I disagree. I don't think it's an emotional decision but actually a logical one. Bride Price is a passover from the time not so long ago when the wife was a posession who went from the father to the husband. So to terminate that tradition is definitely logical. To allow it to happen to make your daughter and her husband happy, is the emotional decision.

That's simply wrong! Bride price is still upheld in many societies to compel young men to be responsible. The bride's family uses it as a tool to ensure their daughter will be cared for (in such societies, the man is the provider).

Yes, it's about taking care of a daughter but if that was simply the case, the money would go to the daughter herself. Bride price is a passover from a time when women were believed not to be able to care for herself, which is why they were practically owned by first their father and then their husbands. You want the daughter taken care of, you teach her to manage money and then give it to her.

You're clinging to theories of yore (which are varied) to oppose the "symbolic gesture" regardless of the fact that no one owns any one and the money is often insignificant. If we stick to your logic, then most marriage ceremonies would be cancelled. The bride should not be at the groom's left because it's a "passover" from the time when the man's right hand had to be free to draw his sword if they were attacked during the ceremony, etc.

Most cultures have this. Before I got married, I also thought the same as Emily's mother, and how I didnt want my parents to "buy" me. During my engagement, I finally understood that it wasnt a "buying your daughter" deal. Because most parents will take it and give it to their daughter, for her own temporary financial stability after she has gotten married. Its for her to save and she has the right to chose who or what she wants to spend it on. Ofcourse, there are some parents who dont and they take it. But in this situation, she could just take it as a respectful gesture then give it to Emily. Not such a big deal.
