Hearing the British sing our anthem, or HM Royal Marines Band play it, gave me more solace than anything else at the time. Because it's not _just_ a song from a time we were at war -- it's a song about their defeat, and our resilience. The idea that we were, some 225 years later, both world powers and dear allies, is one of the most powerful things that can be said of humanity.

21 years ago this week, the people of the United Kingdom sang The Star Spangled Banner just days after the attacks on September 11. It’s reported that Her Majesty herself sang our anthem. Many Americans, like myself have not forgotten this. Tonight, I gladly return the gesture by singing God Save the Queen in the UK’s time of mourning. Many Americans share in the grief of the loss of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. I wish the people of the UK nothing but the best wishes during this difficult time.

@commonsense62578 жыл бұрын
+Mercedes Benz Not so the new group called "American" is mainly people of British origin who can trace their families back to the original colonies. Add that to the English, Scottish, Welsh and Scotch-Irish and the UK is by far the largest ethnic group in the US but that doesn't matter. The US was founded by the British. The USA's founding fathers, Washington, Jefferson, Franklin, Hamilton, etc were all of British ancestry. The American elites were educated in Britain. The ideologies and philosophy came from Britain. The father of liberalism and the ideology behind the American and French Revolutions John Locke was British. To call the US Irish or German is beyond stupid. If the founding fathers were called Murphy, O'Flanagan, Walsh, O'Sullivan or Muller, Schmidt, Schneider, Schulz you may have had some kind of a point. Italian?? The Southern Italian immigration came much later. Argentina is more known for it's Italian immigration. The US and the UK are very much intertwined. It is called the Anglo-American establishment. There is also the five eyes which links the Anglo speaking countries intelligence agencies. The superficial stuff like pizza, pretzels, hot-dogs, Guinness is great but that is not who controls the US.

This hits me on so many levels: Not only is the US National Anthem being played and sung in another country to show their support, but that it was sang the way it was intended to be. Being from America, you hear so many people's rendition of the Star Spangled Banner, and more often than not, they butcher the song where the song becomes obnoxious! This was beautifully done from a beautiful country! The US and the UK will forever be by each other's side! To our brothers and sisters in the UK, we love you all! +TheIceman567 it surprises me as a Brit how many Americans comment on these types of videos with comments towards the War for independence or the war of 1812, in Britain we just don't give these wars any headspace at all in terms of our relationship with the USA all we ever think about is our massive joint effort in WW2 and our "special relationship" ever since but many Americans like to comment on these types of videos about our ancient history such as the war of the 1700s and 1812-14 and it's refreshing to find an American who is "over it" and actually recognises today's Britain and understands the complexities of our 2 countries relationship and how it relates to today's world.

As a Brit, I felt proud of the decision makers who organised this event. This anthem was written for a war between our two countries, written against Britain. Well, that's what's so sad really. Most of the world supports the USA and most of the world felt awful about 9/11. It's just not very news worthy to tell the American people that the world generally likes them and supports them, so that's not what gets portrayed on the news. Plus, it doesn't make for much of a fear factor to use when you want to go to war. Here in Denmark people were in shock and it was obviously all over the news, papers, and just about every TV show you can imagine. The US embassy in Copenhagen was practically covered in flowers, candles, letters of support and American and Danish flags. www.mohea.com/thankyou.htm There's a tiny gallery showing what happened at some of the embassies around the world. The whole "The world hates us." thing is absolutely ridiculous and quite frankly depressing as well. Edit: Found another gallery.. A bigger one. www.wtc-trauer.de/ryanmirror/index.htm

Two especially unusual performances of the song took place in the immediate aftermath of the United States September 11 attacks. On September 12, 2001, Queen Elizabeth II broke with tradition and allowed the Band of the Coldstream Guards to perform the anthem at Buckingham Palace, London at the ceremonial Changing of the Guard, as a gesture of support for Britain's ally. The following day at a St. Paul's Cathedral memorial service, the Queen joined in the singing of the anthem, an unprecedented occurrence.

