Arthur St. John is a dedicated 93-year-old part-time bagger at Market Basket. He’s worked there for 22 years, but his career started when he was barely 16, and despite his age, he doesn’t look like he ever wants to stop working. But someone makes that decision for him. His manager suddenly fires him with no explanation, forcing him to look for employment elsewhere. But the community rallies around the old man, and encourages him to take his sweet revenge. When Arthur comes back to the store to make things right, his old manager turns pale!

I was a manager for many years, and people like Arthur were definitely the best employees. Their whole work ethic was fantastic and we had no discipline problems as they were educated at a time when discipline, manners and hard work, etc was taught. Great story and I hope Arthur has many years left ❤️

Retirement isn't for everyone. 50% of those who are Arthur's age still are working not because they need to but to stay active because Retirement is not for them. Arthur however needed that job because his pension and social security would not pay for all his bills.

Arthur St John was not fired. He was out of work because of the Market Basket strike and shutdown in 2014. The gofundme was set up to help him get through the many weeks of shutdown. When the shutdown ended Arthur returned to his position.

@@00060850When The Demoulas family forced out Arthur T Demoulas the CEO who was beloved and respected, all the employees in all the stores walked out. So the management then tried to fire all the striking workers. Then the customers mass boycotted every Market Basket Store in New England. It went on for 2 or 3 months until management was forced to sell their shares to Arthur T or the company would go under. As soon as that happened every single employee returned. (including Arthur St. John) There's a wiki paqe about it. It was an amazing show of how the power of people can make change.

The same thing happened when my 70+ husband was working for Walmart. They had brought in a new manager. We were relocating out of Texas to a store in Utah. The manager there had agreed to transfer him. Unfortunately the Texas manager felt he was too old to continue working for Walmart and the transfer didn’t go through. He changed employers.

This is not how the story goes at all. It is nearly all fabricated. Arthur St John worked at Market basket right up to his death at age 96 in 2017. He was a beloved fixture at the store right up to the end. There was a go fund me for Arthur but it had nothing to do with him being fired. It was during the strike and shutdown in 2014 of all the Market Basket Stores during the DeMoulas family feud and the force out of the highly respected Arthur T DeMoulas. But Arthur T eventually ended up buying out the family and became sole owner of the chain. The gofundme was to help Arthur St John pay his bills during the many weeks of shutdown. Arthur returned to his job afterwards and worked right up to his death at 96 just shy of his 97th birthday. I don't know why anybody would make up this awful story.

The story of this truly special and wonderful man Arthur needs to be shared far and wide. The faith, ethics, kindness, selfless generosity and dedication that man has, and at age 93, is absolutely incredible, amazing and much needed in our world. If more people were like Arthur, the world economy would be better, we wouldn't have inflation, socialism/communism/marxism, and the morals, Christian values and purity would fully return to our society. No more Amazon and communist corporate takeovers, and no more "Made In China" type marketing. It would just be the way it should be. Thank you Arthur for being the shining example we all need more of in this world. God love him.

My dad had a retail store on Hollywood Blvd. for over fourth years and taught me that the customer always comes first and is always right and that if a man is not honest or reliable he isn’t worth anything. Interesting note is that Sam Walton founder of Walmart had a elderly person always at the door to greet customers and I think it worked out pretty good for Sam and his heirs.

It is sad to write that bulling has taken place in many work environments and reporting the injustices fall in the wastebaskets of management. I worked in customer service, sales and marketing. I left my first employment after 20 years and a bully was very present. I retired from two company’s and a bully help me decide to leave. These events were always reported and these people are working somewhere and making many fine employees unhappy. Taking a stand is hard to do but needs to happen. Good for Author!

Wanting to keep working after retirement age is an ethic that a lot of people don't have. I know some that are in their 70's and still working. Of course these days that's the way it is. Myself, I am 65 and still working. I drove truck over the road, long haul, for 30 years. With my wife's health issues, I retired from trucking and found a job working as a security guard. I took an early retirement at 62. I work part-time plus get my social security. When I hit 66 and 10 months, I am going to go back to full time here. The work is not strenuous, and I enjoy it. My father, after 35 years of driving a city bus, after retiring he got a job part-time driving a school bus. He worked up until he was 72 then decided he wanted to spend more time fishing....lol. I can see me working till my legs give out. I do not like to sit still. Arthur sounds like a fantastic gentleman. We need more like him. Kudo's to Arthur.

