For as big as Ghost is or is getting, Tobias doesn't sound like a "rockstar". He's very grounded and thoughtful. Confident but not egotistical. He seems to realize there will be an end (as there always is) and he's going to ride the wave while he can.

That's what the bands and musicians that are still here from the 60's-70's playing concerts or still making records thought.
@rottensquid Жыл бұрын
I think there's something important about keeping the persona you play onstage as separate from you. There's this great story about David Bowie, who tried to play a character onstage, but kept running into the problem of becoming his persona offstage, all through the 70s, getting lost in the grandiosity of Ziggy, or the Thin White Duke, etc. In 1980 when he was filming the video for Ashes to Ashes on a beach, some guy comes along walking his dog, ruining the shot. The director, Tony Visconte, rushes over to the guy and tried to shoo him away, pointing at Bowie, head to toe in this elaborate silver lame harlequin costume with a painted face and pointy hat. "Don't you know who this is?" And the guy looks at Bowie, and says, "Of course I do. He's a cunt in a clown suit." And Bowie roars with laughter. And from that point forward, any time he starts getting sucked into his stage persona, he remembers what these costumed characters really are. It's so much fun for us to get swept up in the glory of the stage performance, and look up to these entertainers as something more than human. Because that's what characters are. They step out of our imaginations and take us into a sort of sublime space where experience is heightened. But that's all just the show. It's not real. Beneath the costume, there's this regular dude that goes home and deals with bills, attends PTA meetings, gets prostate cancer, etc. I think a lot of rock stars get caught up in the persona, because it lets them believe they aren't that kid who struck out with Helga in primary school (or whoever Tobias struck out with.) But getting lost in the rock star persona tends to make people more miserable than happy, and has killed a lot of people. So I think it's probably better to keep that identity separate, to step into the shoes of the performer when onstage, and step out of them. Apparently, that's what Jim Osterberg does now, and it's kept him alive. I met a rock journalist who told me the story of meeting Jim, this down-to-earth, friendly, ego-less dude happy to answer questions. Then, about ten minutes before he was about to go onstage, he went off and sat down, and turned inward. Jim Osterberg sat down, and Iggy Pop stood up. The journalist said it was like watching Bruce Banner turn into the Hulk.
