The better answer is "okay and are you going to be putting that on a tab tonight?" Then they will volunteer thier card or say "no, cash tonight. Thanks", or whatever. At that point you can run a fund verification that will process a small fee and then refund it. Like a lot of gas stations do, or when you verify a new card on PayPal. No hurt feelings, no objectifications or any sense of harrassment by the customer. If the card declines simply bring it back and ask for another, and say "we need the card to open the tab and this one unfortunately is not working right now. Do you have another?" If they rant about how much they have on their card just reply "sir/ma'am, I dont doubt you, its probably an issue with thier fraud protection since it's a large purchase. Would you like to use our phone to call them and clear it up, or do you have a second card youd like to use instead? We can also accept cash, diners club, bitcoin, or human souls" or whatever yall accept as payment.

I worked a high end boutique club years ago. Anything over 45AUD to a guest charge, had to be paid for before poured. Anything charged to a members account was charged from their credit before poured. Never ever faced this issue one this process was installed. And noone had a problem with it. If anything it prompted everyone to join for the membership benefits. For every 1000AUD spent an account got around 120AUD in complementary food.

In case anybody cares, $300 for 100ml, which is two shots, is $2100 per bottle with a shot left, and they retail between 2000-3000, so from the distributor they're probably between 1200-1700, depending on how heavy the allocation is. One of the only prices he's given that wasn't all the way ridiculous

Run the card before the pour. However it may also be a issue with the card issuer blocking the sale so ask them to call their bank or card provider. The sale may have been flagged as a scam so they blocked it for his protection a 10min call could relieve it. If still unable to pay I say use it as a write off as a training exercise have staff taste test against other cognac to see if they can spot the differences and use it to help promote the sale of the liquor in the future as well as help them to inform clients in the future if it’s something they may want to enjoy based on learning the customer’s preferences in alcohol

A bottle of Louis xiii is 2.3k, there are about 24oz in a non USA bottle. Divide 2300 by 24 and that’s 95 dollars per oz. For a 2oz drink it costs the bar 190 dollars per drink making a 63% profit if they sell it for 300 bucks, down right a scam and down right deplorable
