These don't work in all cars. For example the Ford Capri had a very long bonnet so the mirror to the car next to you for turning would mean you would hit it.

Took me two views to get it. It’s for parking with car nose towards raised kerb. Watch for the top of the raised kerb to become visible under your wing mirror. He’s put a red bar along the base of the mirror in the video - I didn’t even notice it first time I watched.

@@creamwobbly I always back in to parking spots. You never know when you need to make a quick getaway. Also, I was told by a mechanic friend that in cold weather, it is not great for a cold transmission to go reverse briefly then slam it into drive as most people do.

Correct position is when car passing from behind leaves interior mirror it should be visible in side mirror. Then peripheral vision takes over. If you can see your car in side mirrors they aren’t adjusted outward enough. (42 years driving and no at fault accidents)

Interesting use of rv mirrors, but *never* execute U-turns unnecessarily - rv mirrors may be useful for them, but motorcyclists are prone to be caught in blind spots, which goes for reversing. I know this, being a biker of old. Watch the road signs and take time to maneuver. Thank you.

Last tip, when to turn or change lanes; I find it's better to split the mirror horizontally, so a car in the top half is safe to change, a car in the bottom half is unsafe to carry out the manoeuvre. In the video it seemed using the vertical split that the car would and did move across faster than it would with the horizontal split

I don't agree with your last comment. The speed of a car approaching from behind is an important factor as well, as well as other traffic around. Just a split second rear view is not sufficient to determine if a moving vehicle poses a danger or not.

U Turn from the right lane?? Where I am, a U turn is absolutely illegal if not taken from the left lane. And those mirrors are way too far in. You should be just barely able to see the edge of your rear quarter panel. If I turn when the mirror is aligned with the end of the car next to me I am guaranteed to hit them with my long front end. And don’t forget to check your blind spots!

This is not accurate. Car manufacturers don’t design cars based on these things. Granted yes it is a general example to get you by, but don’t just blindly trust this. Every car is different, figure your own car out.

I always use my door handle as a guide while looking at the side mirror when aligning to curbs. Use my steering wheel to align to the center of the road/predict if a lane is passable. Works everytime. Well, you need to test it out yourself before applying it on busy roads.

I can see his point, but those are not rear view mirrors! They are side view mirrors, if you adjust them to where you see the rear of a car passing you, adjust the side mirrors where they see the front of the car at the same time, you eliminate blind spots. By the time the rear of the passing car is in your side view mirror, you will be able to see the car in your peripheral vision. No blind spots!!!

These tips very much depend upon the car length, its steering lock, the height of the driver, their seat position etc. What works for this guy in that car probably won't work for you. Learn to drive your car not his.

The mirror lane changing method is poor. It does not take account oncoming vehicle speed and you will miss a vehicle in your blind spot. The mirror alignment method is also poor. The NHTSA Blind Zone Glare Elimination method is far superior and removes the blind spot.
