My 89 454 R3500 - I drive it once in a while, conservatively. The other day this one guy with his new Ford 350 trying to outstage me, I gave him a head start, caught up to him in a second. Later pulled up and asked what I got - told him the 454 ....his response "that's a real engine, treat her well". I bumped into a guy who uses a 91 extended crew cab pulls about 25k lbs in a goose. Auto transport business - had to junk his diesel due to CARB.

Thats about right, its not bullshit! Im trying to figure out why my stock supposed 230hp 385ftlbs tbi 454 scoots my 93 2500 suburban to 60 in 7 seconds. Apparently all the torque is there at idle. But some people say theirs are slow, but they probably dont tune theirs either. Probably depends who, or what shift in Tonawanda built em'... I replaced my timing chain and gear set and advance the ignition about a degree.

Speedo is almost pointless. I guess it helps keep the speed down. Does anyone know why they installed these 85 mph speedos in the states?? I’m from UK so it’s always seem weird to me.

During the energy crisis of the late 70s/early 80s, the federal gov mandated that speedos cap out at 85mph hoping people would slow down and drive more efficiently. They also highlighted 55mph on the speedo as it had become the national speed limit. There was no evidence this did anything to increase overall efficiency in the nation, and they ended up switching back.

Over here In Britain we could never understand how for instance the 1980 C3 corvettes and similar American cars were down to less than 200 bhp despite such massive engines. Then I found out all the things they did to restrict the horsepower. U can always de-restrict though 😁

@@jomamma1750 I love V8s. For yrs in Britain the only V8 u would commonly see is a Rover 3.5 which I think is about 214 cubic inch. It produced 158 bhp and wouldn’t rev. People always put them in kit cars or use it as an upgrade engine. I’ve always thought it was piece of crap because you can’t get much power out of it without spending a ton of money and it won’t Rev. It is simple though and lightweight so it has some good points. Think it was originally derived from a Buick engine. Now a lot of our V8s are in range rovers which are big and complicated and full of sensors 🙄I prefer your V8s. Chevy or Mopar all day long 😄

@@DeuceBiggerHo That sounds about right. Buick and Oldsmobile shared a tiny 215 ci aluminum V-8 back in the 60's and I seem to recall one of the English companies buying that motor out for UK usage. Our smallblocks Rock! The big blocks are even better but 8-10 mpg is no good. I'm glad you like them too. Tons of fun!

Which transmission is that? From the sound i have to guess the THM-400 also what rear end gear ratio are you running? I just bought a 1989 r3500 3+3 dually with a tbi 454 and THM-400 with the dana 70 rear axle running on 4.56 gears. ALSO have you done any mods to the engine (cam, ecu, prom, valvejob)?

Its a 4l80E transmission. Its running the stock dually 3.73 gears. only thing the truck has had done is rebuilt tbi, hedman hedders and dual exhaust no O2 sensors either. My truck is also the r3500 3+3 also just usually nobody knows they had a r3500 thats why I put c3500.

Adam Mcintosh No. I have an 89 Sierra that had a 350/700r4 but the engine crapped out so a 94 454/4L80E was swapped in and then the 3.73 gears were put in. There's absolutely nothing done to it and it's nowhere near this fast.

It runs well for its size and miles. I'm going to be pulling the engine this winter and give it a fresh rebuild. The only bad is fuel economy gets 14 mpg all day no matter what you are hauling or if you are cruising.

Thats good for what it is though. I used to get about 6 city 9/10 hwy out of my 78 The motor had a pretty good cam in it, ported heads, Edelbrock intake, headers, true dual straight pipes, K&N. 850CFM Holley carb. Still didn't get it like yours but it would keep up with my 97 C2500 with the Vortec 454 Is yours stock?

Chris Campbell its bone stock. Got hedmans on it 2.5 exhaust to two 44 flowmasters dumps out before rearend . But the motor has no work done to it so far..

Mike Anderson depends what year i think 1986 was last year 454 bbc had a carb after that it was tbi and so on. Unless some takes tbi off after 86 and replaces it with a carb.
