I modify an old telescope to make a high resolution solar telescope to image sunspots and granulation in high detail on the Sun.

wow so interesting and hard to find step-by-step DIY solar telescope information. 😎 I am learning how to make a SDR radio telescope which is a challenge to get the hobby parts list put together. In so doing I bounce around on cool videos like this one, which would be wonderful in mapping the sun with radio and optical superimposed images. 🧐 Thanks a lot.

I understand your use of the felt, Do you have adhesive back paper on the inside of your dew cap, and inside of your scope. I have used it for years inside my Newtonians. My one concern is, have you had any problems with the adhesive giving away because of the heat inside the scope, and starting to curl? If that happened, you might get an ignition of the paper from the concentrated solar image coming down the tube.

Hi, thanks for the question. The felt is 'Velour', a man made product (from Hobby Craft), i think it would melt first, but I've not done any experiments, I'm not sure if it is flammable - probably in the right conditions, I've not had issues with it curling, the dew cap and inside tge telescope are covered in Velour. I don't leave the telescope unattended when solar Observing.

Is that a 5 inch refractor? 127mm?

Yes, it isn't a very good one, but I'm imaging a very narrow band so the chromatic abberations dissappear. You can see my images here britastro.org/observations/user.php?user=7740

Your images using the Herschel wedge are quite good! I noticed the improvement in resolution when I got one for the 2012 transit of Venus. I have since tossed all my solar screen caps because I no longer use them when looking at the sun.