It’s not a work ethic at that age. It’s more luck that you’re mentally and physically able to work full time after 65. As someone who worked in the tobacco and hay fields at 13 and 14, then right before my 15 th birthday I got an after school job at the local country store. Then spend 36 years in refrigeration as a meat cutter, retired a few years back. I help my sister in the flower shop she owns, but there’s no way I have time for full time work. Luckily I don’t need the money and I have a couple grand nephews that always keep me going

I'm a senior and do all my shopping at Walmart. It is 1 block from my home and they have everything from veggies to sandpaper. But also that store must have great management. The greeters are mostly seniors or close to it. Most of the stock shelving are mostly young women and are all helpful and will drop what they are doing and take me to what I'm looking for. Always with a smile. All heavy items were dealt with young men. In the self checkout, because on my scooter, I'm handicapped, they are right there asking me if I need help. Just a pleasant shopping experience. So age really doesn't mean anything anymore. So if a person can do a job and do it well, leave them alone. This is a great story.

When I was a small child in the late '50's very early '60's we had a Sears dept. store that on the rooftop parking level there was the kindest friendly elderly black gentleman that sold hot dogs and pretzels. We always parked at the top to see "Hot Dog Man". He was phenomenal in how he remembered, as far as I know, what everybody wanted on their dog. There were folks that would go there just for a hot dog or pretzel with no intention of going in Sears to shop but would end up in the store anyway with that 'Well, while I'm here" shopping. Unfortunately he passed away and it was then we found out that he had been there for 30+ years and was 102 years old. This was in Washington DC and the "Oh Well" attitude was becoming common except in this case. Sears announced and held a memorial for him and retired his hot dog business because A: He didn't work for Sears and they never charged rent and B: He was irreplaceable. Many people wanted to buy his hot dog machine but it was donated to his church per his request. May he R.I.P.

Anybody can die at any age I was 23 when I had a stroke at work so she doesn't matter and it's sick and wrong to discriminate based on age I've hired kids young people 18-28 and they can't show up two days in a row For 25$ and hour but I've hired 60 and over and they are here every day and work like tenen so you are just wrong

OMG, the same thing happen to me. I was working at good will in nj a new manager came in ( a young arrogant nasty bull, oh my God that she is ) everyone is gone. I’m 80 years old, a hard worker, I show up everyday I enjoy working. I also needed my job, I know how you feel Arthur I’m scared to death. My S.S. Does not even cover my bills.

NJ is known for being corrupt, high cost of living and surprises by bosses with layoffs. Hopefully you get out of that state and move to Florida where it’s cheaper

Amazing and wonderful, but I I'm still left upset. I feel justice still wasn't completed and that the store manager let off too easily. He can just go ahead and find another job and do the same thing over again. Personally I feel somebody should have pressed criminal charges and have a trial for financial misconduct. And then Arthur demonstrated his ability and skill and his working with his employees that he should have been offered at least an assistant manager position so he could oversee and be a role model for other employees. I assume Arthur would have turned down the offer, but it would have been a great gesture on the part of the company.

Arthur should have become an assistant manager, and spokes person for the company on a national level. You don't just toss aside 93 years of life experienced who has seen generations come and go, no his knologe and life exp. Are invaluable he has a vast amount of wisdom, you can't buy that. In any industry that knologe and wisdom are invaluable, if its hard to understand someone who wants to work at 93 should be prized its a great example of determination in life and a goal for others. Plus age discrimination past 40 is a serious crime and its a serious crime.sure the older man might move slower then a 16 year old But everybody know 16 year olds know everything! Its true ask any of them. Moving faster isn't always the best idea its the joy love and smiling face that sets your store apart of other stores. That smile and good cheer will keep your customers coming back. There whole day after that falls into place just from that one act.

I remember Market Basket in California back in the '70 in early 1980, Market Baskets closed all their door in California because of bankruptcy, they was building new stores all over the place and thing gone too fast.

If it is, it's buried. Arthur St. John passed in 2017. News outlets only note that his hours had been cut due to a boycott that arose from the ouster of the company's CEO, Arthur T Demoulas by his cousin, Arthur S Demoulas. As far as I can find, evil manager Robert Thompson does not exist.

If this story were true, that would have happened. But someone altered the facts to make a more dramatic story. Arthur was never fired. He was just unemployed when the DeMoulas cousins were battling for control.

Arthur showed extraordinary abilities and perseverance. His talent included computer skill, dealing with people, working tirelessly until he accomplished what was needed, great energy and resourcefulness. They should have made him manager, replacing the guy who fired him.

Robert is not typical of Market Basket managers. There is a post below that says that this story is fabricated. It says that the only time Arthur was out of work was when the DeMoulas family was struggling for possession of the chain, and most of us dedicated customers boycotted the stores until the right cousin regained control.

My friend Fort Worth Cat's Baseball Minor League manager, Wayne "Twig" Terwilliger, 60 years in professional baseball, an WW2 Iwo Jima Marine retired from Baseball to the tune of the Marine Corp band. Leaving baseball, at age 94 was working at a Weatherford, Texas grocery store sacking groceries, this until his death. Manager of the Minnesota Twins & a player in the early years of Major league ball. Money was not the reason for his working sacking groceries but purpose & structure in life.
