Im going to say this, just as I said it about The Godfather. There's a reason Sonny is killed and never becomes the Don. He was a hot head. Michael made a better Don because he was levelheaded. And it was a biblical ending.

I see why people think that, but the ending was just another victory for him. The only way he was caught and ultimately killed was because they broke many of the laws they swore to protect. They unjustly looked into his private accounts to find his property next to the prison, which was the only way they could figure out his plan. Then even when they knew his plan the only way for them to actually stop him was to plant the bomb in his cell and barricade his exit. They may not have detonated it but they killed him with no due process. All he was trying to do was show that the legal system was flawed, and every move they made to the end proved that. His death was the final lesson making the supposed good guys murderers. The very thing that landed him in jail in the first place(killing criminals) was what they in-turn had to do to stop him.

The whole movie is an overrated shitpile made popular by edgy teens and housemoms that thought a few F-bombs, and some basic "philosophy" made it "deep". I remember seeing this in theaters when it came out when I was younger. Hated it then. Gave it a chance over a decade later, thinking maybe some time and life experience would give me a different perspective. Nope, still a shithouse movie, and more proof that Butler needs to just stop trying American accents, and "deeper" acting, when he's more suited to action schlock films.

One of my lifelong best friends has been a prosecuting attorney for over 30 years. His father, who passed away a few years ago, was a Judge. When this movie came out over a decade ago, a group of us were having dinner, Judge included, and we were laughing about this movie. In fact, we were calling my friend "Nick" as an homage. I remember his dad talking about the woman Judge in this film, and he was pretty animated about how much liberty the Hollywood writers took in portraying a Judge's behaviors. He did, however, make one tremendous mental observation from his nearly 50 years on the bench. He said (paraphrasing): "The part where she agreed with the legal precedent - that crap happens way too often." He went on to say (again, paraphrasing) "too many Judges seem to want to shock the court - they seem to want to be unpredictable, rather than being legal. They'd rather be remembered for being outrageous than for being consistent, and this is a dangerous precedent for true justice in this country." I've never been able to watch this scene the same way since.

But the judge in the film was being consistent? That's what following precedent means. If it happened before, then you continue to follow to do it again. All too often, you sometimes get judges that *don't* follow precedent because they want to be outrageous and remembered, which is very dangerous behaviour for the legal profession. When the people who make the law don't follow their own rules, then the law is a sham.

1:33 This is the critical point in this scene. Nick tells the judge that he will confess to the crime. The alleged criminal has definitively stated that he will admit that he's a criminal, he just hasn't done it yet. And rather than inquire about why the criminal is ready to confess to a crime she was just going to let him walk out the door scott free. It's one thing to maintain reasonable doubt but at this point it's clear to Clyde that the justice system is a game. The lives of those involved don't matter. And you even see him shaking his head at the absurdity of the judge's explanation for letting him go
@Treblaine2 жыл бұрын
A promise to confess is ridiculous. A confession is a being a witness against yourself, to illustrate how ridiculous a promise of a confession is imagine if they said: "No we haven't got any witnesses who said they saw the defendant break any law, but we got one guy who says that at some point in the future he'll say IF he saw anything but for now he's giving us nothing." This is different from a witness making an official police report AND promising to testify in court.
@hamsta112 жыл бұрын
well.. it also misillustrates the legal principles involved here. Basically if the prosecution got lazy then either they were expecting a kangaroo court and/or Jamie Lee Fox's character was negligent and committed a form of malpractice. People misunderstand that we don't operate this way to protect criminal rights... we operate this way to not take away rights or worse, life, from an innocent person... which is something quite frankly we have failed at quite a lot. How many murderers should walk free so an innocent person is not sentenced to death? People love the idea that because he promised to confess that therefore he must be guilty because only the guilty confess. Sound like any situation anyone has ever read about where in certain other countries people seem to confess to crimes all the time without trial? Quite frankly, it is just a romanticized and dramatized scene that is inaccurate and misguided. It just looks and sounds good and stirs the appropriate human outrage and emotions. But its pointless.

@@hamsta11 Thank you, finally someone who’s making some sense. Judges aren't omniscient gods: all they have to go off of is evidence, and a "promise to confess" is not evidence. Instead of addressing one of our judicial system's actual problems, the scene naively stabs at this contrived straw man

im sorry but the ending prevented me of believing that as well... great film nonetheless not a classic though imo

What I love most about this scene and the movie in general is that it highlights the blatant flaws in our judicial system, there are so many loopholes and technicalities in the way laws are interpreted and twisted to fit or justify a criminal event that it can hardly be called justice at all. This movie can scarcely be labeled fiction at this point. I also agree that the ending sucked.

Young Metro she's written to be a terrible judge dude. That's the point of her character.

Christian Westwood that's exactly what I was trying to subtly tell him. The characters obviously have to be written a certain way to serve the plots purpose. If that means that a judge might not have common sense or a criminal may know way too much annotated code that just so happens to be exactly what he needs for that specific case he was in much less everything else in the movie. It's written off and explained in a scene explaining how he was a think tank guy and stuff. Obviously, I am sure you know all this I was just explaining it to that person that may not know and said what they said. Pretty good film though. I liked it. Solid acting by the two leads for sure.

This is one of my top 10 all time favourite movies. Gerard Butler is so good in this role. The ending is a little weak but I love the context and structure of the whole plot. I'm thinking the "I'll see ya later, Nick" was a spur of the moment add on by Gerald.

Seriously one of my favorite movies of all times except for the ending that killed it for me. Sometimes the villains win, it's life, they have as much chance of winning as anyone else. Our MC was smart, methodical, patient, and determined and he loses because he is the antagonist of the story, it's freaking silly.
@KS-xk2so2 жыл бұрын
Honestly in life the villain wins way more often than the good guy. Jamie Foxx destroyed an awesome movie with his horseshit demands.

Everything went exactly to plan for Clyde, even at the end. His entire reason for everything he did was to change Nick into someone who would focus on justice rather than conviction rates and Nick did that by going in and killing Clyde instead of allowing Clyde to continue his murders. Watch the movie more closely and actually listen next time.

He's an idealist. there is no perfect justice system. If we made one based on his beliefs there would be flaws, and another person like him would arise arguing the opposite. That being said, I still really like his character, and his ideals, a lot more than everyone else.
@Diegoshadow856 жыл бұрын
It's not about "perfect system" it's about judges giving a damn and think and take responsibility of what are they doing.

It is more about not giving violent offenders deals because it is the easiest way or letting violent offenders be free on the streets while awaiting trial every person who works in the DAs office will say that they want to find justice for the victims but like any other business it is about the numbers the attorney wants the most conviction any way possible and that means allowing murderers and rapist to have lighter sentences now I agree there is no such thing as a perfect system

Per Deadline, it has now been revealed that Law Abiding Citizen 2 is officially a go. Butler, who also served as a producer on the original, is producing the sequel alongside fellow returning producers Wimmer, Lucas Foster, and Alan Siegel.
