@@ceecee8757 First .. not everything ends up in land fills, much gets re-purposed... and second... if something IS trash.. why keep it? If you do then you are turning your home into a dump. Learn to re-cycle intelligently... clothing is often recycled to make many useful things... that creates jobs and NEW products. People choosing to live in filthy, hoarding situations does NOT help this world. Keeping only what sparks joy teaches us to buy wisely and not repeat old buying habits. A tidy home helps to create a tidy mind. When I am able to FIND my tools now I no longer have to go out and buy new tools. When I tidied I found close to 10 measuring tapes.. so I gave away half of them. I certainly didn't throw them out in the rubbish!.... nor do I treat my home as a dump.

I have to say i really learned a lot and i only discovered her last week. I happened to already be organising home and realised that i was doing most of the things right to begin with but it really helped me to move forward where i got stuck. I love so much a tidy house and learning not to buy stuff which are unnecessary is the key going forward.

@@ceecee8757 First: Recycled clothing is not "burned"... it has many many different uses. Recycled materials is a whole industry. My old blankets went to an animal shelter The best thing about the Kon-mari method is that I NOW BUY Far Less STUFF in the first place. Long Term .. Tidying in this way puts less stress on our natural resouces because we realize we don't NEED so much. Tidy NOW... and remove what does not 'Spark Joy'.. or wait untill you die and your kids will likely just toss it all in the dump... rather than try and give things a second 'life' elsewhere.

The problem with landfills is not that we tidy up, but the fact that we are bombarded by junk that we feel we should have and the fact that eveything we buy is wrapped in plastics when it is unessesary like veg and fruit for example and the fact that most of the us tend to want more that what we need just because it is there and available. Anyways just a few examples that add up with the rest. Its a huge problem all over the world not in america only.and you are a huge country . I live on a small island in the mediterranean. The land fills here are exhausted and we pay to have rubbish exported. The sea is contaminated with shit. Humans want more and more thinking that what we use and throw vanishes by magic, well not really! From my part all i can do is to be aware of what i buy and consume and that i make good use of it and dispose of waste and stuff that is no longer needed the best way that the system provides.

Shame the chairs are too high for Marie and her translator (whose feet are not able to touch the ground). The Translator should have been given a better set up like a mini desk to make it easier to write.

Disappointed she is asking simple questions that are in the first book, why not go beyond to material we do not have easy access to? Interviewer did not read the books - and this spoon feeding does not encourage people to READ. The audiobooks are 5 hours each (short and easy).

That's because messy houses aren't featured on tours. Japanese houses also tend to have good storage, so mess can be hidden away easily. However, there are plenty of messy or overcrowded homes in Japan as well!

Overall I would say that tends to be more true. However, depends where you go. In the big cities people tend to be more transient and have much simpler apartments. In the countryside you get larger homes with a lot of junk.

Forgot to mention, the main points are: give away the things you no longer need, say a prayer of gratefulness and goodbye; folding cloths as stand up rectangles and put in drawer vertically; organize documents into types: achieved, need to deal with, identities like passports and to be threaded; organize everything else based on categories in your home. Examples: tools in one place; shopping bags in one place; stationary in one place; summer cloths in one place, etc.

It is not about Marie organizing YOUR space... it is about learning from Marie HOW to JOYfully Tidy your own space. It's a journey and Marie is our Guide... not our maid.

Just an afterthought here.... it could well be that it is the clutter in your home which is actually DRAINING your energy. As you begin your Tidying journey you will likely find that you become MORE and MORE energized. As you get more into the process and see the results... the more enthusiastic you will become. Success breeds success. The first step is usually the hardest because we have to break that sense of inertia. ONCE we get moving however... it's really hard to stop... you just want to keep going! It's almost magical how that works.

I think some sentimental items that have baggage or heavy energy or negative energy that keeps you stuck, sad, angry, or depressed or drains your energy should be gotten rid of. For each person that is something different and may take time. However, something either essential or heirloom wise is best to keep it but like for instance when maybe their are sudden death to a family members and someone keeps the room in tact for years that is not healthy for anyone. In my opinion, I personally experienced this I felt their energy there good and bad. It lingered and when you have to sleep in those rooms it takes a strong minded person to do it. I had to do it because other family members couldn’t and had to personally detox mentally and spiritually every time after leaving for my personal sanity until that family member was able to get over their grief and they cleaned the room when they were ready. It happens.

She says you should consider whether they are bringing you joy or holding you back from the future you envision for yourself. You need to evaluate your possessions and make conscious decisions, not just make a decision to keep something once and never reassess.

momof2 my toilet brush sparks joy since I picked one I liked that’s obviously helpful. The sponge sparks joy since I used it to clean my dishes then I squeeze it dry and put it under the sink. The stinky socks gets washed and the irritating husband can have a nice attitude if your house was surrounded by joy. The cat doesn’t spark joy then you might have to consider not having it.

Actually my toilet brush does spark joy as it helps me to maintain a clean and healthy environment. Dirty tired sponges do not spark joy... so I replace them with clean ones. My red oval bucket sparks joy... it makes it a pleasure to wash my floors. The too small, leaky black bucket.... Not so much. Sometimes it's the little things in life which matter.
