Gyarus have been citing it as part of their influence...this video even shows all the old releases of Egg magazine from two decades ago where Black American celebrities were presented as fashion influences. Any gyaru should mention how this was part of the influence, in addition to other aesthetics and cultures. ✌

“If you weren’t dark skin, you weren’t called Gyaru.” As a black person who’s into Japanese fashion and aesthetics, seeing so many black girls into gyaru getting bullied on TikTok for it was so JARRING. Like… we literally are the blueprint. I wish people ACTUALLY educated themselves on a lot of fashion trends and cultural eras. Thank you guys for shedding light on Gyaru! 🥺❤❤ *EDIT 2* : before y’all even WRITE an unnecessary think piece to me, remember the fact that I am not saying black people *INVENTED* gyaru. 🥴 I’m simply saying there was black influence in gyaru fashion, and there’s nothing wrong with that. That doesn’t mean that there was ONLY black influence (in fact, there was white western influences as well.) EDIT : it’s so funny how I said this and people are gathering in arms to be like “WELLLL… black people didnt REALLYYYY” like let’s be fr 😀 (and look up “B-Kei Gyaru if you don’t believe me 😤) Y’all do not have to either 1) restate my point about the reason behind the tanned skin (I already mentioned this!) or 2) try to discredit black culture being a part of gyaru culture altogether. I personally love the fact that they did that as a means to show that not every Asian fits the pale skin narrative. But I’m not about to have people trying to band together to tell me that AA didn’t have at least SOME PART in a lot of their aesthetics 😂😂. This is the same treatment black girls and women went through when they tried their hand at gyaru fashion online and it’s disgusting. Cut it out if you’re not REALLY trying to educate me further. (Btw, gals don’t do that to black women who join their subculture in Japan from what I’ve heard! 😝💘)

@marshmxllow fluff they didn’t get dark skin and long nails from NOWHERE. Yes, they started the gyaru culture, but even THAT was birthed out of some parts of OUR culture. I said “we are the blueprint” because a lot of eras and movements like these have been created referring back to black culture for a VERY, VERY long time. 😘

I saw this on tiktok but also there was this thing back in the day where different hair tones may signify a divide, which may not cross the mind if you have brown skin. Many girls in the 90s (at least in the west) would dye their hair blonde bc of Brittney, so it is funny to see the same things reflect in gyaru and decora -- trying to look like your idol

i think this has to do with the tradtion aspect of japanese culture wanting white skin so dying the skin dark was still kind of a reason to divide, i think this had to do more with japanese gyaru then actual black gyaru

I appreciate kurogyaru so much. I'm a darker skin asian and I wear gothic fashion and gothic makeup but a lot of asian gothic makeup tutorials are aimed at those with very pale skin so it never works out as well for my skin tone. Then I started looking up makeup tutorials by kurogyaru like egg models, Choppa, Usatani, etc and incorporating kurogyaru makeup into my gothic makeup and it's turning out so much better!

I am a 90’s pastel Kawaii girl!! I am a Kawaii mom too 😋 in the 90’s Hello Kitty had a baby blue theme with Angel wings & baby blue was my fave colour so I was covered head to toe in baby blue & Hello Kitty 🥰💞 Butterflies were a big thing too 🦋 most of my friends were punk & goth or “freak” as we called it then, I was a freak too when I was 14 & 15 till I went pastel Kawaii at 16. Not gonna lie tho nobody (at least in Toronto or Montreal Canada) used the word Kawaii back then, I didn’t know my style was Kawaii till that song/music video came out & I was like omg bish biting my style! 😅 I went more hip hop in the late 90’s early 2000’s but still wore only baby blue with Sanrio accessories & Kawaii vibes. It wasn’t till 2007 when I got pregnant I started wearing pink & other colours & not till I made a KZbin channel in 2009 that I found out there was other people with similar style to mine, I was so surprised!!! I had a friend visit Japan in 2002 & now I know why she said I would love it there!! 😋🦋🎨💘🍭

