How is it possible this has hundreds of views and only a small number of likes???? Come on people, don’t forget to push the like button, it’s important to show appreciation for these great KZbinrs. This video is brilliant and very timely, given a new year is beginning. I am definitely going to make this my project for 2023. Thank you for the inspiration Matthew.

Yes, doing much better now. When I posted this, it had less than 100. Sometimes people just forget, I’ve been guilty of this myself.

Coming back after seeing this when you posted it.. I Spent a week just focusing on one value study, slowing right down, and then did the painting with colour and it's pushed my skill level, ability and sense of 'knowing / seeing' further than any other tip, tutorial or teaching I've ever had... Great start to 2023, thank you so much!!! Can't wait to keep doing more now!

Great advice, Mathew! I’m just starting to make this a habit and it’s actually fun and freeing. It’s not the actual painting so not the pressure I put on myself to create a finished product. Super helpful! Thanks you!

I completely agree! No pressure with these.

This is great advice! Eons ago when I took art classes in college, I remember that you did not receive a grade for your assignment if you didn't turn in your value study of your final painting. What other good things did they teach me that I've forgotten!
@erikolufandersen Жыл бұрын
You are so right Matthew. For years I thaught that using photoshop for finding values was a good idea, boy was I wrong, as by doing so, you are robbing yourself for so many valuble hours of painting and learning. Your channel made me realise that. Cheers for that mate!

Great stuff. I'm sold. I've tinkered with a few of these studies, but you convinced me to do 2 per week. I'm incorporating that into my routine. Happy painting in 2023 everyone!

Thank you so much, this makes a lot of sense. One of my previous art teachers told me to squint my eyes which I found really helpful as you end up jist seeing shapes and are not confused by detail at that stage. Cant wait to get back into watercolours.

Although I’ve heard this before, it’s never too many times! I admit I don’t do value studies as I’ve found they don’t help but they MUST help. Thanks very much Matthew What you said makes sense. The reference photos you used were a good example of complexity. What I would find VERY useful Matthew, is if you could explain to us, perhaps in a demo, what exactly you choose to leave out in a photo eg, the cello player! I would’ve tried to include ALL the pillars behind him.! The street scene - which bits to leave out. I think that is what frustrates me more than anything. You’ve taught me values, layering, washes and I’m fairly competent but a complex scene demotivates me even when I’d love to paint it. Perhaps a short tutorial just on simplifying a street scene? I promise I’ll start values studies again. 😊

Even before this, I had to slow myself down to draw the scene better. I was trying to do a horizon and a few lines and dive in. NO! For me, if I can draw it well with pencil, half the work is already done. I look forward to trying this out to add another layer to my work. Thank you!

This is great! It reminds me of the contour drawings my high school art teacher had us do. Using a large sheet of paper, we used a thin Crayola marker to draw our model without lifting the marker off the paper. It really helped us to isolate shapes and get over the fear of drawing people. It never occurred to me that I could apply it to landscapes! This is really cool - I'm going to give it a try. Thanks!

Great video, Matt. Just wish I had the patience to do it and not dive right in! I feel a new year resolution coming on! BTW, on a more mundane note, those notebooks you use. What would you recommend? I imagine they are pretty cheap and cheerful. Happy new year!
@learntopaintwatercolor2 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's my resolution! It is a cheap canson notebook. I think it might be 90lb paper. It's not great but good for a study.

Thanks Matthew, i will definitely start following this approach, i have a question if you please could help me with, i always see a lavander color in your palette and was wondering what do you usually use it for, also what brand is this color from since it seems not many brands have this specific tone for some reason.

Try this -Painting Beautiful Watercolor Landscapes: Transform ordinary places into extraordinary scenes by Joyce Hicks. She has value studies done for each demo painting in the book they are pencil value studies though but you can use watercolor instead.
