I like to throw a double fluke rig. I tie about a 1 foot leader on a swivel and a hook. I slide that over my line and then tie on another hook. The fluke in front kind of jumps side to side, when a bass eats the front fluke, the fish will run up the line, and that creates an erratic action on the back fluke. I have doubled up many many times! Great video Matt.

Probably my favourite bait to use. They get bites when most other baits won’t. The two retrieves I use the most are super slow twitching at targets, and more of a regular jerkbait type retrieve. I do at times skitter it across the top of the water from time to time depending on the time of day, or the type of cover I’m around. Thick grass I will either let it sink in holes, or skitter it across. They both work great. I love letting it sink in holes and all of a sudden the line starts peeling. It’s awesome. Lol

I'm having great luck with the hover rigs Matt. We don't have any lakes where I farm in west central Indiana, so I've waded a little creek near us called Mud Pine, which is only 20-30' wide most everywhere. I waded this afternoon for a couple of hours and caught 5 smallies from 1 1/2 to 2 lbs. and about a dozen smaller ones. All on a 3/64 hover rig and a green pumpkin and chartreuse Hula Tickler. The amazing thing was I caught all the fish on a single hover rig and the same Tickler, and I was probably snagged 30 times in addition. That invention of yours is the real deal!

I really like using a fluke-style bait! Caffeine Shad is probably my favorite because of how soft and dense they are. They also skip as good as a wacky rig so they make great baits when teaching someone how to skip. There's just so many ways you can use them and they can even make a great trailer for bladed jigs and other types of baits.

I love a fluke! I love the zoom fluke, zman jerk shadz/streakz,and my go to is the googan dart. Don’t ignore the googan dart. I swear it’s one of the bests. Durability is decent but the big deal for me is the hook slot and the tail. I think the anatomically correct tails are by far the best because it allows the fluke to have more erratic action but when you jerk it and jet the slack back to the bait it will turn around like it’s facing the bass. Sorta like a glide bait

Just got on a killer fluke bite the other day. Got em fired up on the long sweep. Put a 3/16 tungsten nail weight in the throat to keep it down and dipped the tail into some jj's magic. Went through bags. Turned off the electronics, dropped the anchor, and sat on em for 2 hours. One after another after another. Took pics of each one, and ended up with 78. Mostly 3s and 4s. Epic day.

Yeap the sweep & pause as I call it is great on herring lakes, Clarks hill, Russell, Murray. I usually throw it on a belly weighted swimbait hook with screw lock keeper . That was baits last way longer & with weighted hook you can fish it deeper & faster. Which is what they seem to like a lot of the time. Or a double weighted fluke rig also. I'll use 2 different colors or 2 different sizes. Supper flukes, caffeine shads & zmans are my go toos

My confidence bait type. I prefer a Yammamoto D shad on presentations where you are pausing the bait to let it sink. It "swims" and wiggles like a wacky rigged senko when rigged Texas style. Want to: 1. Double your bites? 2. Catch fish behind people on high pressure bodies of water? 3. Fish deeper water faster and more thoroughly? Answer: FREE RIG it! Exact same rigging as shown in the video. 4/0 Texas... with a 1/8 oz. closed eye cylindrical drop shop weight. It's still a reaction bite on the Free rig. As the free rigged D shad sinks the 1/8oz weight separates and the bait sinks rapidly. When the 1/8 weight hits the bottom the D shad stalls and then "swims" or "shimmies" to the bottom. Active fish and suspended fish will follow it down. As they are following when the weight hits the bottom the magic happens. The bait stalls right in their face...it triggers them. 9 times out of 10 you will never feel the bite. They just have it. The bass will hold it and swim with it. Great technique for young or novice anglers. ON behalf of the community: Thanks Matt for another quality technique video.

Matt, do you ever nose-hook your flukes with a CPS spring? I do if weeds aren’t too dense. But in my local ponds I have to T-rig 90% of time due to heavy summer weeds. And great tip on 4/0 hook! I’ve been using 3/0 and missing fish like you mentioned. Will try larger hook and see if it helps.

Feel like retrieves , and casting abilities is two I’ve the most important parts of bass fishing, I’m so bad at walking the big berkley spook type bait . I just can’t make that bait look good enough to get bit. I see you do some of that action with the fluke, it’s a little more irratic though not as smooth as a glide bait, or a spook bait . If you could give me the best tips to help me walk the dog on that spool one day I’d appreciate it. Is there a training wheels set up . Lol

Hey Matt- what reel gear ratio do you find works well for these techniques in a bait caster?

I just noticed that you cast with your right hand then switch to your left for the retrieve. I started doing that recently because of chronic pain in my right arm. I cast much better with my right and just kept the rod on the right side. Wondering if you have similar pain and how you manage it.

Do you happen to know how much line that reel retrieves in per 1 full turn? Im struggling with techniques because my spinning is faster that my baitcaster. I think its about 25 inches of line per turn on my spinning, and half that on my baitcaster. So its definitely a struggle to remember at times

I told this kid to throw a fluke Weightless in this grass patch at my old neighborhood pond. He caught a 7.2 largemouth bass. The kid was so excited and he had his mom there taking pics of him and his fish. He was like, " this is the biggest friggin fish I've ever seen! "

I fish my fluke like I'm playing with the cat. Twitch, pause, twitch, twitch, pause. The fluke needs to dart up and down so it passes across the fish's lateral line and trigger a strike.

I’ve used this type of bait for years, the only problem I ran into has been it twist your line really bad. So I started putting a small swivel around 16 to 20” up the line this stopped the problem.

I fish a fluke on a 6' 8" medium/heavy spinning rod. This allows me to skip the bait up underneath cover or even in open water. I caught my PB skipping a fluke up under a dead tree and letting it sink to the bottom. This was after following two boats who "fished" the same spot.
