I think the reason is mostly cultural, but also the popularity of faster moving sports such as basketball and football. The presence of NIL money might help good black players enter college baseball where scholarship money has not been as available as it has been in college football and basketball. It should be noted that there are plenty of black players in Major League Baseball, but most of them come from Spanish speaking countries and their native language is Spanish.

The reason there are less African American baseball players today, is because in the inner cities baseball isn't "cool". The past generation grew up with fathers or mothers that loved the game, this younger generation isn't. It's sad, but I don't think it will change anytime soon. Most young black kids want to be a DB or WR in the NFL, or a Point Guard in the NBA. I hope this changes, but it has to come from the parents, to instill the love of baseball into their kids.
