Julia & Eric Lewald here - thank you for all of this! It’s gratifying that XMenTAS is remembered, and so fondly, all these years later

It's crazy how the more things change the more things stay the same. Replace the word "mutant" with the word "gay" or "trans" and that describes 2023.

What's interesting about X men the animated series is that the character powers are opposed to their personalities. Rogue craves intimacy but her powers won't allow intimate touch, Wolverine is filled with hurt but his powers are focused on healing, Beast is visually a jungle creature who would seem to be wild and untamed but he's erudite and mild mannered, Cyclops as the leader is supposed to embody insight but his vision is impaired. Things like this is why the X men overall are great.

Watching the first X-Men movie, I realized something: it seemed more inspired by the cartoon than the comics. As comic accurate as the cartoon is, that doesn't mean that it doesn't have its original stories or characteristics, and I couldn't help but feel that the first film in the franchise was influenced by the animated series.

I think people are more mad at race swapping then characters of color

Fantastic points especially the pseudo outrage when books like the X-Men has always been about the marginalized. Unbelievable show, I hope the reboot does the original justice.

I never would have questioned the fact that Jubilee is a teenager, women, or half Asian. Jubilee is just as awesome for me now as she was while I grew up watching this show as a kid. The manufactured outrage won by you bringing it up in a manner that it might be a problem for some people. Anyone who has an issue with that most likely doesn't have a single care about XMEN the Animated series.

It's amazing how political this series gets while still being kinda true to the comics. It understood its premise, it understood its characters, and it understood fully and completely that you don't speak down to the audience, you treat them as intelligent. They'll follow along.

Really great stuff here. It’s funny you mention the nuance and how the pilot isn’t just “here are the good guys and here are the bad guys,” which is pretty much how the previous Pryde of the X-Men pilot was. Might be why I noticed that one test pilot felt so tonally different from the series, even as a kid.

As one of the last true midwestern American mall rats, I've never once seen a food court that serves chili fries. Mostly just soft pretzels and slightly suspicious stir fry.
