That was a fun watch, broke it into segments over a few days. As my father used to restore 50's-70's wood and fiberglass boats and collected over 120 outboard motors from 1909-1960 I was familiar with most everything in your vide except color matching gelcoat. Not only had I not seen that done I never knew it was a thing! Very impressive, seeing it done makes total sense and I don't know why I'd never thought it was possible other than in my line of work (I was an auto racing mechanic and small race team owner for 40 years) the bodies on the fiberglass or carbon/carbon-kevlar were always painted so no one bothered to ever match gelcoat when doing repairs. Seeing it done gives me lots of ideas, thanks for that!
@Kings_Wharf_Restoration10 сағат бұрын
Thanks Bryan!! It sounds like both you and your father are interesting men hahah. When it came to colour matching I thought it would be super difficult, but its actually not that bad .First time doing it anyone could get good results! That kit i used in the video was around $500 CAD btw! But like you mention all I ever used to do was fill the holes with filler and repaint the entire boat. Thanks for the watch and long thought out comment Bryan!!

If my dad didn't have that exact boat growing up, it was pretty damn close. I lived 2 miles from the Sacramento River. Great video. You are lucky you have a wife who is into what you do and will help out. My wife helps with nothing I do. Totally opposites. lol. I bought a speed boat to "do up" but I found hte Gelcoat was very absorbant. I thought it needed a polish and I put T-cat on it and it soaked straight through. I used all the parts (seat, steering engine etc) on a second boat I bought (as it was in better condition) and got it up and running. Placed it on ebay and it went for a quarter the price I paid for both speed boats. The first one was a Fletcher Arrow 14ft. I gave that away to a fishing club that could use it to row out and rake all of the weeds in the pond. Nothing on it except the screen and the plywood flooring.

Great job on the restoration. At the start, I didn’t think you’d be able to restore the gel coat. I’m subscribing to see it get out on the water. Looking forward to seeing your Ma behind the wheel. I’m also going to have to go back and watch your other videos. I understand that looks are subjective, but the black and white seems so stark against the pastel green of the hull. I know why you painted the chromed parts, but If I’d done this, I think I’d have used a dark grey everywhere you used black, and a light grey everywhere you used white. That engine is just so bright of a white. But that’s me. I can’t say much, as I’ve only restored one boat, back around ’95. I’m an airplane guy, so I build/restore airplanes to fly. About the same price of a hobby as boating. Both are just money pits. edit: hmmm... My hangar is just about finished being built, and only one airplane project I need to finish this year. Maybe I'll find a boat like this to restore. The airport's right next to a river, so I could keep the boat in my hangar instead of the RV's most guys have in theirs.

Most of the farmers I know aren't really into boating, and most boaters aren't into farming. Maybe that could make my channel more appealing??? Little tip for next time, one layer of woven mat under the wood will give it a thicker bit of resin and help stop water getting in. Also when gluing the boards in talc powder mixed with resin makes a perfect glue. You can get it to the right thickness to hold tight. Awesome job by the way, you don’t see a lot of old glass boats still around.

900 bucks is not too bad if you consider it came with a 60 HP Evinrude and trailer. The VRO (oil injection) can be deleted as it's nothing but trouble and eventually WILL cost you the engine. Pre-mix is the way to go and it should be around 50:1 for these old bangers. I also use zip ties, nothing wrong with them as they don't corrode and are easy to replace (keep a few in the toolbox on your boat + a spare fuel pump and you're golden).
@Kings_Wharf_Restoration43 минут бұрын
Exactly Kalle, I try to get boats that I know ill never lose money on. This is Canadian dollars as well. Same here, every oil injected engine I get, the oil injection is coming off and I'm pre mixing. Whenever I buy a boat and the engine is blown, 90% of the time its an oil injected motor. Someone forgot to put oil in, it or it stopped working. Thanks for taking the time to comment man!
