It’s not only the magnificent voice, not the clarity of diction, nor the musical skills, nor the awesome presence; she had that inexpressible something extra in her interpretations and their depth of emotional truth that makes us shiver.

Jessye Norman was not an interpreter of Purcell's Dido. She was Dido. Astonishing and moving to tears.

Thy hand, Belinda, darkness shades me, On thy bosom let me rest, More I would, but Death invades me; Death is now a welcome guest. When I am laid, am laid in earth, May my wrongs create No trouble, no trouble in thy breast; Remember me, remember me, but ah! forget my fate. Remember me, but ah! forget my fate.

Her voice has always been a light to my darkness. I will spend my last moments listening to her sing.

And there it is, the voice and the pain of Queen Dido, emotion, beauty and ultimately sadness and death. Incredibly beautiful.

I first heard Ms Norman about 45 years ago. She sang Strauss’s ‘Four last songs’ at her graduate school in Ann Arbor. I’d never wept in a recital before.

I wish I would have known about Ms. Norman 20 years ago. I would have found a way to get to at least one of her live concerts in my lifetime. 💔 It makes me more grateful for her recordings. Thank you Ms. Norman. 🕊️ 💜

This is one of my favourite pieces of music. Normally, I will sit quietly and enjoy it, but this had me sobbing from almost the first note. I do not think that I have ever heard such anguish, and minutes after it ended, the tears are still flowing.

Written more than 300 years ago, yet across time it speaks to us still and touches us as deeply now as then. Music expresses the ineffable.

Funny and sad thing in the same time with yt. Almost every time I open in a video with opera singers and or with similar subjects the ads are not in them. They put them only in the videos with the most views? Because if that is true than such a few people have good taste.
