Those SPI carburetor boots are actually pretty good quality, been running them for years, the only thing I like to do is get right stuff gasket maker and do a light coat between the intake manifold and the new carb boot just for extra piece of mind

any reason why they're smokey until they warm up?

Some of the smoke is actually steam, the rest of the smoke is from the rich fuel mixture during warm-up and residual oil burning off from inside the crank case. Totally normal for a two stroke machine.
