I remember back in the 90's, trying to introduce Squarepusher to people in my town and they all thought I was crazy. "how do you listen to this noise" would be a common response. I always saw it as genius, captivating, art that couldn't be duplicated. I often wonder if both Squarepusher and Aphex Twin have mild or major cases of Autism? Whatever the case, it wasn't long after that both of them blew up and people started giving it a chance. My favorite of the two was always Squarepusher, as I thought he had a perfect blend of electronic and acoustic - along with his incredible bass playing. I couldn't get enough of his Jazz influenced sounds.

Same here, most of my friends from high school exclusively listened to hard rock, heavy metal and a bit of blend dance music. When I occasionally put on my kind of sound (Squarepusher, Autechre, BoC , Aphex Twin, Plaid , Wagon Christ and so forth) they simply labeled it as “music for loonies “ . Didn’t bother me as I always knew these talented people made crazy good music and I still listen to all this stuff as often as I can .. ;-}

Yeah, I remember something similar in the 90s, coming back to a city i'd lived in and buying Hard Normal Daddy and playing it to my former flatmates and some other friends. None of them got it. Whereas for me I was like wtf, this is the stuff, this is where it's going. Same with phex'ee. Tom says that he didn't get Kraftwork when he was younger, but I liked that straight away when I was little, alongside disco, Zappa, punk, hard rock, bebop, whatever that had a groove and riffs etc, even noise music just for the sounds. Long before I'd heard of drum and bass, I liked making fast beats with keyboards or drumming on things over soundscape music. Anyway, he got up to speed rather quickly and what a nice legacy he's created.

I like the Satie-Debussy comparison. They're both pals and Richard is obviously more popular, but I still believe that both will withstand the test of time as their contributions are too significant. The mythology of Aphex Twin has just been much more effective (it's funny that he used to say he doesn't care about identity, but boy he's the genius of that). What also helps is lots of popular artists mentioning Aphex Twin every once in a while in order to come across as edgy.
