Thank you Mossman for this complete tutorial. I have close to zero mechanical skills but I am alright at “follow the leader” so I was able to complete this project successfully. Replacing other components while they are more accessible was time and money well spent.

' 99 Sonoma 4x4 etended cab with the exact same mileage as this one you did. Put it back together (blown intake gasket) with not one issue. runs great. I wonder what a shop would charge for this job? After Auto Zone points, $16 for Felpro gasket kit with a tube of sealer that came with it...a can of Brake Clean and a gallon of Dex Cool. Changed the oil but it was still fine. Leak went to the outside. Did this job for around 50 bucks. Thanks again for the little pointers ya don't expect until ya do the job.

I don't know what they would charge but it wouldn't be cheap. And would they care about the job they were doing like you do? Probably not.

That's what my neighbor said about me vs a shop. He know how thorough I am. It pays in the long run for a few minutes of PM. I clean every bolt thread and every part before reassembly. I shoot a little paint on brackets and what not before they go back on. Truck has always done me right and it's almost 20 years old in great shape from doing the little things like corrosion control. I watched your videos like it was my favorite movie. I think I blinked not one time. Very interesting, and straight to the point. I have a 98 GMC Safari van that I had to constantly refill with radiator fluid, and was smelling it when I turned on my heater. I knew exactly what the problem was, but don't have the time, nor the tools to do what you did. When you mentioned that someone must have used radiator stop leak, I laughed because that's exactly what I put in my radiator, but it worked. I'm not sure how long it will last though. Great video man, and like other responses, thanks for putting in the time and effort to make it wonderful.

Thanks for posting the video; I had to change the intake gasket on my 2000 S-10 and used your video as a guide. I didn't replace as much stuff on the engine as you did. I only replaced the intake gasket since that was all I was having problems with. First time I tore down an engine this far on my own and it was an immense help to have something to go by. Took the laptop out to the garage and replayed the video as I worked. Happened to notice when you were backing your S-10 out of the shed that you are a fellow Wisconsinite.

Couple thangs. One very awesome video series, well explained in step by step fashion. I have '02 S10 LS 4WD 4.3L V6 and vehicle will not currently pass Northern VA emission inspection due to Check Engine Light 171 & 173 error codes, System Too Lean. I was ready to replace all vacuum lines and discovered that GM Dex Cool eats up intake gaskets and causes orange lumpy rust globs to form in the coolant. SIDE NOTE: Literally took 2x 5-gallon buckets full (10 gallons) just to flush the heater core as it was not working at all in the colder months. Had about 1/4-1/2 a cup of the lumpy rust globs got flushed out as well. GM had a Class Action lawsuit over factory installed Dex Cool, they lost. So your comment below regarding "Well they still use it..." has a caveat or two. Jiffy Lube refuses to use Dex Cool. But like you, I will be replacing my S10 coolant with Dex Cool as well as a GM stock thermostat (196 deg F). From what I read, it's imperative to flush all air out of the system as it's one of the triggers for the orange goop syndrome. Anyway's, I now have coolant leaking from around the intake (and have been smelling it as you mentioned in this video series) and with the above vacuum leak, figure my intake gaskets are toast. Bottom line, I would have never been able to efficiently R&R the intake without this 5-Part video series. Thank you very much for the time and effort it took to produce and publish "98 S10 Vortec 4.3 V6 Intake Gasket Replacement". Thumbs up and subscribed. Only wish is that there was a Bill of Materials to go along but I'm not complaining!!!

