The Westgate Mall commercial reminds me of just how essential malls were to my childhood and teenage years. I particularly remember my dad driving me to big city malls in Chicago during the Thanksgiving weekend to point out things I wanted for Christmas that year. While I understand the convenience of on line shopping, there was something special about that time period.

You’re not kidding about that Doug-like station identifier. I remember seeing it too. It HAS to be a Jim Jenkins produced Doug prototype.

I agree! that's literally his dog porkchop in this bit as well (and how the hell I remembered that off the top of my head I'll never know, lol)

I actually remember seeing that USA Network ID at 9:07 regulary, but hadn't thought about in in decades (literally!), until this video triggerd my memory. Thanks for posting.

9:14 Jim Jenkins did a lot of commercials before Doug was a thing so I'm pretty sure he did make this. The same proto-Doug also appeared in a grapefruit commercial with Lorenzo Music.

The character of Doug actually started in a failed children's book that Jenkins wrote, but never got published. He used the character in a series of commercials, and eventually Nickelodeon bought the character as a cartoon.

GREAT collection of ads! A lot of these I haven't seen in other compilations. I found some of those Elvis plates on eBay for $30. When you account for interest, guess they weren't such a great investment.... Wow I forgot all about Big Mixx. I don't think it lasted long. As someone who likes mixing up cereals, I'd buy that!

I remember a number of the toy and some of the cereal commercials. Interesting seeing them again after 25 years. Brings back memories! Nice seeing the Levitz Furniture commercial! Didn’t know the musical jingle went for a full minute instead of the usual 30 seconds. That oval and the heart always looked sharp! Getting rid of that in part might have contributed to their decline. If possible, might be worth splicing that commercial out on its own clip as there are other Levitz commercials on KZbin. Thanks for the compilation!

I'm pretty sure that i had some of those toys giving to me on Christmas. I remember getting double present because i had to celebrated my birthday on Christmas because my Grandparents would go to Las Vegas for the winter.

You are correct about the USA ID! It was done by Jim Jinkins before his work on the Doug series. splitsider.com/2012/02/you-dont-know-doug/ It was work such as this USA ID that got the attention of Nickelodeon and the opportunity for the series.

The Pooch Patrol commercial is insane. They show that the pooch is nowhere near as scary as the mask, thus undermining their own product.

The voice there is just a standard impression of Ed Wynn (Mad Hatter from "Alice In Wonderland") which has sort of become a stock "cartoon voice" over the years.
@alskndlaskndal7 жыл бұрын
I noticed the similarity too! Certainly not the first or last character to be based on Ed Wynn, but it's interesting that they're both kings of sweet food!
