mean it cycles on less often. And spas don't use energy to COOL the spa :) [Not possible on almost all spas]. But yes, as you said, you will not be happy because it takes too long to heat up and you wont save much.

4:13 This is incorrect. It takes moee electricity to keep the hot tub at a higher temperature vs. a lower temperature for any period of time. Thus, turning the temperature down for any amount of time saves electricity. The lower the temperature and the longer its turned down the more electricity you will save.

most people dont know a lot of these tips when they buy a hot tub - i know i didnt. one of the reasons i sold my hot tub is the amount of work vs the usage. i wasnt using it near enough and honesty its a TON of work - way more work than you realize. there are on-going expenses that are not cheap. chemicals are not cheap and you WILL replace your cover and good ones are very expensive. you mentioned replacing the water every 3 months - thats literally impossible in some locations. in the middle of the winter here there is NO WAY i could replace the water without danger of lines freezing when emptying and refilling. late nov was prob the last water change for me and the next time would be late march/ early apr. and at that point the water becomes chemical laden and its difficult to change the chemistry. chemistry is one of the toughest things to control if you water gets out of balance or if you haven't done a water change in several months. i had a 500+ gallon tub and that takes almost a whole day to do a water change - first you have to empty 500 gallons which doesnt take too long with a good sump pump but if you think you are going to empty it by opening the low point drain, think again. after emptying the spa you have to clean the entire shell. and finally refill 500 gallons which takes HOURS from a hose and finally clean or replace the filters. in your video you are mentions using yours in the summer - my hot tub literally got ZERO use in the summer. we travel and would not be home and honestly when outside temps are in the 90s who wants to be in a HOT tub? so i would completely empty mine, shop vac the jets to remove the water, and cover the entire tub and cover with a plastic tarp and refill in sept. so i wasnt even getting 12 months of usage. i owned a master spa legacy which is a great brand but even with that brand things break as they age. i replaced the heater several times, 1 motor, gave up on fixing the ozone system, and even had to replace the motherboard once. none of these things are ever explained to potential buyers when they are looking at tubs. and as i said, i had a good brand - prob the best. the only upside was i was able to sell it quickly.

Absolutely right. It's literally a law of physics! Heat loss is highest when temperature is highest. Maintaining at a high temp ensures you have to keep replacing that heat energy at a high rate. It's certainly more convenient to keep it high, nobody is questioning that. So you need to make your own choice.

That's a big lie that it takes less electric to maintain a temp than to reheat. The bigger the difference in temperature between the inside of the tub and the outside air the faster you lose heat to the outside and it's exponential off a few degrees. That's the biggest bs I've ever heard and the rumor is far and wide as far as houses go and all. My friend was wondering how my electric bill was 1/3 his. I told him I turn my heat away down when I leave and I turn the temp down a little less than he does because that 2° is an exponential savings because of the big reduction in the rate of heat dissipation. Sorry, but you're wrong there. People that believe this big rumor need to realize it's not the reheating not the fact that they're heating the house too fast when they return. If you have a heat pump unit which is the standard then cranking the heat way up then the actual temperature activates electrical coil heat which uses more electricity than the heat pump. If you turn it up a couple degrees at a time and let it get to that temp and shut off for a while then do a couple more then do it like that your it will use your heat pump only and you will save a lot of money. People need to research how to use their system not spread lies saying they are saving energy by not turning their system off. People need to know the truth. It's fine to turn it off but when you turn it back on do 2° above the actual temp at a time and don't crank it up as soon as it shuts back off and do it slowly if your house is insulated well it will not lose that many degrees unless you're in an extreme climate in which case you're probably using coil heat anyway. Know your heating system and how it works and save big. I have yet to see a hot tub that uses anything except coil heat if yours uses something else let me know but if it's solid coil then less running and energy loss equals less energy. If you think I'm wrong then let me know how and why because I'm extremely curious how you think turning the temp down then back up will use more electric. For that one day it reheats it'll use more but not overall. If it did use more it would defy the laws of science which are only capable with heat pump systems and that's not really creating energy but transferring it from one location to another which hot tubs don't do unless you have some super special hot tub that I've never seen yet out of the hundreds I've seen.