Getting ready to work on this tomorrow. Water pours out driver side front port where it connects to head, I expect the top part of the gasket to be completely missing. This video helps familiarize me with most of the things I will encounter, although I will probably avoid taking any of the top plastic part of the manifold apart. You did good job showing bolt locations and some wrench sizes, plus sometimes it helps to show more detail in electric plug lock mechanisms as they are all different and sometimes they get broke before you find the right way you ‘ should ‘ have pried on them ( or should not have )

Thanks for answering my question about the valve cover gaskets. Was also wondering if you've ever back flushed the heater core on this? I have an 02 Blazer with only 65K on it, but have had to do that twice because it just wasn't cranking out the heat like it should. The 1st time I did it, when the heat was really weak, I heard a popping sound, like a vacuum releasing, as soon as I uncorked the heater hose on the firewall. I gently back flushed it and got a whole bunch of junk into the bucket I was flushing into, including some fairly big nuggets. The filter screen on it had to be really blocked a lot. Ran it until it was clear & the difference in the heat was incredible. The 2nd time I did it I got a fair amount of gunk in the bucket, just not as dramatic as the 1st, & the improvement with the heat wasn't as much either (but it hadn't gotten as weak either). I'll probably back-flush again when i do all of this project. Thank you, your 5 videos here are outstanding!

@snw569 жыл бұрын
+Michael Senter: These vacuum lines connect on the driver's side in front of the brake booster. They ultimately connect inside the truck, under the dash and control the vent blend doors. If you have problems with your HVAC vents and controls not working properly, check these vacuum lines first. They are known to deteriorate prematurely.

@mossman38111 жыл бұрын
We have had about 3" total of fluffy snow so far. I have to do some more plowing tomorrow so I don't know yet if the batteries are bad or not. Today the volt meter was way below 14v. So the alternator might be the problem. This is the first time the volt meter has read like that so I don't know if the batteries wrecked the alternator or what. Jump starting the truck every day is getting old.

Thanks for the video's they have been so helpful, my husband used all of them to change the intake gasket on our 96 Blazer. One question...its not wanting to start. He's sprayed starter fluid and nothing. He's gone over the timing several times and checked all sensors. Have spark on the plugs but it sounds like no fuel is getting to the plugs. Turns over but won't start so do you have any idea what he should check next? He also changed the computer or ECM. Could it be the fuel modulator on the spider? There is gas coming to it.... Thanks a lot
@mossman3819 жыл бұрын
Amy Bond If he sprayed starting fluid in and nothing happened then I don't think you have spark. It should have started and run on the starting fluid for a second. I don't recommend spraying starting fluid in the engine. Check the distributer cap and rotor. You may have spark but not at the right time. Very important the distributor went back in the way it came out. The fuel pressure regulator is in the intake. I changed mine out while I had everything off. On the 5.3 and 4.8 a bad fuel pressure regulator can cause hard starting. Make sure your fuel pump is working. Not being able to see it for myself all I can really do is guess.

I'm about to tackle same job. Found coolant in oil. Fricken stuff looks like brownie mix coming out of the pan. Hey bud, I see your gas gauge jumping around while keeping 500 RPM. Is your truck having an issue with it? My gauge doesn't work either... any vids of you working on that other than replacing pump and sending unit? I have done that already and still no go on the gauge. Also, I heard the gasket issue is related to the use of Dex-Cool.
@mossman3818 жыл бұрын
If you changed the fuel sending unit in the gas tank then your stepper motor is probably bad in the gauge. Or maybe a ground issue with the wiring. Dex-Cool doesn't cause gasket failures. They are still using it today on the new cars. GM got a bad batch or cheaped out on the gaskets. My gasket looked very cheap. Replace it with a good quality one and you won't have the issue again. You aren't suppose to mix the Dex and the green coolant. So unless you plan to flush the whole motor and cooling system you need to stick with the Dex-Cool or you are going to have more issues.
@jasonrobbins46644 жыл бұрын

Jeff Everett Also let me see if i have this straight for the distributor part, mark (on the firewall) where the rotor is pointing, and as well mark on the distributor itself where the rotor is pointing (mark one) and then while pulling distributor out as the rotor turns mark where it stops (mark two). Now when putting back in, i line the roter up with (mark two) on the distributer and then line the roter up with the mark on the firewall, and as it drops down it should turn the roter to line up with both marks, the one on the firewall as well as the (mark one) one on the distributor..is this correct ? Been a while since i did this!
@mossman38110 жыл бұрын
Jeff Everett I don't remember all the tools needed but you should have a good set of metric wrenches. You need a metric crows foot. I believe I tell what size in the video. I also think you need some star sockets. I think I point out any special tools needed in the videos.