Loooooved hearing about gyaru from an actual former gyaru’s perspective! I’ve been super into the “first generation” gyaru, like Haruka’s mom, lately. There’s just something so fun and carefree about them and you could tell they looked like they were having a blast. It’s also the nostalgia from living in the late 90s and 2000 for me. I loved how Haruka’s mom was getting more and more bold during the interview, her younger gyaru self was definitely coming through, it was so cute. Even the “older generation vs younger generation” thing came through when she would be like, “Oh, that’s *your* generation, we never did that,” it just made me chuckle because even though I know the style has changed and all, I always forget how much it’s changed, especially the mannerisms and culture around it. Her mom talking about the gyaru lingo was just 🤌 love how you can use it to see who was a real gal and who’s a faker 😆 Also can we talk about the yamanba/manba bombshell they dropped on us?!?! Like, all this time I legit had no idea! Yamanba and manba were the first things I usually thought of when I thought of gyaru, but wow! It makes sense to compare it to like, an emo and scene thing, but dang, I really never thought of it that way! Overall this was absolutely fascinating! I loved hearing about Haruka’s mother and her gyaru life. I’m glad she enjoyed her gyaru lifestyle and is totally cool with Haruka being into the fashion! I hope there can be more interviews like this!

This was SUCH a great interview!!!!! Thanks!!!!! m( _ _ )m As a white (technically latina but) woman who got into gyaru back in the heyday of agejo and hime and popularization of shiro (abt late 00s as a hs student in love with Kana Nishino style lol) but never considered herself a "gaijin gyaru" per se (though I have always incorporated gyaru stuff in my own style !!) it's so interesting to me how our thoughts on gyaru seem to be aligned though we are from different generations and places. Like I would agree that Doja Cat has a "modern gyaru" style (super inspiring too !!) and is more gyaru than Baywatch and yamanba wasn't gyaru (because they had "rules" for makeup and clothes and their intent was different) and so on ... also on sexyness - people seem to associate it with "lewdness" when it should be more like "freedom" . Personally as an asexual person who really likes gyaru I don't think about it in terms of sex appeal at all but rather being cute and fun :) 💖💕 and it did teach me to be more appreciative of my wavy brown hair in ways that, ironically, western media didn't! Just when it was getting good it was cut though so I am hoping for a sequel if Haruka and her mom are up to it haha ~ Make ur mom become a business gyaru next time Haruka lol Best regards ~

I'm Canadian, in my 40s, and I was always interested in gyaru and other alternative J-fashion styles (as an observer) back in the early 2000s - so this was super fascinating for me to watch! Thanks so much for posting it. It is interesting to me that チョベリグ was originally a gyaru slang term. I've actually said that to people, mostly to be funny, for decades now. I read it in a magazine back in the 90s - I think it was Seventeen magazine. They claimed it was something "young cool kids in Japan" said. They never mentioned anything about gyaru or any kind of subculture. I didn't find out about that until several years later. I was really into anything about Japan (still am) so I picked it up and never really stopped saying it. 😂

I love her mom- she was so ...carefree with her words, so unpretentious, so uninhibited and honest and NOT pc...it's SOOOOO refreshing to watch in this pc culture. I loved hearing her talk about her adolescence. I also saw such a difference between their interpretations of it all, for example when the mama was discussing being a ''poseur'' or not a real gyaru, she was mostly referring to the actual LIFESTYLE i.e. if you were truly a gyaru in her time then you'd be around other gyarus and you'd naturally pick up on the slang and lingo and if someone claimed they were a gyaru yet couldn't understand gyarus speaking, it'd be indicative of a fib right? Made sense to me completely..yet the daughter immediately focused on just the surface level aspect of it all...the clothing. So if someone doesn't get the ''outfit'' down ''right'' (whatever that means) then that means you're not 'cool' or with the group...as she put it. it's how genZ views everything...on the very surface level of things. They see these communities of cultural sub-categories and only see the outfits, the outer aesthetic and think that copying it shoe for shoe, hair clip for hair clip, will make them be part of that culture...when in reality it is SO much more than just the clothing. It's not some costume that you just put on and take off whenever you wish; if you are genuinely part of this culture then it's not a costume, it's your chosen way of dressing..it's your STYLE and your way of life. I found that juxtaposition between the two interpretations to be telling. Just wanted to share my two cents. The mama interview has been my favorite out of all of the ones I've seen thus far...not even close to the others. Great job mama haruka!✌✌✌

Informative video and interesting trend. I remember seeing this online in the early 2000s but it barely registered a blip here in the US at the time unless you sought out information.

I've always been so interested in gyaru culture, however I feel like I constantly don't know enough to call myself gyaru. Also I am very emo alt in the way I wear a lot of black and white, which I guess is most similar to rokku gyaru, but then it still technically is more scemo so I'm so confused.
