I like both eras but I do feel like there's something extra from the 90s that provides a more timeless experience

imo modern shoegaze bands have to be pretty unique for me to really attach to them and remember their sound. I like most if not all shoegaze with good production but I like bands that implement unique elements that make them stand out

I was also thinking Belong would be a great addition to this. Such a unique sound but so dreamy and noisy. Love your videos. Also Jesu is a different vibe totally but some cross over, like doom-gaze

I kind of remember in the mid aughts the new bands I was excited about were Radio Dept, Asobi Sesku, Airiel, Pia Fraus, Electro Group. also 7:07 the first Hatchie EP from 2018 sounds very very much like late cocteau twins

I’m a Gen X’er and saw MBV live on the Loveless tour back in the day, so I gotta go with the late 80’s/ early 90’s. Still though, big love for the newer stuff as well, but not all of it.

Love all these bands so much. Astrobrite Crush is an all time favorite.

I grew up listening to Chapterhouse, Catherine wheel & Ride when shoegaze was emerging they were probably some of my faves due to the melodic nature.

Skywave was what I listened to the most of shoegaze bands of that time in the early to mid 2000s. Oliver later started death by audio pedal company and A Place to Bury Strangers, but Skywave has more variation in mood and feel.

Amazing video man, very interesting! I go with 90's Shoegaze to make my music, Slowdive, Difference Engine, Dreamscape, Ozean, etc

Main problem with shoegaze: All the bands from 90s sound like the product of their time while the band that started it all still sounds more fresh and cool than anything new that comes up... Which makes it hard to enjoy the genre in general, except for the bands that are going into more experimental/avant-garde territories. Casual rock-ish shoegaze without broken rhythms/interesting synth work/unusual blend with other genres just sounds boring after Loveless.

I agree that just putting on distortion and calling it shoegaze is deceptive. However, the experimental aspect is something to be appreciated and thankfully not every band tries to sound like mbv or slowdive. It was exactly the same with Sonic Youth, wherein many bands were heavily inspired by them, but it also developed a new sound from that inspiration alone. If we just applied this logic to Beatles or anything akin, then no one would bother making music, but inspirations come from somewhere for anyone. If someone doesn't like the general sound of shoegaze currently, they can go out there and make their own and be the change