America, our relationship is a complex one - there have been times when we've been enemies and no doubt there will be times in the future when we don't see eye to eye with each other for whatever reason. But we will ALWAYS stand by your side, as we did in the aftermath of 9/11 - From me, a proud British girl

Some of the adults you are speaking about grew up in the 1960's and saw the horrible results of the Vietnam War on television and in newspapers every day (for me 14 years). Some of us understand and have tried to protect our children as best we could while trying to teach them as well. You sound like a very mature and intelligent young person and I wish you well in life as your generation faces its trials. God Bless You

When they began singing, I burst into tears. I'm 13. I was less than a month from 4 when 9/11 happened. The post-.9/11 world is all my younger siblings and I know. Adults just don't understand what it's like to have those horrible images pounded into your head since childhood. Seeing the outpouring of support and love from our friends across the Atlantic gave me chills- and still does. I feel a little safer knowing that no matter what, my country can count on yours for a little encouragement.

I had the opportunity to study in England and I never ran into problems because I was American. Most of the people I met there actually really liked America and thought it was cool that I was from there. Don't let the naysayers make up your mind for you. England is a beautiful country with an amazing culture and people. To all our UK cousins across the pond: Thank you for showing your support in such a big and meaningful way. Different though we may be, we're family.. and you guys show that.

Watching this brought tears to my eyes. As an American, I know we have our differences. We fought a war for independence and won. But through the years, we have become the closest of allies. We fought together in 2 World Wars and remain close to this day. God bless the people of the United Kingdom. You will forever be our friends, allies and brothers! 🇬🇧

Hey, I was an 11 year old boy in South Africa when this happened. And I took the time to learn (and understand) the lyrics of the US National Anthem so we could pay our respects at assembly _before_ we sang our own national Anthem: Nkosi Sikelel' iAfrika. As the rest of the world, we were apalled by those attacks. May they ever rest in God's Peace and one day reunite with their loved ones. Amen.

One of the most emotional moments for me as an American was when the Queen had the band play our National Anthem. Also the day that every country in Europe stood in a moment of silence and stillness at the moments on the clocks the passenger jets hit the WTC towers a few days after it happened. One time when the world was truly united in comfort and grief.

The US and UK have many differences, but there is far more that unites us than divides us. Not everything worked out as planned in the last decade or so, but I'm proud to have stood shoulder to shoulder with our American friends. From a soldier who actually did the standing and not a wittering civvy who doesn't know what it means.

Listen to that beautiful singing of our National Anthem. Would that we could all join in so heartily singing our anthem. Next time you hear i,t watch how folks simply don't know the words, don't sing, and yell and scream to "play ball" before it even ends. My hat is off to you, my fellow Brits. You displayed such love and support for the US that fateful time in our history. Thank you.

I don't know why, but the US anthem is just one of my personal favorites. Something about it just rings true. The fact that it was written during a battle, and these lines were written naturally from a brilliant mind as he saw them happening. Amazing.

We stood side by side and fought the Nazis as they blitzed bombed London, the UK has also stood by America and we have fought this war on Terror. Agree with it or not but the important thing is we don't loose sight of the fact that we have a shared heritage and ancestry for the most part. We will remain the closest of allies... God Save the Queen, and may God Bless America!
@Whoami6919 жыл бұрын
+billy mathes Factually incorrect, the battle of Britain officially ended at operation Barbarossa - The Nazi attack on the soviets. The Americans did not get militarily involved until December 1941 - 6 Months later. That said, i agree with the sentiment.

as a friend of the USA I would like to share this little story. Someyears ago my wife and I spent a day in London. we went to St Pauls cathederal. and went down in the cript. there I the tombs of Nelson & Wellington. in the one corner is a large white marble monument to the American airborn divisions of D Day. I was at the top of the steps looking at the detail when my wife called me . I looked round and at the bottom of the steps stood an old man with blue jeans and a bomber jacket. on his jacket were a lot of medals. I went down and apologised for keeping him waiting. while he was paying his respects his wife told me he was in the airborn division that landed on d day. He was one of themen who bought my freedom I have enjoyed for all these years. so glad I met him, it was an honour.

That is a wonderful story. One of grandfather's cousins (an American from Iowa) enlisted in the British RAF as a fighter pilot in 1939. --He did this two years before the US entered World War II in 1942. This cousin was a part of the first group of 12 Americans who volunteered to join the British air force. About one year later he was shot down and killed over the English Channel during the Battle of Britain.
