Today I am driving a car with an incredible headline figure - from a 2L engine, this S2000 produces over 500 horsepower courtesy of a TTS supercharger kit and a redline of 9300rpm. It should be barking mad, but is it?

I own a 5xxbhp S2000, similar kit to this. Theres loads more low down than a standard car. At 3k rpm it makes what the old tune did at 8.5k rpm! Yes it does need suspension and brakes, yes it's scary, but fun! Get a later one with traction control and you feel loads better.

I've been wanting to end up with more power in mine. The engine has been rebuilt with new lower comp forged pistons, skunk2 conrods etc and so the comp ratio is 10:1 rather than 11.7:1 (i have an early jdm). Currently getting new ecu, loom, race dash, and full underside to be refreshed. Soon to go new wheels (square setup(245/40r17 on 17x9 +42 rims)) with ohlins and polybushes like what Jay has done in his other video. Looking to get these bits done then can look to respray (paint has gone to shit) and then go forced induction. Probably could've bought 2 more s2000's for the money but I'm going for something very unique that will last well into the future. 😅 I agree that on observation of dyno sheets, the TTS kit can make loads more torque at 3k or so onwards. I know you mentioned it and sorry this is 3 years later but wanted to ask if it really is the case that it's good for torque in the mid range like the dyno sheets show? p.s. i did have an ecu after the rebuild before but the wiring was terrible and would cause bad reads etc. still, with low comp on one piston due to failed spark plug tip, it did only 200bhp to 265bhp (est. flywheel bhp for both)

And next a broken diff! I have one of these, same colour, and I broke a shaft on wrynose pass so trust me give it some stick on the hairpins and even at standard power they can break the shaft, but that’s cheaper than a diff. Suspension, get some ohlins or proflex pointless having power if you can’t keep the rubber on the road, I’d spend money on that before yet more grunt. One thing I so wish for is a sequential ‘box, had one in my rally car and they’re totally awesome to drive with, slick quick and no or little chance of buzzing the engine on downshifts. More bump steer than a mk2 as he rightly identifies. And yes get some polybushes then get it set up right. Never be a stiff chassis, it’s got no top! So suffer that for a decent tan.

I think the lack of torque is one of the great things about the s2000 when u start making big power on it. My car has 700hp and it hooks better than you might think. Personally I am not a big fan of the supercharger on the s2000. I have driven a turbo and supercharged one and a turbo one will blow it out of the water as far as performance goes. Now on to your build. I think you did the right thing with going with all motor. An all motor Honda is a blast on the street. I do think you should have went the k swap route. A k24(2.4L) can be had for about $800 in the states and with a 2.0 head with cams they make some serious power. Throw some pistons and rods in the 2.4 and you make over 300 at the wheels easily. Plus the k series has so much more aftermarket support for all motor. Most s2k guys go the k swap route if they are going all motor. Simply they respond much better to all motor mods. Yes I am trying to convince you to change your build. lol

Cool fact but 426 Hemis got the same criticism F20’s get lol. People don’t realize these cars on a track barely dip below 6000 rpm. It’s the perfect powerband for circuit racing, you can brake late and throttle on very early. The casual driver is an idiot and doesn’t deserve to have an S2000. Those people should stop complaining about lack of torque from a 2L motor and just buy a V8. But yea 426 Hemis were slow Below 3k because of their aggressive cams and the 440 was typically praised as being quicker from redlight to redlight street racing.

11:11 My unpopular opinion - I personally would get a hardtop for a S2000 and ND generation Mazda MX-5 and remove the soft-top mechanism. I'm more of an introvert and never really liked the idea of being seen in a convertible, but at the same time, I love the potential of the chassis of the S2000 + ND generation MX-5 has to offer, and I see them as good novice/amateur trackday cars that can be driven to-and-from the track in a more refined way than an Exige, Caterham etc (even if those drive better than those japanese cars). The S2000s free-revving ability and the gearshift feel is what appeals to me about the car, however not for its convertible aspect. But in all honesty, I wish Honda and Mazda offered coupe variants for those S2000s and MX-5s because of torsional rigidity, scuttle shake, aerodynamics, NVH, lack of practicality to for track tyres + jack-stands; unlike the BRZ/86. The 86/BRZs are perfect for how much more 'rigid' the chassis are and their practicality, but compared to the 2020 ND MX-5, it feels slower, doesn't sound very nice as you rev it out and has a very low-rent interior even for the top trim models.
@smilepermile888
@smilepermile888 3 жыл бұрын
I'm really excited to see how the next generation BRZ/86 will be like, because of those reasons you mentioned. The test mule photos from japanese 'scoop' magazines indicate that the exterior will be like an evolutionary design, but the interior looks like it will have one of those hideous iPad screens. Power wise, they say about 230hp from a 2.4 flat 4, with slightly more torque (much needed). Hope they keep the weight down too at well under 1300kg.

Indeed, if I drive it in the day time I keep the top up because I don't like people looking at me. [Usually only take it out at night] So I've considered the hard top as well but then I think it's best enjoyed with the top down.
@Jupiter__001_
@Jupiter__001_ 3 жыл бұрын
The S-2000 has a "high X-bone" chassis design, which gives it a very rigid body, reducing the flex to below the levels of even many hard-tops. To make it hard-top would be to create a perfect track weapon, especially with a roll-cage to improve further on this.

Not liking this, The S2000 is such a good car left alone. Putting a crazy amount of power in just seems to ruin it for me. Same problem with all the good 90's performance Japanese cars in the states, Alot of them got modified (badly) and now it so damn hard to find good ones anymore for a reasonable price. Im fine with modifying a base non performance car because you are not really ruining something already good but when something like the S2000 or a Type R gets modified I just feel that its kind of pointless. Not trying to bash Tuners or Hot rodders but its getting frustrating to me seeing something like a WRX STI stanced or has some crazy swap making 800hp to me just ruins the car and makes it harder for someone just looking for a decent quick car that hasnt been molested. Like I said, I dont have a problem with Tuners or Hot Rodders having fun but why would you take something already good and butcher it?

@artorias It’s not about being purist for purist’s sake, it’s a case of drivability and where the car feels “right”. I have two S2000s. One stock (but with K&N FIPK, berk cat and Legalis R) , and one supercharged at 360-440 depending on the map. And listen, if I’m going on a British B road blast (ie tight and twisty with lots of undulations and quite often shit conditioned tarmac ), I’ll always take my stock car. Why? Because as standard, on the straighter, faster A roads, it’s not fast enough. BUT, on those tight twisty roads, with hedges and stone walls right next to you with the car buzzing, it’s just perfect. And that’s when the S2000 in stock form just makes absolute sense.

I think your comments re suspension are completely misplaced (sorry!). I have Tein springs on mine and they are brilliant! Partnered with working oe shock absorbers they enable fantastic control on the road and inspire confidence. I would guess the shocks on the car you drove are past their best and/or it needs a four wheel alignment. I’m sorry but I really have to take issue with your “coilovers are the answer to everything” implication too. For the S2000 they’re mostly cheap rubbish or overkill! I also think the standard brakes (with DS2500) are more than up to the job but again they have to be in fully working condition. Apart from that, loved the video 👍🏻