mossman381 isn't that sensor in the top of the tank and you gotta take the take down to change it?
@mossman3818 жыл бұрын
TheDizizope Yes, tank has to come out or take off the bed. Not sure where the blazer fuel tank is. That video link shows exactly what it is.
@DS42O8 жыл бұрын
mossman381 i watched it thanks. the blazers tank is in the very back under the cargo area.

mossman381 I've got a question that I kinda need the answer as soon as posable, I've done everything you've done in your video except 1 problem I put everything back together and forgot to plug in 2 connector plugs one goes to the distributor and I was able to plug that in but I can't find out where the other connector plug goes to, it is a whiteish oval plug that has a light green base that keeps water from getting in, and like I've said I got the distributor connecter plug in now but I can't find out where the other connector plug plugs in at. but the distributor wire and this wire I can't find where it goes come out of the same area of the wire harness. I'm sure you know where this goes that is why I'm asking you first

I just put everything back together and the truck started ran for a little then cut off. Now it won't start. Any suggestions?
@mossman3812 жыл бұрын
I would look at all your electrical connections.

@@mossman381 I did I think the timing jumped off. Any suggestions for getting it times right?
@mossman3812 жыл бұрын
If you forgot to tighten the distributor hold down, you will need to go through the timing steps. Putting the engine on #1 compression stroke and aligning the distributor accordingly.

Good work. Now I have to do mine. I have 03 with no EGR so that's a little easier. Now you need to figure out why your fuel gauge is spazing out. :-)

after I finished it made high noise when I started it I tried to press on gas pedal there was no pressure at all what do you think
@mossman3817 жыл бұрын
You might have to cycle the key a few times to get the fuel pressure where it needs to be.
@kamalanton51637 жыл бұрын
thanks man this problem is solved but everytime I start it it makes a lot of random noise I don't know why
@mossman3817 жыл бұрын
I hope you didn't drop something in the motor. That would be really bad.

Bouncing fuel sender! There goes the fuel pump on the downward spiral. Maybe all the heat from ethanol fuel is burning up the gaskets?🤔
@mossman3816 жыл бұрын
I have heard people say that but I have has two gm trucks with bad fuel senders and the fuel pumps still work great.

I had to look carefully to see, but based on your voice, I would have sworn you were David Chappelle, from Motortrend Dirt Every Day. You guys sound remarkably alike.

looks like you have a problem with your fuel gauge sending unit,or wire connection,it goes from full to empty in less than 1 second.

Great job and a good idea to replace all of the items that are impossible to get to without removing everything again. Do you have any idea of the total cost of the parts? I can only imagine what it would have cost if you paid someone to do the work.
@mossman38110 жыл бұрын
bg147 It was a long time ago so I don't remember the total cost. It is an expensive job to pay someone to do it.

Someone stole all your fuel. Gauge shows on empty. Nice job!!
@mossman38111 жыл бұрын
The fuel sender is bad I think. I have a new one just waiting for a good time to take the box off and put it in.
@547Rick11 жыл бұрын
I figured as much because I saw it go from full to empty on the video.
@mossman38111 жыл бұрын
I can shake the truck and get what ever fuel level I want.

mossman381 Why would you ever want empty then ! hahahaha
@christopherfisher1234 жыл бұрын
I think you fuel gauge is bad.when you 1st cranked it it was full then after bleeding air it was empty.😮
@mossman3814 жыл бұрын
Most likely the sending unit in the tank. GM vehicles are known for that. I sold the truck before fixing that.
@felixantoine42746 жыл бұрын
Mine is knocking why
@mossman3816 жыл бұрын
Hard to tell you anything without seeing the truck myself. Did you get the distributor back in the same spot? Drop something in the motor? Oil in the motor?
@chriss6959 жыл бұрын
looks like your gas gauge broke
@mossman3819 жыл бұрын
chris s Yes, like most of the s10 trucks still running.

I don't believe that. They wouldn't still be using it if that was true.

A knock in a motor is usually a rod bearing. If you have a tick that can be many things. A bad injector will cause a ticking sound. Is it running good?
