Not just a stunning performance of a song - but real acting throughout. Come the finish, I'd lost the Will to live, as poor Dido had. the instrumentalists are excellent to, not sloppy & laconic as some 'early 'ones are. I Hope or wish Purcell could hear this. He'd be chuffed to bits' or 'most delightedly pleased' in his own idiom.

The best version? - Music is not a competition! No question about it, Joyce Didonato interprets the Lamento at the highest level, but besides this version there are others that are equivalent. Personal taste then decides. For my part, I appreciate the versions of Janet Baker and Emma Kirkby more because these two singers become heart-touching instruments for the feelings of text and music. With Joyce Didonato, it seems to me just the opposite: for her, the lament is a means of presenting herself and her feelings. Janet Baker - Dido & Aeneas - When I am laid in earth, kzbin.info/www/bejne/epCYYa2gbK9oZrc Emma Kirkby - Purcell: Dido's lament - York, 2007, kzbin.info/www/bejne/n4W5Z3lpobmIbdE In addition to a number of excellent "classical interpretations", it should also be mentioned that there are wonderful modern versions: Annie Lennox - Dido’s Lament - Choral Performance with London City Voices, kzbin.info/www/bejne/nGSnd5R_pNuNrsU Lamento Dido - Henry Purcell - Andreas Prittwitz - Lookingback, kzbin.info/www/bejne/maqslHWLh89jjaM

For this, Janet Baker has always been my favourite; but Joyce DiDonato is really wonderful! What Janet taught us about this aria, which is a very Purcell point, is restraint. Don't give too much too soon. Jessye Norman, rich and majestic though she is, falls at that fence, for me... but Joyce DiDonato... oh, Janet and Henry himself would be proud! I would like also to pay humble tribute to the wonderful musicianship of all concerned in this recording. Sublime!

Use caution when giving anything the title of "the best", especially within the arts. "My personal favorite" is a more appropriate title. This piece by Purcell has been done by many more historically noted and accomplished vocalists that Ms. Didonato. She did it wonderfully and well acted and cannot be faulted in any way.

English is a very pure sound from this period, and she is manipulating the vowels out of all. Proportion to create a large auditorium opera sound. The composer never intended this. ...why "the best version"? unless and until the soprano is not sang by a young female, it is far from original! All the conductors should educate themselves with the history of the composition first. While the soprano in this take is beautiful, it falls short to interpret the original just like the rest of 99% of other miss-interpretations. Do you know what changes when the soprano is sang by a girl? There is a lack of excessive vibrato and overall expressions is soft! The dynamic range is limited, therefore it changes the whole emotion of the piece.

So NOT the best version. Purcell did not write all those appoggiaturas and trills which only go to detract from the pure simplicity of what should otherwise be a very emotional resignation of Dido's fate and death. Janet Baker, then Lea Desandre
