I remember being 7 years old and watching the first episode of Mythbusters, they asked for viewer submitting and after begging my mom to help me submit a possible myth to the Mythbusters (at the time my favorite show and still holds a close place in my heart).... my question came from the first Harry Potter movie where Hagrid bends Harry's uncle's shotgun barrel 90° upward.... I was so curious to see what would happen.... so glad they eventually tested it.

The Germans made for Tank destroyer crews because on the Elephant they forgot to put a Bow machine gun on it. They made them in 45 and 90 degree variants. The 90 degree was more popular, but because of the extra rifling and time in the barrel it would cause the bullet to heat up really bad and the bullet would shatter, it resulted in a shotgun effect. Which didn't matter because they were shooting at Russians climbing there Tank trying to pour gasoline down the tank destroyers hatches and then light the thing on fire.

During WWII some Stg-44s were equipped with 45 and 90 degree bends. 90 degree barrels where mounted in some German tanks to shoot soviets off the top of them or close range fire.

Ja, but by accident. It was used primarily in the tank battles of the Eastern German front. Germany made the mistake of not putting a machine gun on top of their Tiger tanks. The Soviets exploited this and started climbing on top of the Tiger tanks to destroy them. The Germans remedied this by using their curved guns. These guns were so made that the bullet, upon the curve, would shatter. This gave the gun a shotgun effect, making it perfect for keeping those pesky Soviet soldiers off the tanks.

Nathan Applegate Minor Correction; it was actually the Ferdinand Tank Destroyer, which used the otherwise usless chassis of the Tiger prototype build by Porsche, repurposed for Tank Destroyers and Self-Propelled Guns when Henschel won the Contract for the Tiger which we know today. Though eventually the Ferdinand was upgraded to the Elefant Tank Destroyer, which did little else but add the missing Coaxial MG.

This would work much better with a smooth bore musket and round ball ammunition. No wonder the bullet tumbles, it's being formed to the contour of the barrel, which is curved. It's probably getting a lot of material stripped off the bullet by the rifling while having to make a hard turn, as well.

Yeah that would definitely be pretty damn hard with a muzzleloader, though in theory you could also do this with a breechloader that just has a smooth barrel and a cartridge with a ball-shaped bullet. Might take a bit more effort, but it would be more likely to be successful I think.

These things were used it ww2 to discourage anyone trying to climb on a armored vehicle. Not much point in a tank if you have to stick your head out to shoot someone, so they had these bent assault rifle attachments that you could stick out from a viewing port and possibly hit someone crawling around on top of the tank or at least get them to jump off.

Yep, this was meant for point blank range so keyholing bullets and such weren't that big of a deal. It was still an unpractical design though and the barrels life plummeted to a couple hundred rounds at most before catastrophic failure

The problem is any curve in the barrel will deform the bullet and make it impossible to fly straight. Curved rifle barrels were actually experimented with during ww2 and found to be virtually useless after only a few rounds.
@Earthenfist
@Earthenfist 7 жыл бұрын
It seems to me that this could be made more effective with specialized ammo- if you had a round bullet instead of a tapered one, the tumble wouldn't affect the penetration as much. Though you might end up getting curving bullets with the spin.

The Krummlauf was a barrel accessory used for the German STG-44 assault rifle at the end of World War II. It was meant to be used as a means to shoot around corners, and shoot from the relative safety of the inside of a tank to fend off enemies who had clambered on. The Krummlauf had a few different variants for different angles of fire, including a 90 degree angle. It even had a periscope system to accurately aim.

Germany did it back in the 1930's with a STG34 Krummlauf . They even placed segmented mirrors along the barrel in three places so they could even use the sights. It curved left.

The issue with the wobbling is due to the rifling in the barrel being crushed together on one side. You have more pressure on the left side of the gun, putting spin on the bullet, than you do on the right.

+WimsicleStranger The Germans developed the curved barrel on the STG-44 in WWII to use on the Eastern front for tank crews. The idea was if Soviet troops got on top of the tank and attempted to drop a grenade or shoot inside, a crewman in the tank could point his STG out the hatch and shoot 360 degrees around without having to come out of the tank. Of course, it didn't work very well and by the time the Germans started developing it, they already had logistical issues and started losing ground in the East.

When did I express support or sympathy for Stalin and Lenin? The USSR was by no means a fun place, but the Nazis tortured and murdered children and the disabled, and everyone in Germany let it happen because of nationalism. Nazi leaders turned eugenics into patriotism, and that should never be excused, nor should the people who reported their neighbors to be sent to their deaths.

I wonder how you measure that barrel length is it just the actual length the distance from the chamber, or is it the forward distance

It makes me laugh when they talk about wheter a .22 LR bullet is "still lethal" or not. It's hardly even reliable to kill people who put it against their temple.

.22 is preferred. it's quiet and can be suppressed to the point you can only hear the slide hitting the end of its rails. you don't know anything

.22LR is actually just as deadly as any other. if you think it will "barely" kill on someone's temple, then you know nothing about guns. plus their are LOTS of different kinds of .22. some doing 4000 feet per second. keep in mind that the 223 used in 90% of AR platforms is just .001 larger than a .22
@takomerp
@takomerp 8 жыл бұрын
I said .22LR, not .223. And yes, a massacre in finland was commited with a .22LR. I'm just saying it's severely underpowered, and that you wouldn't call a sharp stick or a pencil "lethal", even if its wounding potential is probably more or same like most .22LR,

DEATHBYFLYINGCDS Yeah, you can tell they're liberals by the fact that they're worried what they're doing might not be legal. If you're worried about breaking the law before you even break the law, or even have anything to do with the limits of the law, you're probably a liberal.

The US army m3 submachine-gun, also called the grease gun, could be fitted with a 90-degree curved barrel. the idea was for tankers to be able to shoot enemy soldiers off their tank without exposing themselves. The curved barrel on an m3, of course, is much shorter than whatever Jamie and Adam were using.

Fun fact during world war 2 the allies and axis experimented with 90 degree and 45 degree bent barrels to shoot around corners but they didn’t make a lot of them because the barrel need to be replaced a lot and was very unneeded because a regular gun would be much easier to use and less costly
