Hard to be super optimistic about the Chapman signing, but if adding an incrementally better player via free agency means they have some extra trade chips then I guess it’s a good addition. They may be anchored down to the guy longer than we’d like, but the contract isn’t massive years of pain if he stinks.

Chapman was a great signing because it was a much needed 2nd man added to the heart of the order along with Soler. Competitive teams should have at least 3. But this at least brings us much closer to the ideal. But all is for not without Snell. We'd instantly go from 4th place to a team that can win the wild card and beyond. If we sign Snell we can then trade Ramos, Davis, Yaz, Bart, Luciano, and a starting pitching prospect in a package for a star outfielder and shortstop on the level of Tatis Jr w/o the injuries and Kim of SD with control This would be transformative giving us the last power bats we'd need for a true heart of the order. Then sign Trevor Bauer, who said he'd play for the major league minimum, after Snell for a real playoff team. About Luciano, he looks overwhelmed and even worse than I thought. He didn't do much last year, is constantly dealing with injuries despite his young age, and most are placing him at the bottom of the lineup when he was originally touted as a power bat heart of the order type. He's likely headed toward being just another Christian Arroyo, Jaylin Davis, Felipe Crespo, etc. failed positional rookie hype that's plagued the Giants for decades since I've been a fan. So get rid of him now while he still has trade value before he doesn't anymore.

I get this is a team-friendly deal with Chapman and a bargain for the team, but it could be concerning in that the Giants continue to get a reputation with players that they're the 'bargain' team.

I dont get the plan??? If Chapman is worth a damn, he's gone next year, we lost a pick, intl money and a year of developing Schmitt. If Chapman stays, then its a mess because no one wants him. And is he going to hit better than 2020-2023 in SF?? I'd guess more the same or less....

Having Chapman at 3B does give Schmitt a little more time to develop. He also will be a great mentor to Schmitt, even if it's just by role model. What Casey really needs is at bats. He can get that anywhere on the diamond. Casey has already proven he has potential gold glove caliber defense at 3B and possibly at 2B and even SS. He may start in AAA where he will continue to get much needed ABs, but I won't be surprised if they start him as a backup or utility infielder. Remember, Casey lost time in 2021 due to injury and he didn't get to play in 2020 after he was drafted. He's behind in his development as a result. Chapman won't play every game. Hopefully Casey will be the guy to play behind Chapman. I have a feeling Chapman will have a very good season. He has a very good history of staying healthy too. I hope that is the case for him this season. I'd love to see Schmitt take the 3B position, but he has to hit.
