He understood her weakness of not taking him serious. I had a similar experience with a semi pro on his practise evening in a pub. He was so intent on humiliating me by wiping my pieces out, he didn't notice where I was running to. Against all odds the beer was on him, to the great hilarity of his colleagues. His error though wasn't distraction, but the opposite. Overly focused on taking yet another pawn in a feeding frenzy.

This is why it's a good idea to make sure you know which rules you are playing by before you begin the game. She moved, and took her hand off the piece she moved, but still hadn't hit the clock. Since they hadn't clarified which rule they were using in that situation, she gave him the benefit of the doubt, and let the move stand, even though she realized it was going to cost her the Queen. That turned out to be the difference in the game.

As both a career blunderer and excuse maker, I respect Andrea's reaction after she gave away her queen. She blundered and without hesitation immediately (yet casually) alluded to there being some ambiguity about agreeing to the rules of moving a chess piece and proceeded to "give you my queen" as if she was doing him a favor. When I blunder I usually go with a rapid onset of some medical condition (symptoms always include dizziness, confusion, and the need to lay down somewhere away from the chess board), or I glance at my phone and announce I just received a message that my grandma passed away again or if I'm feeling really lazy I'll just happen to trip in the direction of the chess board and send all the pieces flying. But this, this is some top notch chess PR damage control on her part, bravo. I never thought about portraying my blunder as an act of charity for my opponent. Mockery aside, she appears to be a decent player, she's attractive (not that that's relevant...), and she seems like a kind person so I'm routing for her to obliterate the next child she plays.

Her speaking on her dad gave me flashbacks from when I was a young. My dad would play me at everything backgammon, chess, connect 4, poker, rummy, gin rummy and then give me hell after he won "Who's the master? I'm the master." He made me ultra competitive and ultra logical in my decision making by doing this with me. I learned a strat for Rummy where I could control the entire deck and keep my opponent from setting down cards, And after 20 years since our game days, I played him at Rummy and completely shut him down without him laying down a single set of cards.. I stood up and leaned in.. 'Who's the master? I'm the master." He had the hugest smile. We stayed all up all night talking about things we did behind our parents backs, and he had a very unexpected stroke 2 days later that he died from. I have been so competitive my entire life and refuse to give up on anything. I fail and immediately try to figure out what I did wrong and improve until I win. Seriously, the strat I perfected isn't easy to figure out on your own or pull off, and he got to see what he created before he died. The best night of my life.

Brilliant effort by the kid. He played the first half really well and got a good level position. Then he attacks. Although Andrea blunders her Q at 4:12 she already looks in trouble as she has to guard her c4 Knight, and if Qc7 Ncb5! It seems to me she's just losing a Knight, yet the evaluation bar is equal. Maybe after Na7 she has to play Rxa7 and try to trap the Bishop with b6. But after Nb5 and a4/b3 it looks to me as if White still keeps a material plus. His speed and accuracy of play at the end is tremendous too. Kudos!!

5:25 White queen on the diagonal can check on the 7th rank. The young lady could not possibly have overlooked that. By pointlessly attacking the queen she made the boy find the safest square, which - surprise! - just happened to involve checking the black king and attacking the rook. Also when she separated her rooks and forced him to move his queen, she had to have seen the king-rook fork. (When I play weaker players, I don't always play my hardest. :-)
