stock trans truck currently at 380k km's and still pulling hard. I'm told by professional trans builders these 4L80e's are fairly bullet proof as long as you take care of them, oils and temps, etc

Everybody talks smack about the 6.5. It's an idi that starts easy in the cold that with a few upgrades will last a regular person almost a lifetime. Stock they were mehh, but they're not hard to get to respectable.

They're not bad for sure, just my opinion and from my experience, if I was gonna buy an older pickup, stock these 6.5's are great and decent fuel mileage, hard to beat really, otherwise the alternative is a gas guzzler. But even after all my mods and money spent, it brought it up to almost a stock lb7. And they don't like the cold, they start ok but if a glow plug stops working you will notice it greatly lol. Common rail makes a huge difference. The lb7 would further get better fuel mileage and power plus Allison but spending likely double or triple to get one though

yeah ill try to make a vid soon here, sometime this week, been very busy, also i cant really get a vid of the outside sound from truck since got nobody to film that, but hey shes pretty loud from the inside now, and gauges before, like a boost gauge and pyrometer, easiest to install the pyrometer while turbo is off, but those 2 guages are a must when playing with power.... and to get any true power out of the truck, CHIP IT

well your gauges, boost gauge i just ran a cheap hose for like gas line or something from it, down through the firewall, theres a hole in my firewall under the drivers area there above your feet, and just drill and tapped the intake manifold in the middle, and gauge wiring, find a switched power source, when turn key, the gauges light up, theres a big brown wire that comes down from the steering column that i used, but make sure you have a multimeter to confirm before you cut something lol

If memory is right, it was a straight pipe 4 inch diamond eye. oem cross over pipe as I don't/didn't believe there's any point to change it, the restriction was the exhaust manifolds.

Alex64W if you can get a first Gen duramax I'd highly recommend to do that over the 6.5, but otherwise the 6.5 is OK, good on fuel in comparison to a gas truck of its year/s but it doesn't have that more "true" diesel torque, it's like an economy diesel. Honestly I'd hold off until you can grab a dmax, more reliable and better power. And a diesel for a beginner, well a beginner friendly engine is probably one you'd have little trouble with, so the 6.5 may be OK but better yet lol a dmax.

As for having never owned a diesel before, yes I would highly recommend it but one must keep in mind the 6.5 isn't a work horse and won't tolerate much abuse but I recommend it because it's the easiest engine to learn, cheapest to maintain and gain understanding to the diesel world before upgrading to a cummins or duramax where maintenance gets much more complex and part prices are crazy expensive (like $5-6k for a set of injectors or $1k + for a replacement turbo) let alone labor cost if you don't know how to fix a lot of it yourself.

@@rock-uu7qr it's a gutless pig plagued with problems unless someone is willing to shell out the money to bomb proof it. Nothing misinformative about what I said. Yeah, I have a 97' GMC CCLB dually that has gone through two blocks. Original was a 506 cast which was the worst one they made. Highly prone to cracking around the web mains due to poor metallurgy in the casting. It's almost just as unreliable as the 6.0 which is plagued with pretty much as the same issues. Not saying they won't tow anything but you won't tow near what a Duramax or Cummins will weight wise and they ain't no speed demon when pulling out from a dead stop. So please, before barking anymore bullshit, back up your claim with some factual data and prove me wrong or just hold yourself accountable and admit your wrong.

hey sorry... damn new youtube doesnt tell me when people comment anymore.... Temps are... good... normal lol, i got a bad cooling fan where it wont actually engage the clutch anymore... so the fan spins but wont go into its high speed or 1:1... i was towing my trailer and deck on truck with snowmobiles, so... 5-6k pounds im pulling... going up a nice grade for a ways... on tow mode i was pulling about 20-22 # boost maintaining about 105 km... 4:10 gearing temps hit 100C and stay'd, 0 issues

I believe it to be the Anti-surge of the turbo, No blow off valve or anything, It sure was funny... floor it and get to 20+ psi and let off quick and it let off a big long PEWWWWWWWWWWwwwww.

dana44s it was the hx40w-II turbo and I removed the silencer ring on the compressor wheel, the exhaust pipe was a 4 inch straight pipe at the time, it had no chip so it was slow, I have some other videos on my channel of various driving or flooring it up a hill, gives you a better idea on sound when she's pushing 20#+

dana44s not bad at all really if your mechanically inclined it's a turbo swap, paid a guy off of dieselplace for a turbo 90 degree adaptor to down pipe, sawed off intake a bit, and shortened turbo oil drain pipe, and used a dodge intake to the turbo with a cold air filter.

Ah, doesn't sound too bad. I'm sure there are right ups. I love how yours sounds. I love the turbo whistle and surge noise. The 6.5s with stock turbos, can't even hear them. How is your mileage and EGTs? I know alot of people say you gotta watch the EGTs and boost on a stock 6.5 otherwise you take the risk of burning the engine up or blowing gaskets. Do you still hear the turbo under normal acceleration? I'm probably getting a 98 K3500 with a 6.5 with 180k. I had a 93 K2500 before and loved it. (there's a short exhaust clip on my channels)

dana44s turbo was very noticeable overall, highly audible and I'd guess the same goes for anybody else when I drive by. The truck I did head gaskets and arp head studs, egts really weren't bad overall, even on a hot summer day sucking underhood air it took me to go wide open in the race tune and like 24# to get up to 1200f, fuel mileage wasn't bad at about 23mpg highway screaming along 2600 rpm,due to 4:10 gears,. I don't own the truck anymore, it's been about 2-3 years now so I don't fully remember, I remember on a winter day, approx - 15c towing approx 6000# I maintained 110 km/hr up some steady incline hills and had it sustain 24# or so for probably a minute straight and It hovered 1200f. Biggest thing was for it to down shift or turn higher rpm, it cooled it off, it it begun to lug and lower the rpm it started to get hot, that I do remember.

your saying that like a 4l80e is a weak trans. its fairly strong and can handle any engine they are bolted too factory. you should have said .letting off the throttle every time will make short work of any stock automatic transmission. and probably one out of a dodge or a ford of similar years much faster than a 4l80e

Removed the turbo silencer ring, it let's the air pass through the compressor wheel with out it surging, so you dont get compressor surging noises.

I can't remember exactly but i think around 92 ish they all had turbo's with the 6.5L engine. the 6.2 you'd be sure as heck that it was N/A unless they put a turbo on. and even the 6.5's stock turbo sucks lol.

I think it was, had a custom downpipe adaptor /90 to the stock exhaust except I then had a diamond eye 4" turbo, back so I'm not sure if it went 3inch to 4 or if it was 4 the whole way.

It was the turbo bark, probably the anti surge on the compressor for the turbo. So the air escaping past the compressor wheel I'd bet. Once I had the truck chipped it made a really loud one when letting off at about 15+ # of boost.

Haha it wasn't the down pipe, I had removed the turbo silencer ring which should of been the reason for that sound, exhaust was a normal exhaust from turbo back minus the custom down pipe adaptor for the turbo.

@@tobiasbergkvist7294 I had a diamond eye system with their downpipe, but the factory turbo has the 90 elbow to it, the hx 40 is a straight out the back, somebody on diesel place was making an elbow/adaptor to go from the hx to the stock downpipe location, all I had to do was pop it in and install 2 v band clamps.
